Everton news: Ancelotti close to sealing Fikayo Tomori loan deal from Chelsea

Needless to say, Everton have been on fire lately. Carlo Ancelotti is adamant on building a strong and competitive team for the upcoming 2020/21 Premier League campaign and so far, he’s done a great job.

Not only have the Toffees secured a couple of huge signings that could give them a boost next season but they are not ready to stop just yet either.

According to the newest reports from ESPN, the Toffees are close to landing Chelsea’s Fikayo Tomori on a season-long loan deal. Of course, this is not the first time we hear about Ancelotti’s interest in the 22-year-old talent but it seems he is quite serious in the attempt to lure him to Goodison Park.

But Everton are not nearly the only ones looking into that option. The same source confirms the likes of Rennes and Newcastle United are also in the queue for his signature but the Blues are now in pole position to get the deal over the line.

Nothing is set in stone just yet, however, but it seems that Ancelotti is in a comfortable situation as of right now. Following the incredible signings of Allan, James Rodriguez and Abdoulaye Doucoure, Chelsea’s youngster would indeed round off a fantastic run in the market.

Still, we will have to wait and see whether Tomori truly ends up arriving at Goodison Park and if so, what exactly can he bring to the table.

Either way, exciting times lie ahead for the Toffees.

Verdict

Even though he enjoyed a great spell under Frank Lampard on loan at Derby County and to a certain extent at Chelsea as well, Tomori did not play a single minute since the restart, his last game being the 2-2 draw vs Bournemouth on February 29.

So maybe another loan could indeed be what both parties would want for the youngster and surely a boost for Everton in their chase.

Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs enquire about Ligue 1 star – and it’s not Gabriel Magalhaes

Tottenham Hotspur face stiff competition from Newcastle to sign Lille star Jonathan Ikone this summer.

According to Telefoot, as relayed by Get French Football News via Ricky Sacks, Spurs have made a formal enquiry about his services, amid interest from Newcastle.

The Lilywhites have also been linked to his teammate Gabriel Magalhaes, who has attracted attention from a number of European clubs.

Ikone has been in sensational form for the Mastiffs this season, scoring three goals and supplying six assists in Ligue 1.

The versatile player can play on either flank, operate as a playmaker in the middle or line up as an centre-forward. His versatility makes him a valuable asset as he made 40 appearances in all competitions during 2019/20.

Despite his young age, the 22-year-old has already experienced playing in the Champions League, which could stand to him in the future if a transfer is made.

Jose Mourinho has his work cut out as he tries to bolster his Tottenham squad in the summer with a limited budget. He basically has to start from scratch, as he has inherited a side from his predecessor Mauricio Pochettino bereft of quality in key areas at the back (44 league goals conceded) and up front (held scoreless by 18th-placed Bournemouth yesterday).

While Ikone is clearly a talented player, he has several alarming weaknesses that he needs to work on before he makes the jump to the Premier League, including passing, crossing and the ability to hold on to the ball.

Moreover, his contract with Les Dogues is set to expire in 2023, meaning he won’t come cheap if he leaves the Stade Pierre-Mauroy this summer. He is currently valued at £32m via Transfermarkt, which is well outside of Mourinho’s price range, as Daniel Levy has made it clear he will not be spending “rivers of money” in the summer.

As it stands, it is likely that Spurs will give this one a miss when the transfer window opens, as they arguably have bigger issues to address at the back.

Tottenham fans, should Daniel Levy sign Jonathan Ikone in the summer? Let us know in the comments below!

Tottenham Hotspur: Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg set to become Jose Mourinho’s first summer recruit

Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a fee with Southampton for Saints midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg after weeks of negotiation, reports say.

At first Spurs fell short of Southampton’s £25m asking price for the 33-cap Denmark international, who has made it clear he will not sign a new deal at St Mary’s.

