England need to defy history

Rarely can two teams so closely positioned in the ICC rankings have entered a series with one side so overwhelmingly fancied to win

Rarely can two teams so closely positioned in the ICC rankings have entered a series with one side so overwhelmingly fancied to win. Pakistan, fifth in the ICC ODI rankings, are expected to thrash England, sixth in the ODI rankings, in the four-match series that begins in Abu Dhabi on Monday. Some are already predicting a whitewash. It is not hard to understand why. While Pakistan have won their last six ODI series, their last seven ODIs and 13 of their last 14, England have lost their last five. Indeed, England have won only five of their last 20 ODIs played outside the UK and, since December 12, 2005, England have won just 12 of 38 ODIs in Asia. Four of those victories came against Bangladesh and the Netherlands. Indeed, since 1987 – yes, 1987 – and excluding games against Bangladesh, England have won just one two-nation limited-overs series in Asia. Several of England’s squad – Steven Finn among them – were not even born at the time.Furthermore, Pakistan whitewashed England 3-0 in the recently concluded Test series. England’s batting was woefully fragile against spin and it is anticipated that Pakistan will play a maximum of two seamers. It is possible they may even play five spinners. From an England perspective, such statistics do not justify much optimism.Scratch beneath the surface of those statistics, however, and the picture is not so clear. Not quite so clear, anyway. England have actually won nine of their last 12 ODI series, including the last one against Pakistan. In the 2011 English season, they defeated both World Cup finalists – India and Sri Lanka – and, until the 5-0 thrashing they took in India, they seemed to be on a gentle upward curve.Perhaps they may not prove quite the pushover some are predicting. In many ways, Alastair Cook offers a microcosm of England’s reputation. Cook, England’s 50-over captain since their almost ritual humiliation at the 2011 World Cup, has received a great deal of criticism in recent times. A plethora of former players – the likes of Ian Botham, Mike Atherton and Dermot Reeve – have questioned not just his captaincy ability, but his right to a place in the side as a batsman. For evidence they cite Cook’s ODI career-strike rate of 78.98, which is low for an opening batsman in this era, and his sometimes ponderous Test batting.Again, the more recent statistics tell a slightly different story. In the home series against India and Sri Lanka, Cook scored 467 runs at a strike-rate of 95.89 and an average of 58.37. By any standards, those are impressive statistics. Even in India, where he averaged just 26.60, his strike-rate was 84.71. It means that, since he was appointed captain, his batting average is 46.15 and his strike-rate is 93.16.Cook, like England, have had one bad series. The encounter with Pakistan may allow clearer conclusions to be drawn. One man who will not be helping England, in the first match at least, is Jos Buttler, the 21-year-old Somerset batsman. He had been pencilled in for a place in England’s middle order but will not be available for selection as his hand injury has not healed sufficiently. The injury will be monitored over the next day or two before a decision is made whether Buttler should be sent home.Pakistan’s team is unlikely to differ too much from that which defeated Afghanistan on Friday night. It is possible Wahab Riaz could be dropped for another spinner, probably Abdur Rehman, or that Shoaib Malik will make way. Either way, it is likely that spin will be introduced very early – possibly from the start. Mohammad Hafeez, Shahid Afridi and Saeed Ajmal will form a formidable trio at the very least. One of Pakistan’s strengths is the presence of three decent allrounders in their side. Afridi’s batting may not be the force it once was, but he is still a dangerous player capable of turning a game with bat or ball within a few overs. Hafeez, too, provides bowling depth, while Umar Akmal, by no means the finished article as a wicketkeeper, is a very fine batsman to find himself as low as No. 7 in the order.Perhaps there is just one, small concern for Pakistan. While their current squad looks ideally suited to conditions in the UAE, it may prove less well balanced in Australasia, where the 2015 World Cup will be contested. Misbah-ul-Haq, Pakistan’s captain, said it was “too early to think about the 2015 World Cup” and that it was better for the team “to concentrate day by day. We have to bring in some youngsters for long-term planning, but we are doing it day by day.”Misbah said the use of two new balls – one from each end – should minimise the affect of dew, but did warn against over confidence from his players. “Sometimes confidence is harmful for the team,” he said. “We have to guard that.” Over confidence, at least, should not be a problem for England.England’s policy is somewhat puzzling. They talk of fresh faces and building for the 2015 but their side in this game will be strikingly similar to the ones that have played over the last year or so. It is just in a slightly different order. Indeed, had Eoin Morgan and Stuart Broad not missed the series in India due to injury, England’s side would be identical. If England do lose, they may also have cause to reflect on their preparation for this series. The standard of net bowling has been well below the required standard while, for reasons that remain unclear, their warm-up game against England Lions was a day time encounter despite the fact that the series will be contested under lights. As a consequence, England are unsure how dew could affect conditions. While Cook said that England had “tried” to stage the warm-up game under lights, he complained that England “don’t have control over the wicket and groundsman and stuff.” The ground authorities and PCB insisted both sides had “agreed on the schedule mutually… well in advance.” A spokesman commented: “If there had been a wish from ECB for a day-night fixture it would have been addressed.”Cook, at least, took encouragement from necessity. “The one-day game dictates you have to be more positive,” Cook said. “We’re not going to have men around the bat all the time so it changes your mentality as a batter. It frees you up and we’ve got a good record against Pakistan.”To listen to some pundits, you would think that England’s best hope in this series is to avoid humiliation. Cricket would not be nearly such an absorbing game, however, if it was predictable.

