Man City: Romano drops Haaland update

Manchester City have been one of the deadliest teams in the Premier League in terms of scoring goals over the past few years.

Since Pep Guardiola’s first season in charge of the club back in the 2016/17 season, City have scored at least 80 goals in every league campaign, breaching the 100-goal mark on two occasions.

Now that the next summer transfer window is around the corner, it seems as though the reigning league champions have their eye on adding one of Europe’s most prolific goalscorers to their ranks.

What’s the news?

According to journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano during his latest Here We Go podcast, talks between the Manchester club and Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland over a potential summer transfer move are progressing.

He said: “In the coming days we’ll have some final answer on Erling’s side. We know that Manchester City are progressing with talks but on Real Madrid’s side, they feel Man City are the frontrunner. They are in the process to sign him but it’s not a done deal. They are working on the details, the conditions and the payment.”

City fans will be delighted

Since joining the German club back in the 2020 January transfer window from RB Salzburg, the 21-year-old has been scoring goals for fun.

With 87 appearances under his belt, the striker has scored 85 times and delivered 23 assists for his teammates.

One of those assists came against Guardiola’s team in last season’s Champions League quarter-final first-leg clash.

Last season saw the centre-forward rack up 90 shots at goal in the Bundesliga, with 47 being on target, leaving only Robert Lewandowski (56) and Andre Silva (53) with more.

To further highlight what a hot commodity the Norway international is, only Kylian Mbappe (£144m) has a higher market value than Haaland (£135m) in world football according to Transfermarkt.

Having been reported earlier this month that the Manchester club have agreed terms on a potential deal for the striker, it certainly feels now like the Citizens are in the driving seat to eventually bring Haaland to the Etihad Stadium this summer.

Taking all of this into account, this will only be music to the ears of many City fans who will undeniably be over the moon with the prospect of seeing the Dortmund star firing in goals for their side.

Moving forward, if City can wrap this deal up as quickly as possible, this will surely put them in a good shape ahead of next season and keep their impressive record for scoring goals going.

Buoyant Swann awaits Ashes challenge

With four days to go until the start of the 2010-11 Ashes Graeme Swann has admitted he is climbing the walls in anticipation of the biggest match of his life

