Jefferson retira colete cervical

England need to defy history

Rarely can two teams so closely positioned in the ICC rankings have entered a series with one side so overwhelmingly fancied to win

Rarely can two teams so closely positioned in the ICC rankings have entered a series with one side so overwhelmingly fancied to win. Pakistan, fifth in the ICC ODI rankings, are expected to thrash England, sixth in the ODI rankings, in the four-match series that begins in Abu Dhabi on Monday. Some are already predicting a whitewash. It is not hard to understand why. While Pakistan have won their last six ODI series, their last seven ODIs and 13 of their last 14, England have lost their last five. Indeed, England have won only five of their last 20 ODIs played outside the UK and, since December 12, 2005, England have won just 12 of 38 ODIs in Asia. Four of those victories came against Bangladesh and the Netherlands. Indeed, since 1987 – yes, 1987 – and excluding games against Bangladesh, England have won just one two-nation limited-overs series in Asia. Several of England’s squad – Steven Finn among them – were not even born at the time.Furthermore, Pakistan whitewashed England 3-0 in the recently concluded Test series. England’s batting was woefully fragile against spin and it is anticipated that Pakistan will play a maximum of two seamers. It is possible they may even play five spinners. From an England perspective, such statistics do not justify much optimism.Scratch beneath the surface of those statistics, however, and the picture is not so clear. Not quite so clear, anyway. England have actually won nine of their last 12 ODI series, including the last one against Pakistan. In the 2011 English season, they defeated both World Cup finalists – India and Sri Lanka – and, until the 5-0 thrashing they took in India, they seemed to be on a gentle upward curve.Perhaps they may not prove quite the pushover some are predicting. In many ways, Alastair Cook offers a microcosm of England’s reputation. Cook, England’s 50-over captain since their almost ritual humiliation at the 2011 World Cup, has received a great deal of criticism in recent times. A plethora of former players – the likes of Ian Botham, Mike Atherton and Dermot Reeve – have questioned not just his captaincy ability, but his right to a place in the side as a batsman. For evidence they cite Cook’s ODI career-strike rate of 78.98, which is low for an opening batsman in this era, and his sometimes ponderous Test batting.Again, the more recent statistics tell a slightly different story. In the home series against India and Sri Lanka, Cook scored 467 runs at a strike-rate of 95.89 and an average of 58.37. By any standards, those are impressive statistics. Even in India, where he averaged just 26.60, his strike-rate was 84.71. It means that, since he was appointed captain, his batting average is 46.15 and his strike-rate is 93.16.Cook, like England, have had one bad series. The encounter with Pakistan may allow clearer conclusions to be drawn. One man who will not be helping England, in the first match at least, is Jos Buttler, the 21-year-old Somerset batsman. He had been pencilled in for a place in England’s middle order but will not be available for selection as his hand injury has not healed sufficiently. The injury will be monitored over the next day or two before a decision is made whether Buttler should be sent home.Pakistan’s team is unlikely to differ too much from that which defeated Afghanistan on Friday night. It is possible Wahab Riaz could be dropped for another spinner, probably Abdur Rehman, or that Shoaib Malik will make way. Either way, it is likely that spin will be introduced very early – possibly from the start. Mohammad Hafeez, Shahid Afridi and Saeed Ajmal will form a formidable trio at the very least. One of Pakistan’s strengths is the presence of three decent allrounders in their side. Afridi’s batting may not be the force it once was, but he is still a dangerous player capable of turning a game with bat or ball within a few overs. Hafeez, too, provides bowling depth, while Umar Akmal, by no means the finished article as a wicketkeeper, is a very fine batsman to find himself as low as No. 7 in the order.Perhaps there is just one, small concern for Pakistan. While their current squad looks ideally suited to conditions in the UAE, it may prove less well balanced in Australasia, where the 2015 World Cup will be contested. Misbah-ul-Haq, Pakistan’s captain, said it was “too early to think about the 2015 World Cup” and that it was better for the team “to concentrate day by day. We have to bring in some youngsters for long-term planning, but we are doing it day by day.”Misbah said the use of two new balls – one from each end – should minimise the affect of dew, but did warn against over confidence from his players. “Sometimes confidence is harmful for the team,” he said. “We have to guard that.” Over confidence, at least, should not be a problem for England.England’s policy is somewhat puzzling. They talk of fresh faces and building for the 2015 but their side in this game will be strikingly similar to the ones that have played over the last year or so. It is just in a slightly different order. Indeed, had Eoin Morgan and Stuart Broad not missed the series in India due to injury, England’s side would be identical. If England do lose, they may also have cause to reflect on their preparation for this series. The standard of net bowling has been well below the required standard while, for reasons that remain unclear, their warm-up game against England Lions was a day time encounter despite the fact that the series will be contested under lights. As a consequence, England are unsure how dew could affect conditions. While Cook said that England had “tried” to stage the warm-up game under lights, he complained that England “don’t have control over the wicket and groundsman and stuff.” The ground authorities and PCB insisted both sides had “agreed on the schedule mutually… well in advance.” A spokesman commented: “If there had been a wish from ECB for a day-night fixture it would have been addressed.”Cook, at least, took encouragement from necessity. “The one-day game dictates you have to be more positive,” Cook said. “We’re not going to have men around the bat all the time so it changes your mentality as a batter. It frees you up and we’ve got a good record against Pakistan.”To listen to some pundits, you would think that England’s best hope in this series is to avoid humiliation. Cricket would not be nearly such an absorbing game, however, if it was predictable.

