Fechado! Werley confirma contratação do zagueiro Werley

Hampshire not interested in Pietersen for Finals Day

Hampshire have confirmed that Kevin Pietersen won’t be selected for the Friends Provident t20 semi-final against Essex on Saturday despite being made available for county duty by the England coach Andy Flower

Kevin Pietersen has wished his Hampshire colleagues the best of luck for their Friends Provident t20 semi-final against Essex on Saturday, after the county confirmed he won’t be selected for the showpiece finals day at the Rose Bowl, despite being one of four England players made available for county duty by the England coach Andy Flower. In a statement, Hampshire confirmed that the club’s policy regarding Pietersen remains the same as when they declined to select him for a CB40 match against Kent last month, a move that stemmed from his comments earlier in the season, in which he confirmed he’d be leaving Hampshire when his contract expires at the end of the summer. He said the commute from his home in Chelsea made it impractical for him to continue at The Rose Bowl and Middlesex are currently the favourites to gain his signature.”The decision remains consistent with the club’s policy to stand by the players who have performed well for them in limited-overs cricket so far this season,” read a statement from the county.”Hampshire would like to re-iterate that this is, by no means, a reflection on Kevin Pietersen as a player or as an individual. However, since Kevin has already made it clear that he intends to play cricket elsewhere next season, the club believes the teams’ best interests are best served by selecting those who have performed so well so far this season, many of whom are aspiring England players, themselves.”Pietersen responded in a post on his Twitter page, in which he played down any perceived falling-out. “I fully understand Hampshire’s position in not selecting me for finals day,” he wrote. “I wish them all the best on the day. I will be watching the lads!”Although Pietersen made a significant contribution to England’s nine-wicket victory against Pakistan at Edgbaston his 80 was a horribly scratchy innings which included three clear-cut dropped chances. Another innings before the third Test at The Oval, and in a format that would allow Pietersen to express himself, may have been welcome but Hampshire are sticking to the batting line-up that has impressed in the tournament to date, with the likes of Michael Lumb, Michael Carberry, Neil McKenzie and James Vince all making contributions.”We are very pleased to be involved in Finals Day, particularly at The Rose Bowl,” said Hampshire’s chairman, Rod Bransgrove. “The players who have got the Royals to this point have made their county and everyone associated with the club very proud. We would, therefore, like to stand by them.”We wish Kevin and England all the very best for the future and all their forthcoming internationals. We look forward to welcoming them back to The Rose Bowl for the England v Pakistan NatWest One-Day International at The Rose Bowl on September 22.”Hampshire’s opponents in the semi-final, Essex, will have Alastair Cook available after he was also made available but that also poses some interesting selection questions. Cook would open the batting, but the combination of Mark Pettini and Ravi Bopara have proved successful in his absence and Cook’s current form is woeful after a tough time against Pakistan. However, Nottinghamshire are unlikely to have any issues including Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann in their starting line-up against Somerset for the other semi-final. Swann was named Man-of-the-Match in the second Test against Pakistan after a career-best 6 for 65 in the second innings and Broad also bagged six wickets in the game, although lost half his match fee after hurling the ball at Zulqarnain Haider on the third day.”We will select the best players available to us and Stuart and Graeme will add significant strength to our team,” said director of cricket Mick Newell. “We’ve used a lot of players to get to finals day and everyone has made a good contribution.”I’ll talk to the players who will have to make way for Stuart and Graeme but everyone understands that we will pick the team that will give us the best possible chance of winning the match and progressing to the final.”

Graças a Deus pude ajudar o time – afirmou Jean Mota.

Quem ganha é o Santos – afirmou Jair Ventura.

Barren bowling stocks herald tricky selection

It is going to be a tricky selection because only eight players select themselves. Only two of them are bowlers

Given the lack of alternatives, the selectors are likely to go back to Sreesanth to share the new ball with Zaheer Khan•Associated Press