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, as relayed by Ricky Sacks, both clubs have agreed a transfer fee that is significantly less than what Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side were initially looking for, with the figure amounting to £15m, although this could potentially rise to £19m.

It has previously been reported that the player was Mourinho’s top transfer target this summer.

The Danish midfielder will undergo a medical at the beginning of next week, meaning Hojbjerg should become Mourinho’s first summer recruit in the coming days, signing a five-year deal.

Everton also reportedly had a bid accepted, but the 25-year-old has set his sights on a move to north London.

The Toffees were offering £25m, but the ex-Bayern Munich ace made it clear he wanted to play for the Portuguese instead.

Hojbjerg, who turned 25 earlier this week, has scored five goals in over a hundred appearances for the Saints in all competitions after arriving from Schalke in 2016 and started the 2019-20 campaign as club captain.

However, the Dane was stripped of the captaincy after he told Ralph Hasenhuttl he had no intention of extending his contract, and has seemed destined to leave the South Coast ever since.

Southampton are confident their newfound relationship with the Lilywhites can pave the way for Kyle Walker-Peters to head in the opposite direction.

Spurs could be ready for a reshuffle upon his arrival, as Harry Winks could be in line for a shock exit as his future at his boyhood club is in doubt.

Hojbjerg is a top-class player who is a strong threat in the air, a hard-working midfielder with great concentration on-and-off the ball, and someone who doesn’t shy away from a tackle or two, which is exactly the type of player Mourinho needs to challenge for trophies next season.

Tottenham fans, do you think Hojbjerg will be a great signing if the deal is completed? Let us know your views in the comments below!

Arsenal: Gunners keeping tabs on Wout Weghorst

Arsenal have a big summer transfer window ahead as it is Mikel Arteta’s first chance to have a rebuild of the squad in what will be his first pre-season as manager, and reports suggest that he is looking for a striker.

German media outlet Bild have reported that there is English interest over Dutch striker Wout Weghorst, with Newcastle United the main party interested as well as the Gunners.

The striker, who plays for Bundesliga side Wolfsburg, has stated that he is interested in playing in the Premier League, and Arsenal are perhaps looking to him as a possible successor to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, with Wolfsburg valuing the forward at around £32m (as per Bild).

This season, the 27 year-old has thoroughly impressed in the Bundesliga and Europa League, as he has scored 20 goals whilst registering five assists, per WhoScored. He also averages 2.7 shots per game (the same as Aubameyang) and 1.1 key passes per game (more than Aubameyang).

Even if Aubameyang does not leave Arsenal this summer, Weghorst could be an ideal striker for the Gunners as he clearly knows where the net is, whilst also having a creative eye. Also, at a height of 6ft4, he would offer the north London side an aerial threat in attack and could hold up the play to utilise the complementary traits of others around him.

The fee for the player might be the only thing that stands in the way, although the Dutchman looks like a complete forward who is at the perfect age to come straight into the Arsenal first team and help them to improve their league position in 2020/21 if he moves to the Emirates Stadium.

Gunners fans, do you think Weghorst would be a good signing? Comment below with your views!

Crystal Palace fans think Mamadou Sakho is one of their best ever centre-backs

[ad_pod ]

Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter to discuss where Mamadou Sakho ranks amongst their best ever centre-backs, with many suggesting that the Frenchman stands alone at the very top of the pile.

The former Paris Saint-Germain captain arrived in south London in a £26m deal from Liverpool back in 2017, following a stunning six-month loan spell prior to the permanent deal in which he was nominated for the club’s Player of the Season award.

Since then, he has formed a formidable partnership alongside James Tomkins at the back, which has been the foundation of what is currently the fifth best defence in the Premier League, behind only Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham and Chelsea.

Sakho can, however, be a controversial figure amongst Palace fans, as he often tends to do outlandish things such as back-heel the ball inside his own box and play risky passes – real heart in mouth stuff.