Mamadou Sakho was Crystal Palace’s unsung hero in Huddersfield victory

Crystal Palace supporters have been in fine voice in recent times after seeing their team get back to winning ways in the Premier League over the weekend.

Roy Hodgson’s men went into their trip to Huddersfield Town off the back of three successive league defeats, with Liverpool, Watford, and Southampton getting the better of the Eagles in the last few weeks. Yet the London club picked up a vital three points at the John Smith’s Stadium to stop the rot, with influential ace Wilfried Zaha getting the all-important goal seven minutes before half time to secure a narrow 1-0 success for Hodgson’s side.

As such, there have been many thrilled Palace fans up and down the country in recent times, several of whom have been heaping praise on Ivory Coast international Zaha, who again proved his worth to the Eagles with another match-winning display in Yorkshire at the weekend.

And while the 25-year-old was a constant menace to the Terriers backline on Saturday, and thus certainly played his part in Palace’s success, it was the efforts of defender Mamadou Sakho, who earns £100,000 a week as per Spotrac, which appear to have gone slightly unnoticed.

The former Liverpool defender has been an ever-present in Hodgson’s side this term but was reunited with fellow centre back James Tomkins for the trip to Huddersfield, what with the latter missing the 2-0 loss to Southampton prior to the international break.

And the duo produced a commanding performance in the heart of the backline to help the Eagles to a clean sheet and thus all three points, with Sakho winning seven of the ten aerial duels he competed for at the John Smith’s Stadium, as well as making a team-high eight clearances over the course of the 90 minutes.

Add in a completed tackle, an interception, a block, and no fouls, and the 28-year-old read the game superbly to enable Palace to remain resolute at the back and thus not give Huddersfield a sniff of an opportunity, yet he also did the business on the ball as well.

The Frenchman, capped 28 times by his country at senior level, had more touches of the ball than any other Palace player (67), while his 85% pass success rate was better than the other three members of Hodgson’s backline – he gave them great composure when on the ball, while also delivered off it as well.

Special mentions must also go to fellow defender Tomkins, whose reintroduction into a backline that then kept a clean sheet cannot go unnoticed, as well as right back Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who again produced a professional and mature performance down the right-hand-side for Hodgson’s team.

So while talisman Zaha will again hit the headlines for providing the moment of brilliance to seal all three points for Palace on Saturday, defender Sakho was their unsung hero in victory over Huddersfield.