The Asia Cup champions would have barely reached their homes when they will be told on Saturday whether they are needed for the Tests in Sri Lanka, which begin on July 18. While the bowling attack looks massively uncertain except for Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh, there is one middle-order place available in the XI and two more in the reserves. It is going to be a tricky selection because only eight players select themselves. Only two of them are bowlers. Ashish Nehra doesn’t trust his body enough to play in Tests, Munaf Patel seems to have been rejected, RP Singh’s form has been ordinary, and Praveen Kumar is strictly a limited-overs bowler. That means India will most likely go back to Ishant Sharma and Sreesanth.Amit Mishra is likely to join them in the bowling department. On their last tour to Sri Lanka, India played the two-seamers-two-spinners combination in all three Tests. So there is a possibility India might go with only three seamers and include Pragyan Ojha as the third spinner. The more orthodox approach would be to pick a fourth seamer, but not many have been showing promise. Lack of readymade choices means there could be a surprise or two. Most of the batting choices seem easier by comparison. Virender Sehwag, who was advised 10 days’ rest after he injured himself during the Asia Cup game against Pakistan, is expected to be picked. Rahul Dravid, who missed the South Africa Tests, will surely come back. Sehwag’s injury, though, makes a case for the selection of M Vijay as a back-up opener who can bat in the middle order if required. The other two spots will be contested by Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma and S Badrinath. Dinesh Karthik, who can open, and also be a back-up wicketkeeper, could be a left-field choice. Karthik could also go solely as a reserve keeper in case India go for a 16-man touring party. His fifty in the Asia Cup final has done his chances no harm.It was pretty clear that Yuvraj’s drop from the ODI side had more to do with his fitness than his form (his statistics weren’t all that bad if the IPL was ignored for a moment, admittedly difficult to do in India). It is for the selectors to decide if dropping him from one tournament has sent home the message. There is a possibility of reading too much into his Twitter message, “This elephant is back from injury and ready to rock!”, which links to a photo of his with an elephant statue.Raina, who was part of India’s squad for their last Test, against South Africa, has reason to be hopeful. While his weakness against the short ball is obvious, it cannot be denied that he has been scoring consistently despite that awkwardness. A week after he played a nice cameo in perhaps the most high-pressure situation of his career could be just the right time to draft him in for the longest format.Raina and Yuvraj will be competing with Badri, who played in India’s last Test, and Rohit, who scored two centuries in Zimbabwe before doing a steady job in the Asia Cup. Cheteshwar Pujara, who scored a double-century in India A’s tour of England and followed it up with another ton against Scotland a day before the selection, stands an outside chance. The squad
Certainties: MS Dhoni (wk & capt.), Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan
Batting hopefuls: M Vijay, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, S Badrinath, Rohit Sharma, Dinesh Karthik, Cheteshwar Pujara
Bowling hopefuls: Ishant Sharma, Sreesanth, Amit Mishra, Pragyan Ojha

Henderson tilts game for Leicestershire

Claude Henderson re-established Leicestershire’s authority with two key wickets in five balls after Surrey had battled their way back in the match

05-Jun-2010

ScorecardClaude Henderson re-established Leicestershire’s authority with two key wickets in five balls after Surrey had battled their way back in the match between the bottom two sides in the County Championship second division at The Oval. Surrey slumped from 110 for 1 to 160 for 6 at the close and now face the prospect of following on on a pitch offering increasing turn.Their prospects had seemed far better when they claimed Leicestershire’s last five wickets for 22 in six overs after lunch, restricting them to a total of 479. And although Arun Harinath was then caught at second slip off Harry Gurney’s fourth ball, Steven Davies and Mark Ramprakash put on a century stand for the second wicket.Davies completed a half-century off 62 balls, but slow left-armer Henderson had already gained psychological successes against Davies and Ramprakash before bagging their wickets. First Davies, who hit 13 fours in his 69, turned Henderson to short square leg, Jigar Naik picking up a sharp catch.Younis Khan took a fortuitous single off his first ball, almost playing on in the process, and Ramprakash (30), edged the last ball of the over to slip. Surrey lost their fourth wicket with the score on 125 when Nathan Buck tumbled low to his left to pull off a brilliant return catch and get rid of Younis.Henderson, who had Rory Hamilton-Brown dropped at slip before he had scored, matched Buck’s effort to get rid of the Surrey captain 10 minutes from the close and in the next over Gareth Batty fell to a catch at short leg.Proceedings had been far more mundane early on, particularly during a first session in which Leicestershire added 104 to their overnight 337 for 4, losing only Jacques du Toit for 81. Tom New, who survived a tough chance to Davies behind the stumps when he had made 27, went on to complete a low-key 50 off 143 balls, and was well supported by Naik in a sixth-wicket stand of 98 in 34 overs.Jade Dernbach, the unlucky bowler when New was reprieved, could count on little assistance from a typically placid Oval pitch, but Surrey’s leading wicket-taker varied his length intelligently to finish with 5 for 87. Naik and Henderson were both bowled by full-length balls while New, who went into the 90s with only his seventh four, attempted to hook Dernbach’s next ball and gloved it to Davies. Offspinner Batty then wrapped up the Leicestershire innings with a sharp caught-and-bowled to dismiss last man Gurney.

