Everton likely to sign 2-3 on deadline day

Everton are likely to sign a couple of players on transfer deadline day as the club moves closer to appointing Frank Lampard in the manager’s dugout at Goodison Park.

What’s the word?

This has been a chaotic transfer window for the Toffees and on deadline day this Monday, it’s set to get even crazier.

As well as being on the verge of appointing Lampard, they are set to welcome Donny van de Beek to the club on loan from Manchester United.

But, the new boss won’t stop there in his pursuit of new signings according to reporter Alan Myers.

The journalist was asked on Twitter on Sunday whether the Dutchman would be the club’s final addition but he responded; “I doubt it.”

Myers then added in another tweet: “I’d guess 2 to 3 [signings] maybe.”

Fans buzzing

After all of the protest and rage that has engulfed Goodison this month, it looks as though Everton are set to end the month on a high.

The appointment of Lampard is ambitious and will take the club in a new direction after the previously appointed Carlo Ancelotti and Rafa Benitez; two individuals with far more coaching experience under their belts.

However, what Lampard has in common with those two, is a lure, particularly for young English players or footballers looking to get their careers back on track.

Van de Beek perfectly fits that description and with Jesse Lingard and Dele Alli also on the club’s radar, this could be a captivating finish to the window.

Myers doesn’t mention who may follow the Man United midfielder through the door but the fact that Lampard is wasting no time in looking to strengthen his squad should be music to the ears of supporters.

After all, this is a team that sit in 16th place in the Premier League after just one win in their last 14 top-flight encounters.

Ajeti, Barkas, Bolingoli set to exit Celtic

Celtic trio Albian Ajeti, Vasilis Barkas and Boli Bolingoli all look set to leave the club this month, according to The Daily Record’s Gabriel McKay.

The Lowdown: Exits needed

The Hoops have been extremely busy when it comes to incomings this month, with Michael Nicholson finalising five signings for Ange Postecoglou’s squad in January. Midfielder Matt O’Riley was the latest to move to Parkhead, penning a deal until 2026 from MK Dons.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-copy/” title=”Celtic updates!! (Copy)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

It seems as if Celtic’s focus now is on moving players out of Glasgow in the final days of the window, with three Neil Lennon acquisitions in line to leave the club.

The Latest: McKay’s claim

McKay shared a transfer news recap on The Daily Record on Saturday evening.

Within his report, he said that Ajeti, Barkas and Bolingoli all ‘look set to go in the opposite direction and follow Leigh Griffiths out of Celtic Park’.

The Verdict: Flops

Celtic paid £4.5m for both Ajeti and Barkas and £3m for Bolingoli. That has proven to be £12m not well spent, with the trio hardly featuring under Postecoglou this season.

Hopefully the Hoops can recoup the majority of the £12m they spent on those three players, but that could be a big ask for CEO Nicholson with only a few days remaining in the transfer window.

If you use Transfermarkt’s valuations, for example, the Hoops could land just £4.95m, as Ajeti’s value has dropped from £4.05m to £2.25m as a Celtic player, Barkas’ going from £4.5m to £1.35m and Bolingoli’s falling from £2.7m to £1.35m.

Wolves linked with Salcedo transfer

Despite boasting an impressive defensive record in the Premier League this season with just 14 goals conceded in 19 games, it seems as though Wolves are looking to the January transfer window as an opportunity to strengthen their squad at the back as they aim to secure a European place by the end of the current campaign under the guidance of Bruno Lage.

In a recent report from W Deportes, Wolves are apparently interested in signing Tigres defender Carlos Salcedo this month.

The 28-year-old joined the Mexican club from Eintracht Frankfurt back in the 2019 January transfer window after previous spells at clubs such as Deportivo Guadalajara, Fiorentina and Real Salt Lake City, winning some trophies in the process.

Since his move to Tigres, the defender has made a total of 101 appearances across all competitions, scoring seven goals along the way, showing how much of a danger he can be in front of goal as well.

Last season, Salcedo, who was dubbed as a potentially “massive” acquisition for a possible suitor this month by Rudi Schuller, ended Tigres’ league campaign as their joint-sixth highest rated player with an overall performance rating of 7.01/10 from SofaScore.

That would have made him Wolves’ fourth-highest rated player in the Premier League last season, showing how capable he could be in Lage’s side if he were to make a move to Molineux this month.