Be sure to check out the incredible story of the man who rose from a Tanzanian refugee camp to become one of Australia’s biggest football stars in the video below…

His commanding performances at the back, in which he combines solid, body-on-the-line defending with composure and the ability to play the ball out of defence, have clearly impressed the Palace fans, and they think he ranks as one of their very best according to their reactions on Twitter…

'I'm not completely surprised' – Ex-Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has not been caught off-guard by the club's current form, says he 'expected more' from Blues last campaign

Former Chelsea manager Frank Lampard says he is not surprised by the team's struggles under Mauricio Pochettino this season.

Blues off to difficult startHave won once in PL this seasonLampard says no quick fix for issuesWHAT HAPPENED?

The London side hoped to recover from a disappointing 2022-23 campaign, in which they sacked two managers – Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter – before bringing club legend Lampard back for the remainder of the season.

However, the Blues have endured a rough start to the season, having won just once in the Premier League this season since Pochettino was appointed coach in the summer.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Lampard says the team should have performed better than the 12th-placed finish in the league that they accomplished last season, but maintains that there is no quick fix for their issues, suggesting Pochettino needs time to get his team in shape.

WHAT THEY SAID

"I'm not completely surprised with some of their difficulties, having lived it first hand at the end of the season. I came into a club where it had been eight months of results you don't expect from Chelsea, and that's working with two, in my opinion, very good managers, top managers, in Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter.

"I felt I could see some of the issues there, which were issues probably with confidence from results. When you're with Chelsea if you don't win that builds, that nervousness. And maybe some motivation amongst the squad which I think was probably through having such a big squad, unprecedented numbers. A lot of players felt their time was up at Chelsea or it was coming or maybe Chelsea were going to move them on and I lived that feeling."

"So I think you have to affect it by hiring a very good manager in Mauricio Pochettino and then recruitment. So, there's big, big changeover, but there is no magic wand as such in football and the Premier League is the most unforgiving. I expected more in terms of points but I never felt it would be an instant turnaround."

Premier League clubs have voted on a potential rule change that would have banned clubs signing players from related teams in the January transfer window. The move came amid speculation that Saudi-owned Newcastle United want to sign Ruben Neves from Pro League Al-Hilal side as a replacement for Sandro Tonali. Manager Eddie Howe has already admitted he likes the midfielder and revealed his club would be against any motion to block such transfers. The PIF own Al-Hilal and three other top clubs in Saudi Arabia in the form of Al-Nassr, Al-Ahli and Al-Ittihad.

A total of eight Premier League clubs, including Newcastle, voted against the ban. Abu Dhabi-owned Manchester City and Saudi-owned Sheffield United opposed the motion along with Chelsea, Everton, Wolves, Nottingham Forest and Burnley, as reported by Martyn Ziegler for . The decision means that Premier League sides can sign players from partner clubs on loan this winter, despite concerns that such deals provide certain teams with an unfair advantage.

DID YOU KNOW?

Al-Hilal are currently top of the table in the Saudi Pro League, four points clear of Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr and top of their AFC Champions League group. The club would surely be reluctant to part ways with club-record signing Neves, particularly after losing star man Neymar to a long-term knee injury.

GettyWHAT NEXT FOR NEWCASTLE?

The news is likely to be a boost to Howe and Newcastle who can start to firm up plans for the January transfer window. The loss of summer signing Tonali to a 10-month ban for betting offences has been a blow and a replacement may well be sought when the window reopens.

Ansu Fati shows he can deliver if Ousmane Dembele leaves: Six things we learned as Barcelona's homegrown winger grabs the winner against AC Milan

The young winger rounded into form at the end of last season, and has shown signs that he could revive his Barca career as gaps emerge in the squad

Ansu Fati scored a classy goal and looked dangerous in 45 promising minutes, leading Barcelona to a 1-0 win over AC Milan to close out their pre-season tour of the United States. The winger's bending strike broke open an otherwise simmering contest, and suggested that the player, once assumed to be dead weight at Camp Nou, could have a role to play for this team yet.