Tasmania sign Mark Cosgrove

Mark Cosgrove has been thrown a lifeline having signed with Tasmania in the final round of contract negotiations after being sacked by South Australia

Mark Cosgrove has been thrown a lifeline having signed with Tasmania in the final round of contract negotiations after being sacked by South Australia. Cosgrove, who played one-day international cricket for Australia four years ago, was a surprise axing from the Redbacks’ list for next season and was snapped up by a Tasmania side chasing top-order batting talent. At 25, Cosgrove has plenty of cricket ahead of him, but his weight has been an ongoing issue and contributed to him playing less games than he could have for South Australia. Last summer, he was second on the state’s list of Sheffield Shield averages with 511 runs at 42.58, but he was told there was not a spot for him next season.Cosgrove, who is currently playing with Glamorgan, will add experience to a Tasmania batting line-up that has lost Daniel Marsh to retirement. The Tigers have finalised their squad for 2010-11 and there was no place for Michael Dighton, John Rogers or Wade Irvine, all of whom were delisted from last season’s group. However, they have left the door open for Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, their overseas signing for the Big Bash last summer, to expand his role to the other formats next season. Rana will join the Tigers again for the Twenty20 tournament and, if available, the state will consider him for the four-day and 50-over competitions. The only other addition from the initial squad that was named last week was the former ACT batsman Ashton May, who has been given a rookie deal. Tasmania are keen for more improvement from their developing squad after last summer finishing second-last in the Sheffield Shield but winning the FR Cup.Tasmania squad George Bailey, Travis Birt, Luke Butterworth, Steven Cazzulino, Mark Cosgrove, Ed Cowan, Gerard Denton, Xavier Doherty, Alex Doolan, Brendan Drew, James Faulkner, Brett Geeves, Adam Griffith, Ben Hilfenhaus (Cricket Australia contract), Jason Krejza, Rhett Lockyear, Tim Macdonald, Adam Maher, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, Tim Paine (CA), Ricky Ponting (CA), Jon Wells.Rookies Matthew Day, Brady Jones, Hamish Kingston, Ashton May, Jeremy Smith, Tom Triffitt.

Shillingford stars as West Indies A win by 11 runs

On a day of middling performances from both sides, off-spinner Shane Shillingford’s spell of 4 for 22 made the difference as West Indies A outlasted South Africa A by 11 runs at the Shere Bangla Stadium in Mirpur

On a day of middling performances from both sides, offspinner Shane Shillingford’s spell of 4 for 22 made the difference as West Indies A outlasted South Africa A by 11 runs at the Shere Bangla Stadium in Mirpur.West Indies had to fight hard to earn the victory, after South Africa restricted their progress after losing the toss. Justin Guillen fell to Lonwabo Tsotsobe for a duck in the first over and the innings never really recovered from the early loss. Devon Smith and Travis Dowlin avoided the big shots and focused on laying a platform, scoring 39 each at a sedate pace. However, things went downhill once Dowlin departed with the score 90, as they lost five wickets for 20 runs in a slump that lasted eight overs.Kirk Edwards and Chadwick Walton helped them recover from the morass with a stand of 65 for the seventh wicket. Edwards made 49 off 83 balls, while Walton was the more aggressive, hitting two sixes in his 35-ball 31. Shillingford and Lionel Baker made handy contributions lower down to lift the score past 200. The wickets were shared around equally, as each of the five bowlers picked two apiece. Tsotsobe was the weakest link in an otherwise disciplined show, conceding 65 in 9.3 overs.Morne van Wyk got the chase up and running with a workman-like 51, and he was aided by his top-order colleagues – Jonathan Vandiar and Colin Ingram – as South Africa reached 60 for 1 in the 12th over before Shillingford began to wield his influence. He got Ingram to edge behind, and then dismissed Rilee Rossouw cheaply to bring West Indies back into the game.Ryan Bailey steadied the ship along with van Wyk with a stand of 72, but West Indies kept them under pressure through the middle overs, as the stand consumed 23.3 overs. Nelon Pascal nailed Bailey for 35, and the batsmen who followed found the going tough as the asking rate crept up. David Miller injected some momentum with a 23-ball 26, but when Shillingford removed him in the 44th over, South Africa had lost one wicket too many. Pascal and Shillingford kept attacking, as wickets tumbled at regular intervals, leaving South Africa 11 short when they were bowled out with 13 balls to spare.