Security situation in Pakistan has improved – Majid Khan

The international community should take decisive steps to ensure cricket returns to Pakistan as soon as the safety of visiting teams can be guaranteed, former PCB chairman Majid Khan has said

The international community should take decisive steps to ensure cricket returns to Pakistan as soon as the safety of visiting teams can be guaranteed, former PCB chairman Majid Khan has said. Majid, who is on the executive committee of the MCC, presented a security update on the situation in Pakistan at the body’s latest meeting in Cape Town over the weekend.Majid reported on an improved Pakistan situation, where security threats are minimal, and the MCC received his review with “optimism.” They are considering sending a delegation to Pakistan to conduct further assessment and Majid is hopeful that this will be the start of Pakistan hosting cricket again.”Whether the observers will come before [the next MCC meeting in] August I am not sure. The committee will also decide what sort of players they will send, whether it is a University team or just volunteers who are willing to go as an MCC team,” Majid told ESPNcricinfo at Newlands. “Regardless of what standard it is, they will still go to play and it will break the ice.”No Test team has toured Pakistan since the ghastly terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore in 2009. Afghanistan are the only national team to have played there in the interim. The Pakistan team now plays its ‘home’ matches in the United Arab Emirates, where they have hosted series against South Africa and Sri Lanka, and are currently preparing to play England.Bangladesh are the only team to have responded to a request to tour Pakistan. The PCB have invited them to visit in April, subject to a security check and various security guarantees which included bullet- and bomb-proof buses. Actions such as these are what Majid wants other countries and the ICC to engage in to take cricket back to Pakistan.”It’s up to the international community to make up their minds and assess the situation themselves, which they haven’t done,” he said. “They have to decide when they want to play in Pakistan. The ICC task force hasn’t visited Pakistan personally. I think it is time for the world community to physically come and start the process. If Bangladesh comes it will ease the fears of the international community but it all depends on the ICC and how quickly they would like to see Pakistan hosting home series.”Majid’s report may tempt the ICC, to whom the MCC presents recommendations, to evaluate the situation themselves. “Terrorist activity has abated a lot,” he said. His foremost example is of the British Army team who travelled to Pakistan army in December.”Just before their arrival, the NATO strike occurred,” Majid said, making a reference to the November 26 strike along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, which killed 24 Pakistani soldiers. “In deference to the soldiers, they postponed the games but the British Army team arrived in Pakistan. They practiced in the capital, Islamabad, without any security. They went up to a hill resort called Murree, spent a day there and they are thinking of returning in February to play the games. That’s a positive sign.”While the average Pakistan cricket supporter is keen to see cricketing action resuming in the country, Majid thinks there may be some sceptics. The spot-fixing trial and convictions have cast a long shadow over cricket in Pakistan and Majid says many fans have begun to doubt the honesty of the game.”There is a lot of cynicism among the public. If any match or series, Pakistan do badly, people start questioning. I’m sure if Pakistan had been bowled out for 47 against South Africa here [at Newlands], there would have been lots of questions.”That cynicism has to be done away with. We have to tackle the corruption problem and bring back the confidence of the public.” Majid believes the only way to do that will be to ensure that harsh punishments are meted out to those who are found guilty of cheating. He said stronger sentences, such as the jail terms that Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammed Amir are currently serving, play a dual role of acting as a deterrent to would-be offenders, and as a reassurance to the public that the problem is being taken seriously. “Overall, it has sent the message, ‘watch out,’ which is good,” Majid said.

Back to the drawing board – Flower

Andy Flower, the England team director, has said England will have to go “back to the drawing board” to figure out how to play one-day cricket in the subcontinent after they slumped to a 0-5 series defeat in India