Compton frees up with future decided

Nick Compton may not have much idea what the future holds for him as far as England is concerned but he has finally pledged his domestic future to Somerset for the next three years

There can be few more obvious ways of demonstrating your loyalty to a county than by signing a new contract when they are threatened by relegation and then scoring important runs which may help avert that indignity.Nick Compton may not have much idea what the future holds for him as far as England is concerned but he has finally pledged his domestic future to Somerset for the next three years. And on a blissful late summer evening in Edgbaston, the opener put his bat where his pen was by making an unbeaten 83 as Somerset fought back on the third day of their Division One game against Warwickshire.By the close of play Compton’s innings, which had included ten crisp, confident boundaries, had helped Somerset establish a 66-run lead going into the final day of this match. A draw is now favourite and those three points may be vital in helping Marcus Trescothick’s team avoid relegation; but wherever the game is heading, it has at last become clear that Compton is moving nowhere.Opting to stay at Taunton may not have been a straightforward decision for the opener. He had been courted by richer and rather more fashionable counties, Warwickshire included. However, he has finally decided to stay at the county where he has produced his best cricket and his play on Thursday evening was both carefree and conscientious, as if he could finally apply himself to the business of scoring runs.Yet batting was not easy on the third evening. Jeetan Patel carried a continual threat and had a confident lbw shout against Compton turned down when the opener had made 63. By then the offspinner had dismissed Trescothick for the second time in the match when the Somerset captain edged him to Rikki Clarke. Nor could the Taunton hierarchy have been too ecstatic to see Chris Jones run himself out for 16 when attempting a third run to Clarke’s arm in the penultimate over of the day.But Compton remained steadfast and secure, and while he does so it is hard to see how Warwickshire will achieve the win they need to further their ambitions. A game may be “set up” of course, but it is surely unlikely that Somerset will risk three hard-won points unless the terms offered were judged to be very favourable to them.By contrast to Compton’s careful approach, Warwickshire’s batting on the third day was rather profligate. Having lost their first three wickets for 38 runs on the second morning, they proceeded to lose their last seven for exactly 100 runs, leaving Laurie Evans and Ateeq Javid’s 269-run stand as a monument amid much rubble.Evans was the first to depart on Thursday, trapped on the crease by Peter Trego when he had added only eight to his overnight 130. Tim Ambrose was then beaten by an Alfonso Thomas delivery which nipped back off the seam and the dangerous Clarke was run out three balls later when Thomas got a touch to a drive from Javid. That left Warwickshire on 327 for 6 but the 39-year-old Darren Maddy then batted with the good judgement of twenty summers, and if his colleagues had been able to support him, the home side may well have gained the 100-run or more advantage they craved instead of the 67-run lead for which they had to settle.Indeed, Varun Chopra’s team lost their last four wickets in 14 overs after lunch, the first of them when Javid pushed tentatively at George Dockrell and was caught behind for a career-best 133. Things got worse for them when both Keith Barker and last man Patel were stumped by Craig Kieswetter off Dockrell, dismissals which sandwiched No. 10 Tom Milnes holing out at mid-on, also off the spinner. All three wickets were, to some degree at least, given away by the home side in a manner unbefitting champions. Dockrell, who had maintained a tight line for virtually the whole of his 43.4-over spell, collected 6 for 96 – nice figures if you can get ’em. Maddy, who had scarcely made an error, was left stranded on 40 and could have been excused for wondering if it was, after all, time to hang up his boots and take to coaching.

Siddle strikes to cement Australia's control

So far, the Old Trafford Test is being played is if in a time capsule. Australia are ascendant, batting boldly and bowling with discipline and menace

The Report by Daniel Brettig02-Aug-2013
Live scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsMichael Clarke extended his innings to 187 to ensure Australia’s control remained•Getty Images