Salcedo’s latest performance for Tigres in their 1-1 draw against Santos Laguna saw him not only score his side’s goal but also make three clearances, four interceptions and one tackle, ultimately earning himself an outstanding overall match rating of 7.8/10, making him the highest-rated player on the day according to SofaScore.

With Lage reiterating the need for Wolves to sign a centre-back as soon as possible with Romain Saiss away on international duty and Willy Boly injured, Jeff Shi could solve Lage’s big issue with a move for Salcedo, who is currently valued at £4.5m according to Transfermarkt, in the coming days and weeks.

Moving forward, with Salcedo’s contract at Tigres set to expire at the end of December, this could cause the Mexican club to be more willing to sell their defender to Wolves this month rather than risk him leaving on a free transfer at the end of the year if he doesn’t put pen to paper on a new deal before then.

India survive stunning South African fightback

India were coasting towards a convincing victory before a spirited late fightback from the South African tail made the home side sweat right upto the final delivery

The Bulletin by Sriram Veera21-Feb-2010
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
How they were outRavindra Jadeja and Suresh Raina were two of the key contributors to the win•AFP

It went down to the last ball but when Jacques Kallis fell in the 43rd over, with South Africa requiring an improbable 74 from 43 balls and only two wickets in hand, it looked like game, set and match to India. From there, Dale Steyn and Wayne Parnell threatened to pull of an incredible heist but India held their nerve to clinch a final-ball win in Jaipur. The quality of cricket was actually below-par from both sides – India’s bowling threatened to completely disintegrate under the pressure and barring Kallis, South Africa’s batting was quite dismal – but the contest was made memorable by the tailenders Steyn and Parnell. This is how it panned out in the end: Steyn lashed two straight sixes in the 46th over bowled by Suresh Raina, the pair pinched three boundaries in the 48th over bowled by an errant Sreesanth and when both batsmen struck audacious sixes down the ground against Ashish Nehra in the 49th over, South Africa required only 10 from the last over.Praveen Kumar bowled Steyn with a slower one off the second delivery but the drama wasn’t over yet. Charl Langeveldt pulled the penultimate delivery to long leg where Sachin Tendulkar dived full-stretch to prevent the boundary. Many replays later, the third umpire ruled it a legal save and South Africa had to be content with three runs but had the well-set Parnell on strike for the last delivery. More excitement lay ahead as Praveen hurled a wide leaving South Africa needing three to win. Parnell squeezed out the final delivery to third man where Sreesanth fielded the ball cleanly and threw in a slightly wide throw but MS Dhoni had enough time to break the stumps with Parnell just one yard short of levelling the scores.Until those dramatic end overs where India threatened to choke, they had actually done most things necessary to win the game. No batsman got a big score, but there were enough handy contributions from the top-order to push India to a strong 298. No bowler got more than two wickets but there was enough combined discipline in the attack, till they crumbled under the Steyn & Parnell show, to restrict South Africa. For their part, South Africa might have come very close in the end but the stand-in captain Jacques Kallis was the only top-order batsman to offer any resistance in the chase where Ravindra Jadeja starred for India with his unspectacular but steady spell of left-arm spin where he used the arm-ball quite liberally to keep the batsmen honest. When Jadeja came on to bowl South Africa were sitting pretty at 60 for 1 from nine overs. When he finished his first spell that read 8-2-23-2, and included the vital wickets of Herschelle Gibbs and AB de Villiers, South Africa had slowed down to 127 for 3 from 24 overs. He didn’t get the ball to turn but repeatedly slipped the one that went straight on with the arm to suffocate the batsmen. The ball also tended to skid on in this surface and at times kept a touch low and the batsmen struggled to put away his armers. He lured Gibbs to slice to long-off and troubled both Kallis and de Villiers with his skidding deliveries. de Villiers tried to wriggle free with an attempted cut shot that proved fatal as he completely failed to connect. From then on South Africa were always chasing their own tail despite Kallis’ effort and though Steyn and Parnell played the one-day innings of their lives, they fell short in the end.Like South Africa, India too didn’t have any centurion today but, unlike the visitors, there were enough contributions to charge them to a strong score. On a day when Virender Sehwag played a couple of typically stunning shots – a slashed six over third man and another flamboyantly carved over covers being the picks – two innings, from men who are yet to secure their spots in the playing eleven, caught the eye. Karthik’s entertaining 44 and Raina’s attractive 58 stood out for their sparkling shots, and also for their untimely dismissals. Both fell when they were well-set and had the opportunity to take India to an unassailable position.Jacques Kallis got little support from the other top-order batsmen•AFP