The two sides exchanged chances in the early goings, with Jules Kounde cracking a shot off the post and Fikayo Tomori putting a free header over the bar. Rafael Leao came closest for Milan in the final minutes of the first half, evading three defenders before seeing his close-range shot denied by Inaki Pena.

Fati's introduction at half-time changed things. He broke the deadlock shortly after the break, cutting onto his right foot and releasing a lovely curled effort into the top corner, a shot Mike Maignan could only watch as it landed in the net. The winger could have made it two, too, but saw a point-blank effort turned away by a last-ditch slide tackle after a dangerous run from Alejandro Balde.

Although Barca manager Xavi would undoubtedly like to have seen his side put Milan away — they put a few more chances wide in the closing minutes — this was yet another promising runout for a team looking to defend its La Liga crown. And, if Fati continues to glimmer, they could have Ousmane Dembele's replacement ready to go without having to spend a penny.

GOAL looks at what we learned during the clash at Allegiant Stadium…

Ansu shines as Dembele watches on

Despite the controversy surrounding a potential summer exit, Fati enjoyed a rather successful run towards the end of last season. He finished the campaign with seven league goals, and chipped in with three assists while serving as a regular as an injury-limited Barcelona stumbled through their last few games.

He hasn't quite picked up on that form this pre-season, often starved of opportunities as Xavi continues to rotate his options. But he was given a whole half to work with here, and showed why he should be kept around. His goal was the kind of Messi-esque strike that had made Barca fans fall in love with him in the first place, a drop of the shoulder and inch-perfect finish past a frozen goalkeeper.

It was noticeable that he headed over to the bench to hug Dembele, who was watching on having been left out of the squad as he closes in on a transfer to Paris Saint-Germain. Fati may play on the opposite wing to Dembele on most occasions, but the 20-year-old is versatile and could yet step into the France international's shoes.

Fati could have made it two, but was denied by a last-ditch tackle. Still, his impact was made. This could quite easily be another false dawn in a year marked by them. But there was enough zip, quality and swagger about his showing to suggest that there might be something more long-term at play.

AdvertisementRaphinha stakes his claim to take Dembele's role too

Despite Fati's performance, Raphinha will probably think that Dembele's soon-to-be-vacant spot on the right-hand side is his to lose. The Brazilian certainly did enough to suggest he can fill in towards the end of last season, developing a solid understanding with Robert Lewandowski as Barca pushed towards the title.

And he did all the right things here, too. He played high and wide, cut in onto his dangerous left foot, and linked up effectively with a much-changed Barca side. It was, ironically a rather Dembele-esque performance.

There were some poorer moments, as Raphinha sometimes rushed things or misplaced a pass. He isn't always the most efficient player — something that has drawn the ire of his team-mates in the past. Still, if Raphinha is the fall-back option, it's hard for Barcelona to complain.

Alejandro Balde sprints… a lot

Alejandro Balde is very quick. That much is known by now. And he spent much of his 45 minutes on the pitch trying to prove it. The left-back repeatedly scampered up the left side of the pitch, torching multiple Milan defenders at a time. They were the kind of surges that Barcelona fans have seen him make for a while now.

But when he got into the final third, things were mixed. He certainly has a good understanding with Fati — it was him who fed his international team-mate for Barca's goal — but his final delivery is still a bit erratic. Balde tends to ping the ball into space, rather than seek out a target. He puts his crosses into the right areas, without considering who might actually be there to meet them.

Xavi likely won't care. This is a 19-year-old more than capable of holding down a spot for the Spanish champions; a player who effectively kicked club legend Jordi Alba out of the side by last January. That he was quite comfortably one of the most dangerous players on the pitch here is even more encouraging. And once that final ball develops — if he figures it out — Balde could be a real attacking weapon

Pulisic continues to impress

Christian Pulisic needed to get out of Chelsea. Opportunities had dried up for the United States forward, who never really seemed to settle at Stamford Bridge. And his new start in Milan has already shown some promise. He was influential in the Italian giants' pre-season clash with Real Madrid two weeks ago, and enjoyed some good moments against another Spanish side here.