So far, the Old Trafford Test is being played is if in a time capsule. Australia are ascendant, batting boldly and bowling with discipline and menace. England are constrained, left to toil in the field for hours before taking up a grim occupation of the crease with a draw quickly looming as their favoured outcome. The results of the first two Tests of this Ashes series dictate that a stalemate is all the hosts require to keep the urn, but by stumps on day two they found themselves 52 for 2 in reply to 527 for 7 declared – the sort of hole once faced with regularity by preceding generations. For a team who had lost six consecutive Test matches leading into this one, Australia have made a remarkably good fist of driving the game. The captain Michael Clarke soared to 187 before Brad Haddin and Mitchell Starc stretched England’s resources with an impudent stand that stretched 15 minutes past tea.Once Clarke closed the innings, Nathan Lyon produced an energetic first spin spell of the series before Peter Siddle took advantage of England’s defensive mindset by winkling out Joe Root and the nightwatchman Tim Bresnan, who appeared to defer to the batting class system in declining to review a caught behind decision by Marais Erasmus that appeared mistaken. Specialist batsman or not, it is one wicket less for Australia to claim over the remaining three days.England’s predicament was largely down to Clarke, who compiled both his most substantial innings against England and his highest Test tally overseas. Steve Smith provided sturdy support until he threw his hand away on 89. Clarke’s exit had granted Stuart Broad a long-delayed 200th wicket in Tests, but Haddin and Starc followed up with near impunity on another sun-drenched afternoon.Root and his captain Alastair Cook walked out with stodgy intentions that became quickly apparent. Starc swung the new ball but it was the introduction of Lyon that caused the most trouble, also leaving many to wonder how he had been omitted for Ashton Agar earlier in the series. In his first over Cook snicked a sharp off break that rebounded off Haddin’s pad, but a wrong-footed Clarke was unable to propel himself forward to take it. Lyon finished the day wicketless, but his loop and spin had created considerable doubt in English minds.Siddle’s entry to the attack was delayed while Ryan Harris and Shane Watson were tried, but he quickly made an impact, moving one away from wide on the crease to confound Root and then coaxing a false stroke – if perhaps not an edge – from Bresnan. In the day’s final over Jonathan Trott edged fractionally short of the slips, leaving plenty of positive thoughts in Australian minds.Early morning showers had given way to blue skies by the time the teams walked to the middle, Clarke and Smith seeming to set themselves for a long stay as they negotiated the second new ball. Milestones came and went, the highest fourth wicket stand in an Old Trafford Test then the 200 partnership, leaving Cook looking somewhat bereft of ideas. He resorted to Graeme Swann’s offspin soon after mid-morning drinks, and the temptation of the slower, spinning ball proved too much for Smith, who aimed a heave towards midwicket but managed only to send a skier into the hands of Jonny Bairstow. This was profligate by Smith, who had shown so much patience to this point, but England will argue that it was in fact the fourth time in the innings they had dismissed him.David Warner thus walked to the wicket with Australia in decent fettle, accompanied by the inevitable boos following his earlier attack on Root in Birmingham during the Champions Trophy. Clarke was by this time in flowing form, treating Tim Bresnan in particular with rare disdain as he crested 150. But Warner’s was a brief and skittish stay, one firm push to the cover boundary undone when he snicked Swann’s offbreak to slip via Matt Prior’s pad.Unable to tell he had hit the ball having simultaneously thudded bat against pad, Warner sought advice from Clarke, who surprisingly assented to the review. Replays revealed the thickness of the edge, sending Warner off to even louder departing boos than those to have greeted him. On the Old Trafford balcony, the rest of Australia’s players and coaches were less than enchanted with events.Haddin watched all this then marched to the middle, quickly reasserting his side’s strong position with a trio of lofted boundaries that conveyed both the true nature of the pitch and Australian desire to mount their tally in a timely fashion. Like Clarke to Swann at short cover earlier in the session, Haddin did offer one exceptionally difficult chance with an inside edge through to Prior, but the catch went down as England pondered how many they might be chasing.Ultimately Clarke fell into a pattern of running singles down to third man, and in attempting to do this to a Broad delivery that cut back he succeeded only in nudging the ball onto the stumps. Siddle had a lusty swing at Swann and missed, but Starc had rather more success as Haddin accumulated ably.Nine boundaries were coshed from the bat of Starc, and his stand with Haddin was worth a rapidfire 77 by the time the bails were tipped off for tea. It had become 97 by the time Clarke gestured his men in, leaving England with a vexing task ahead to ensure the retention of the Ashes.