With four days to go until the start of the 2010-11 Ashes Graeme Swann has admitted he is climbing the walls in anticipation of the biggest match of his life, but believes that he and his team-mates will be able to channel all of their nervous energy into the daunting task of bearding the Aussies in their very own lair at the Gabba on Thursday.”When we first got over here I daren’t think of the first Test match, because I was like a kid on December 1, with an Advent calendar. I couldn’t wait for the 25th to come along,” said Swann. “It’s really building now, less than a week to go, and I go back to my room at night and I smile like a lunatic and bounce off the walls. It’s going to be amazing come Thursday – I just can’t wait.”Swann’s chirpy demeanour has been a key feature of his cricket ever since he burst back onto the international scene in 2007, and while his left-field humour and subtle disdain for convention has rubbed people up the wrong way in the past – not least the former England coach Duncan Fletcher – the current regime recognises his unquenchable optimism as an asset to be cherished every bit as much as his match-winning spin bowling. To that end, while Australia’s preparations centre around a spinner of their own – the left-arm debutant, Xavier Doherty, who is set to become their ninth specialist slow bowler since the retirement of Shane Warne four years ago – England’s main man is so comfortable with his form and role in the side that he has been passing the time by promoting a new dance craze that has been spreading through the dressing-room.Known as “the Sprinkler”, the dance involves moving an outstretched arm in the juddering motion of a garden sprinkler, with the other one tucked behind the head. It was first raised as a possible wicket celebration during England’s second warm-up game against South Australia at Adelaide, but it was given its first public airing during Swann’s weekly podcast on ECB TV, with several of the squad – most notably Tim Bresnan – strutting their stuff for the camera.”If someone’s stupid enough to give me a camera and let me have free rein with it, I’m going to do stuff like that,” said Swann, although there is a serious subtext to such frivolity, as he himself noted. “There’s a very good vibe in the camp,” he added. “For me, it did show what a good spirit there was – because it wasn’t hard to get anyone to do it. I know three or four years ago I might have tried that and got a couple of punches or got my head ripped off.”Even the Aussie media are finding it hard to frown on such antics. “Buoyant Poms start victory dance a little too early,” was how the Sun-Herald responded, and while it doubted that England would dare to unveil the dance on the field until the Ashes had been won and lost, it added: “It is refreshing to see a side having fun before such a pressurised series.”England’s current demeanour is a marked contrast both with the anxieties in the Australia camp at present, and perhaps more pertinently, those that dogged England’s own campaign four years ago, when they entered the Brisbane Test with doubts in every department, and were duly put to the sword from the moment that Steve Harmison bowled his infamous first-ball wide to second slip. The team bus, noted England’s then-spinner Ashley Giles, was as quiet as a morgue on that occasion. It’s hard to imagine a similar scenario this time around.Australia’s record in Brisbane is nevertheless formidable, with 16 victories in their last 21 matches dating back to 1988-89, and not a single defeat – a run of results that neatly encapsulates their two-decade march to the summit of world cricket. With that golden era now fading from view, however, England genuinely believe that they are the side who can capture the citadel and confirm the end of an era.”I think the team see Brisbane as a really big challenge and whenever we’ve come across these challenges, like not having won at Lord’s for 70-odd years, the guys really like facing things like that,” said Paul Collingwood. “Brisbane is one of them. It is difficult for teams to win there, Australia have been incredibly strong there, but that just makes it more exciting for us and we’d love to make history.”So far, England have hardly put a foot wrong in their preparation, recording handsome wins in two of their three warm-ups while securing invaluable batting practice at Adelaide. The decision to send Swann and his frontline bowling colleagues for early acclimatisation in Brisbane – where they practised with the academy squad and bonded as a quartet under the tutelage of their Aussie bowling coach David Saker – will be best judged in hindsight, but in their absence, England’s back-up bowlers still administered a ten-wicket defeat over Australia A.”We’ve played some excellent cricket over the last three or four weeks,” said Swann.”The acclimatisation couldn’t have gone better really. I think it just showed the strength and the depth of our squad that we could give Australia A such a good beating the other day.”On Sunday afternoon, however, the squad was reunited at the team hotel in central Brisbane, and from here on in, every man’s focus will shift to Thursday morning, as the crowds begin to gather around the Gabba and Ashes fever takes hold of the city. “It’s inevitable,” said Swann. “The intensity is going to be hyped up – the cameras in your face, the people in the street. Any player would be lying if he said you can’t feel it.”

Celtic: Ange must now launch Buchanan bid

As we enter the final furlongs of the 2021/22 campaign, you would be hard-pressed to find a Celtic supporter who does not think that Ange Postecoglou has done a sterling job following his appointment at Parkhead last summer.

Indeed, the Hoops currently lead their Old Firm rivals at the top of the Premiership table by six points, gave a good account of themselves in the Europa League group stage and have already lifted the Scottish League Cup.

Furthermore, the 56-year-old Bhoys boss has also demonstrated his dab hand in the transfer market, spending nominal fees on the likes of Kyogo Furuhashi, Carl Starfelt, Liel Abada, Josip Juranovic, Matt O’Riley, Giorgos Giakoumakis and Reo Hatate – many of whom have already earned cult hero status at Celtic Park.

And, with it being recently reported that the Greek-Australian manager is looking to sign a new left-back this summer, Postecoglou could well land the Hoops another bargain by reigniting his interest in Derby County starlet, Lee Buchanan.

Indeed, with the 21-year-old’s contract at Pride Park set to expire this summer, and Wayne Rooney’s side being unable to activate a one-year extension clause as a result of the club remaining in administration, the England U21 international looks set to become available on a free transfer at the end of the season.

As a result, interest in the £2.25m-rated defender is certain to be high, with the likes of West Ham United and Nottingham Forest – both of whom were also reported to be keen on the youngster’s signing in January – more than likely to make an approach for Buchanan if presented with the opportunity.

However, Postecoglou’s tendency to afford Celtic’s most promising young players a regular spot in his starting XI will certainly be an attractive proposition for the Derby full-back, something that could well give the Hoops an advantage in the race for the 21-year-old’s signature.