India were at 32 for the loss of Tendulkar in seven overs when Karthik started to go for his shots. Until then, he was playing the conventional strokes and even timing them well but was unable to find the gaps.Everything changed in the eighth over bowled by Parnell. The first ball, a short of a length delivery outside off stump, was flat-batted – a forehand cross-court swat – over the bowler’s head. Off the third delivery, he walked down the track to upset the line and length and whipped through midwicket for another boundary and a pull off the fifth delivery fetched him a couple before he collected another pulled boundary off the last ball.Karthik continued to innovate and play the big shots – a slog-swept six against Johan Botha being the highlight – before he fell. This ability to manufacture shots and pull out the big hits irrespective of the match situation has been his strength and weakness. Shot selection hasn’t always been his strong point but it looked like today was going to be his day until he was dismissed against the run of play, mistiming a pull shot off Langeveldt straight to mid-on.Raina took over after Karthik’s exit, starting off with a delightful, on-the-up, cover-driven boundary off Albie Morkel, and handled himself well against the short stuff from Kallis. The pitch was a flat beauty and there wasn’t great pace or bounce to cause any trouble and Raina collected boundaries with upper cuts and a couple of pull shots. He went on to heave a back-of-length delivery from Parnell over wide long-on boundary but in the 44th over, with India on 260 for 6, he moved away from the stumps to try an expansive inside-out drive over the covers, only to edge Kallis behind the wicket. It was left to the tail to push India towards 300, which proved more than enough in the end courtesy a fine spell from Jadeja. Kallis carried on gamely with a characteristic innings but he received no support from his team-mates: Mark Boucher edged a slightly wide delivery, Alviro Petersen was run out as he failed to ground his bat, and both Morkel and Botha fell playing across the line. Kallis dealt in singles initially, put away most of the bad balls, and tried to manufacture a few big shots in the end overs but the stiff target proved too much for him to pull off a one-man-show. Steyn and Parnell nearly pulled off the improbable but couldn’t complete a fairy-tale finish.

Spurs: Lloris close to contract agreement

Tottenham Hotspur are close to finalising Hugo Lloris’ contract extension…

What’s the word?

That is according to the ever-reliable Alasdair Gold of football.london, who delivered what he described as “a positive update” on the current situation.

‘football.london understands that with talks finally having begun, Lloris’ new contract is expected to be finalised very soon, with the keeper keen to stay and what are believed to be modest demands from him deemed more than reasonable by the club,” he wrote in an accompanying article this week.

The 35-year-old’s £100k-per-week contract was due to expire at the end of the season, so this claim will serve as a major boost to manager Antonio Conte, the squad and the fanbase.

Conte will be delighted

Indeed, the Italian head coach will be loving this news from behind the scenes at Hotspur Way.

Conte’s history with goalkeepers suggests that he likes one solid option between the sticks across all competitions and that’s exactly what he gets with Lloris, who has proven to be a reliable and vastly-experienced choice over the years.

“Hugo today showed that he is at the top and he is always focused and for us, he is very important and I am sure that in the short time they can find a solution in the club because he loves Tottenham and Tottenham loves him,” the 52-year-old told reporters after the win over Watford on New Years Day.

The World Cup winner is on the cusp of joining the 400-club at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – should things go their way, he will reach that feat in February, having played 394 times since arriving in a £12m deal from Lyon in September 2012.

In that time, Lloris has kept 134 clean sheets and whilst on the face of it, that’s not overwhelmingly exciting, he has not had a solid backline in front of him for several seasons now. If anything, his presence has stopped them from leaking even more goals in recent times.

“He is brave, performance, quality he showed he is one of the best in the world, no doubt,” once claimed former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino.

The fact that the club are close to agreeing on fresh terms is indeed positive and that should leave Conte a little less worried heading into the summer. He’ll be delighted to tie his no.1 down for the foreseeable.