His pace and trickery caused problems on the right, and he served as a constant outlet on the counter. But there were also some good defensive moments to be found. He dropped back to help veteran right-back Alessandro Florenzi against a swarming Barca attack, and put in a few crucial tackles inside his own 18-yard box to ensure parity at the break.

Pulisic's attacking impact wavered in the second half as Milan were pushed back into their own half, but this was a showing of promise from a player who deserves a chance to see his career reborn.

Lauren James, Linda Caicedo and GOAL's Team of the Women's World Cup group stages

As well as the England and USWNT stars, Japan are well-represented in the best XI of the tournament's opening fortnight…

What an incredible group stage we've just been treated to at the 2023 Women's World Cup. There were huge shocks, with two-time winners Germany, Olympic gold medallists Canada and South American champions Brazil all crashing out, while the underdog stories kept coming as Jamaica, Morocco and South Africa made the last 16 for the first time in their respective histories.

We've seen surprise results, too, such as Japan thrashing Spain, and the big guns are starting to warm up, as seen in huge wins for Sweden and England.

At the heart of it all have been some seriously impressive individual performances, with the race for the Golden Ball award certainly heating up with each matchday that has passed. As we prepare for all the drama that is sure to come in the knockouts, GOAL picks its team of the Women's World Cup group stage…

GettyGK: Chiamaka Nnadozie (Nigeria)

When you look at Nigeria's squad, you're immediately drawn to the attack. Asisat Oshoala, Ifeoma Onumonu, Uchenna Kanu and Rasheedat Ajibade are among the players Randy Waldrum can call upon in the final third, but one of the stars of their group stage was at the other end, in goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie.

Four years on from becoming the youngest goalkeeper to keep a Women's World Cup clean sheet, the 22-year-old has experience that belies her years and that certainly helped her as she kept two big clean sheets against Olympic champions Canada and a determined Ireland.

Racking up a save percentage of 83.3 in her first three games, Nnadozie's stand-out moment was the stop she made to deny Christine Sinclair, the greatest goalscorer in the history of international football, from the spot. It gave Nigeria a great foundation to build on in Group B.

AdvertisementGettyRB: Tiernny Wiltshire (Jamaica)

Again, Jamaica's star names come in the forward areas, with Manchester City star Bunny Shaw certainly the poster girl for this team, but their defence was the key as they caused one of the shocks of the tournament by knocking out Brazil.

The Reggae Girlz are yet to concede at this World Cup, with a 1-0 win over Panama sandwiched in between goalless stalemates with France and the South American champions, and Tiernny Wiltshire was absolutely solid in the latter two results.

Tasked with keeping some real top talents quiet in her right-back role, Wiltshire won 10 duels, made 10 clearances, won five tackles and both of the aerial battles she competed in across the two games. There haven't been too many outstanding, eye-catching right-backs over the first phase, but there haven't been any more reliable and dependable ones than the 25-year-old.

GettyCB: Amanda Ilestedt (Sweden)

How often can you say that a centre-back is in the race for the Golden Boot? Amanda Ilestedt certainly is after netting three times from defence in Sweden's first three games.

The first of those was absolutely crucial, her header from Kosovare Asllani's 90th-minute corner saving Sweden's blushes and allowing them to start with a win over South Africa. A few days later, she came to their rescue in a different way, breaking the deadlock from another set-piece just before half-time, the Olympic silver medallists having found Italy tough to break down before that goal.

Ilestedt, who signed for Arsenal this summer, has been important at the other end of the pitch, too, helping Sweden to record two clean sheets as they enter the knockout rounds as just one of three teams to take maximum points in the group stage.