Indeed, with 20-year-old Abada being the 56-year-old manager’s most used player so far in 2021/22, and the Israel international’s extremely impressive returns having already seen him linked with a move to the Premier League, Buchanan will be encouraged that Celtic could well prove a pathway to one of Europe’s big five leagues at some point in the future.

And, with the defender having been dubbed an “incredible” talent and tipped to have a “real bright future” in the game by former England captain Rooney, it is clear that the £5k-per-week sensation is indeed an incredibly exciting prospect.

As such, all things considered, it would appear an extremely wise move for Postecoglou to launch an offensive for the England youth international this summer, as a move from Pride Park to Parkhead would very much seem a transfer that would suit all parties down to the ground.

Spurs: Paratici in talks for Dumfries deal

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in a deal to bring Denzel Dumfries to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Italian publication Tuttosport (via Sport Witness), who claim that Fabio Paratici has already made contact with Giuseppe Marotta to inform the Inter Milan chief of Tottenham’s interest in signing the 26-year-old, who is reported to be available for around €40m (£33m) this summer.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-martinez-dybala-spence-conte-2” title= “Read the latest Spurs news!”]

However, the report goes on to state that Bayern Munich have also contacted Inter concerning a deal for the Netherlands international, something which would suggest Spurs will have a fight on their hands if they are to land the wing-back this summer.

Conte can axe Emerson with Dumfries

Considering how impressive Dumfries has been for Inter following his €14m (£11.5m) move from PSV Eindhoven last summer, coupled with how underwhelming Emerson Royal has been for Spurs since his £25m switch from Barcelona in the same window, it is easy to see why Antonio Conte would be keen on a deal for the 26-year-old.

Indeed, over his 28 Serie A appearances this season, the £33m-rated wing-back has been in fantastic form for Simone Inzaghi’s side, scoring four goals, registering five assists and creating five big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of one shot and making 0.8 key passes per game.

The £51k-per-week defender has also impressed in metrics more typical of his role, helping the Nerazzurri keep seven clean sheets, in addition to making an average of 0.2 interceptions, 0.9 tackles, 0.6 clearances and winning 3.8 duels – at a success rate of 53% – per fixture.

These returns have seen the player who Siavoush Fallahi dubbed a “difference maker” average a very respectable SofaScore match rating of 6.85.

As such, with Emerson having already been linked with a move away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer, it would indeed appear a wise move for Conte to axe the £42k-per-week player who Stephen Pollard dubbed “truly hilarious” this summer, and used the funds raised from his sale to finance a swoop for the much more promising Dumfries.

Newcastle transfer news on Schlotterbeck

Transfer insider Graeme Bailey has now revealed some news involving reported Newcastle United target Nico Schlotterbeck.

The Lowdown: January target

It was reported that the St. James’ Park faithful were eyeing up a move for Schlotterbeck in the January transfer window, but a move from Freiburg never materialised in the end.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-5/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Instead, they signed Dan Burn from Brighton and Hove Albion, but could be in the market for another central defender in the summer, as per 90min.

The Latest: Dortmund bound

Sharing his article on Twitter, Bailey has revealed that the North East club will now ‘miss out’ on signing Schlotterbeck this summer, as he is set to sign for Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga:

“Newcastle miss out on signing of Nico Schlotterbeck,” the journalist said.

“Outstanding young German international did have interest in moving to Tyneside, but Borussia Dortmund were a bigger lure at this point.”

The Verdict: Shame

It is a shame that the Magpies have seemingly missed out on one of their targets in Schlotterbeck.

The 22-year-old is clearly a top prospect, having broken into the Germany national team last month, and his performances in the Bundesliga have merited a move to a big club like Dortmund.

He currently ranks as Freiburg’s best performer in the Bundesliga so far this season, and is high among his teammates in terms of average aerial duels, tackles, interceptions, clearances and blocks won per match (WhoScored).

Schlotterbeck would have been a shrewd signing for Eddie Howe and his team, but it looks like they will have to advance further in the long-term project if they are to beat big clubs to their respective targets.