England could not dismiss MS Dhoni through the series•AFP

Andy Flower, the England team director, has said England will have to go “back to the drawing board” to figure out how to play one-day cricket in the subcontinent after they slumped to a 0-5 series defeat in India. Flower said he thought England were better prepared for this series than they were when they were beaten by the same scoreline in 2008 but had been proved wrong by the results.”This is a bad setback for us and we have to go back to the drawing board in terms of playing one-day international cricket in the sub-continent,” he said. “We need time to reflect. I thought we’d learnt lessons from three years ago and put in place training drills which would equip our batsmen to deal better with the conditions out here, but I’m obviously wrong in that regard.”England ended the series in dismal fashion, losing their whole side for 47 in a dramatic collapse, after they were 129 for 0 chasing 272 at Eden Gardens. Alastair Cook, the England captain, said good starts and poor finishes had been a common theme of England’s performances through the series.”We set up the game beautifully to go on and win, but they bowled well and we played a couple of poor shots. It was a bit of a disappointing end and a bit of a common theme,” Cook said after the match in Kolkata. “We were in with a shout at 120-odd for nought and just got blown away at the end. It was very disappointing. We know you can lose wickets in clusters and we seem to have lost 10 there in a cluster.”While India’s spinners sparked England’s collapse, the victory had been set up by a fierce late onslaught from India’s captain MS Dhoni, who finished on 75 not out off 69 balls. Dhoni scored 212 runs in the series without being dismissed. He said he always focused on staying unbeaten till the end of an innings because then you could sum up which bowlers to go after.”I always want to stay to the end and whatever is in my area I look to hit it over the boundary,” he said. “It’s important to see which bowlers are left and who you can target. After that it’s about who can bear the pressure well.””It was an ugly looking wicket and any ball could swing or keep low,” Dhoni said of the Eden Gardens pitch. “It was very difficult to score on so we were fortunate to score 270 when 240 or 245 was in our minds. Then we just had to wait for the wicket to spin.”Cook praised Dhoni’s innings but said he thought India’s total was gettable. “Credit to MS; at the end he hits it very well, he’s a very hard person to bowl at and he single-handedly got them up to 270, which was probably gettable the way we started. But when you lose 10 for 50 you’re not going to win anything,” he said. Both Cook and Flower, though, insisted there were positives to take out of the series despite the emphatic scoreline. “Only four of us have played one-day series out here and it’s great for the youngsters to get the experience,” Cook said. “It will show where they need to improve and we all need to improve as a side. We got thoroughly beaten out here but there are quite a few positives; I thought Steven Finn [who took eight wickets over the five games] throughout the series has been excellent.”Flower said the bowling department had shown promise but unfortunately the batsmen had not been able to handle playing spin and had left the bowlers with too much to do. “Our skills weren’t good enough and our handling of the pressure wasn’t good enough,” he said. “We obviously haven’t got the players into a good enough state to deal with the challenges of playing spin, judging length and moving feet.”I think our bowling side has shown glimpses of skill and if there’d been reasonable totals on the board they would have been better at defending them. But unfortunately the bowlers have had to bowl to very attacking fields all the time because that was the only way to win because of our under-par totals.”

Umar Akmal must 'stop being selfish'

Mohsin Khan, Pakistan’s chief selector and interim coach, has said that Umar Akmal needs to “stop being selfish” and learn how to convert starts into substantial innings in Test cricket

Mohsin Khan, Pakistan’s chief selector and interim coach, has said that Umar Akmal needs to “stop being selfish” and learn how to convert starts into substantial innings in Test cricket. Akmal, a middle-order batsman, was dropped for the Test series against Sri Lanka in the UAE and advised to improve his game by playing domestic cricket.”There is no doubt over his [Akmal’s] potential or talent. But he has not done enough to remain in the team,” Mohsin said. “Basically we have given him a message. ‘Go and play domestic cricket and learn to play big innings. Learn to turn your thirties and forties into hundreds for the team. Stop being selfish.'”Akmal began the 2011-12 domestic season by scoring 95, 20 and 165 for Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited in their first two Quaid-e-Azam trophy matches. On the international circuit, however, he had not scored a Test century since his hugely impressive debut in 2009.After poor performances in 2010, when he averaged 24.33, Akmal was left out of the XI for the two Tests in New Zealand. He returned to the side for the Tests in the West Indies, but was dropped from the Test squad against Sri Lanka after scoring only one half-century in 2011, and struggling to play long innings in ODIs as well.”To tell you the truth, I was chief selector when we dropped Umar for the Test series [against Sri Lanka], but even if I had been the coach I would have still dropped him,” Mohsin said. “He would not have found a place in my team.””It is not my team or the PCB’s team. It is Pakistan’s team and those who are selected must justify themselves no matter how good they are.”Mohsin was appointed Pakistan’s interim coach to temporarily fill the vacancy created by Waqar Younis’ resignation after the tour of Zimbabwe. The PCB is in the process of finding a new coach for the national team. Mohsin has also served as chief selector since March 2010.”My aim has always been, like the Australians, to have equally capable players competing for one position in the national team and I think the selectors have succeeded in doing that,” he said. “I always wanted to coach the Pakistan team and for me it is a big challenge to also succeed as coach.”

ATRASO NO RELÓGIO

RANIEL CRIA MELHOR CHANCE CELESTE

CHAPE SELA A VITÓRIA