GettyCB: Naomi Girma (United States)

There's no doubt that the U.S. women's national team were poor in the group stage, with their tally of five points the lowest they've ever recorded at a Women's World Cup. That said, Naomi Girma has been excellent for the reigning champions in the heart of defence.

Only conceding once in the first three games, the U.S. were relatively solid at the back despite their struggles, Girma's composure and ability to take control of situations particularly important given the team lost captain and star centre-back Becky Sauerbrunn just before the tournament.

So often what the 23-year-old does can be under-stated and therefore go unnoticed, but it certainly shouldn't. She's already one of the best in the world in her position.

Pele's greatest career moments: 1,000th goal, 1970 World Cup and stopping a civil war

Brazil and Santos legend Pele died on Thursday. GOAL remembers the greatest moments of his incredible career.

No player did more to popularise football's reputation as the beautiful game than the immortal Pele.

The only male or female player to win three World Cups, the free-scoring forward also spearheaded one of the greatest club side's footballing history.

His death leaves a devastating void in global sport, and below, GOAL recalls some of the standout moments of a once-in-a-lifetime career.

Getty ImagesA goal on his debut… twice

Pele made his professional debut all the way back in 1956. Aged just 15, the legendary forward lined up for Santos – he had only signed a few months earlier following a successful trial – against Corinthians Santo Andre.

Pele scored in the 7-1 victory, kickstarting a golden era at the club that would span 18 years. It wasn't his best strike, with the teenager simply tapping home a rebound in the box.

Then, in July 1957, Pele opened his international scoring account – against Argentina no less. He was far from an established name in the Santos side at this stage, but impressed Brazil manager Sylvio Pirillo in a friendly organised to raise money for Sao Paulo's new stadium.

A baby-faced Pele still managed to find the net at the Maracana, making it 2-1 to the Selecao.

Getty ImagesBirth of a superstar

Pele introduced himself to a global football audience at the 1958 World Cup in Sweden. After featuring just once in the group stage, his tournament exploded in the quarter-final stage, when he burst through the Wales backline to secure a 1-0 win and his side's progression.

Things got even better in the semi-finals when Pele's hat trick helped Brazil down the free-scoring Just Fontaine and France.

And his legend was secured in the final when he grabbed a brace as the Selecao smashed hosts Sweden 5-2. His first goal in that game was typical of his brilliance. After taking down a deep cross in the box he dinked the ball over brutish Swedish defender Bengt Gustavsson, before watching it drop down from a great height and finding the bottom corner on the volley.

Getty ImagesContinental champion

While Pele's relentless touring schedule prevented him from winning the Copa America with Brazil – he only appeared in one tournament (1959) and managed to secure the Golden Boot – the forward did taste continental glory at club level.

In 1962, with the scores level after two legs in the Copa Libertadores final against Penarol, Pele carried Santos to victory in a Playoff contested on neutral ground at Estadio Monumental. He grabbed a brace, including a game-changing strike just after half time, as Santos earned their first ever South American title.

A year later, the Alvinegro retained their crown, with Pele scoring in the final against Boca Juniors.

Victory in these two games booked Santos a place in the Intercontinental Cup against European opposition. They made light work of their opponents both years, first beating Benfica – Pele scored five goals over the two legs – and then getting the better of AC Milan in another playoff.

Five in a row

Throughout the 1960s Pele spearheaded Santos' greatest ever side, appropriately nicknamed Os Santasticos.

The Dream Team's list of accomplishments is endless, and their diminutive attacking fulcrum was always at the centre of things.

Winning five Serie A titles in a row between 1961 and 1965 was one of Santos' crowning achievements, with Pele securing the top scorer award in three of these seasons.

1962 also saw Lula's charges secure the 'first treble in the world'. During this whirlwind year, Pele and Co. won the Copa Libertadores, Campeonato Paulista and Taca Brasil. Not bad.