Cricinfo previews the Ranji Trophy final between Karnataka and Mumbai to be held in Mysore

Start time 09.30 (0400 GMT)Mumbai have been bested in only four out of 42 Ranji Trophy finals•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Big PictureMumbai are perhaps the ultimate big-match domestic cricket team in the world, bested in only four of their 42 appearances in the finals of the Ranji Trophy. They have won four titles in the last seven years and in a tournament where first-innings leads usually prove decisive, their batsmen have racked up 350-plus totals in each of their previous five matches.Still, heading into the final, it is their opponents, Karnataka, who start favourites. After a decade of mostly lacklustre cricket, a new-look Karnataka have been the most powerful team on the circuit this season, with four outright victories. Their pace trio has tormented opposition batsmen to such an extent that the Ranji final has been shifted to the quaint Gangothri Glades in Mysore, in the hope that the grass-topped pitch there will support the quicks more than the benign surface at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. The batting unit, so dependent on Rahul Dravid – who is unavailable for the final – and Robin Uthappa in the past, has had five other batsmen make two or more centuries this season. The bowling has also been boosted by youngsters coming to the fore; Abhimanyu Mithun and S Aravind have reduced the wicket-taking burden off the more experienced R Vinaykumar and Sunil Joshi.Mumbai, though, have loads of experience in dealing with high-pressure matches; among the home side’s players, only Uthappa and Joshi have been involved in five-day games. Another of Mumbai’s strengths is the depth in batting. Besides the recognised allrounder Abhiskeh Nayar, they also have the trio of Ajit Agarkar, Ramesh Powar and Iqbal Abdulla, each of whom has made game-changing contributions with the bat this season. With the final being a five-day fixture, and the track suited to fastbowling, an outright result is likely. Besides Mumbai’s outstandingshowing in past finals, they possess one more record that will hearten them: they have never lost outright to Karnataka in 76 seasons of the Ranji Trophy.Form Guide(last five completed matches, most recent first)Karnataka DDWWW
Mumbai DDDDDPlayers to watchRobin Uthappa was the stand-out batsman for Karnataka last season. This year, though, while his team has prospered his personal form has been rocky. He is yet to make a century after 10 innings, and there have been few significant contributions. Karnataka’s first Ranji final in 11 years provides the big stage for him to remind the national selectors of his abilites. In the absence of Sachin Tendulkar and Rohit Sharma, and in the face of a strong Karnataka attack, the consistent pair of Wasim Jaffer and Ajinkya Rahane will have to deliver again. Their battle against the home side’s new-ball pair of Mithun and Vinaykumar will be pivotal to the match’s result.Team newsBesides the forced change of a replacement for Dravid, who is heading to Bangladesh for the two-Test series starting on January 17, Karnataka will not tweak the combination that took them through to the finals. The choice for the vacancy is between allrounders B Akhil and Stuart Binny, with a decision to be made on Monday morning. Binny, being the better batsman, is tipped to make the XI.Karnataka: 1 Robin Uthappa (capt), 2 KB Pawan, 3 Amit Verma, 4Manish Pandey, 5 CM Gautam (wk), 6 Ganesh Satish, 7 Stuart Binny/B Akhil, 8 R Vinay Kumar, 9 Sunil Joshi, 10 A Mithun, 11 S Arvind.Mumbai are boosted by the news that both Nayar and Dhawal Kulkarni are fully fit after injury scares. Captain Jaffer was tight-lipped about the line-up for the final, but there shouldn’t be too many changes besides Usman Malvi making way for Kulkarni.Mumbai: 1 Wasim Jaffer (capt), 2 Sahil Kukreja, 3 Ajinkya Rahane, 4 Onkar Khanvilkar 5 Abhishek Nayar, 6 Vinayak Samant (wk), 7 Ajit Agarkar, 8 Ramesh Powar, 9 Iqbal Abdulla, 10 Dhawal Kulkarni, 11 Aavishkar SalviPitch and conditionsAfter a raft of featherbeds this season, the surface at the GangothriGlades should be one that excites the fast bowlers with its bounce and carry. There is plenty of grass on the track, and Uthappa was satisfied with the conditions at hand. “Obviously it is a wicket which will help our fast bowlers,” he said. “We are playing to our strengths and why not?” The outfield is a bit bumpy and has already been criticised by Mumbai coach Praveen Amre.Quotes”How many times they have won is only for the record books. I don’t think it counts for this game.”

“Obviously, the [nature of the] wicket is not in our hands. They arehosting it, and I’m sure they are happy with the wicket. We are also more than happy.”
