Wolves: Saiss available for Man Utd clash

Wolves have received a huge boost with the news that Romain Saiss will be available for the upcoming clash against Manchester United.

The Lowdown: Saiss superb for Wolves

Wanderers have thrived with Bruno Lage adopting a three-man defence this season, conceding just 14 times in 18 Premier League matches to date.

Saiss has been a key part of that success, forming a strong partnership with Max Kilman and Conor Coady, not to mention being hailed by his manager as “Maldini from Morocco”.

The 31-year-old is set to represent his country at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), however, and his involvement in the trip to Old Trafford on January 3 has been in doubt.

The Latest: Saiss available for Man United clash

Thankfully, Saiss will be available for the United clash, with The Express & Star’s Liam Keen confirming as much on Monday morning.

In his report, he stated that Europe-based players taking part in AFCON were expected to leave their clubs this week, but after the Confederation of African Football received requests to change that, they will now depart after the first set of fixtures in January.

The Verdict: Big boost for Lage

Saiss has been such a strong performer for Wolves this season, not only starting all 18 league games but also scoring twice, so this is a big boost for Lage. He tops the squad for aerial duels won (2.6) and interceptions (1.9) per game in the league during 2021/22 so far.

His experience at the back will be crucial against a United side who have found their feet under interim manager Ralf Rangnick, with a busy evening potentially on the cards for Wanderers’ defence.

Saiss will be a big loss when he heads off on AFCON duty, but the hope is that Wolves will battle on without him for a few matches in January before welcoming him back with open arms.

While Wanderers fans wouldn’t begrudge seeing their player doing well in the tournament, they surely won’t be too upset if Morocco end up being eliminated early and Saiss is back at Molineux before long.

NUFC: Magpies in talks over Badiashile deal

An update has emerged on Newcastle United’s pursuit of Monaco monster Benoit Badiashile…

What’s the talk?

According to the Daily Mail, the Magpies are plotting a swoop for the defender and are currently in talks with the Ligue 1 club over a deal for him this month.

The report claims that he is valued at £35m by the French side and it remains to be seen whether or not Newcastle are willing to meet their demands.

Buzzing

Eddie Howe will surely be buzzing with this news for several reasons. For starters, he will be delighted that the club are actively making moves to strengthen the defence, with talks having already been opened over a transfer for Badiashile.

It shows that they are not willing to waste time and wait until the end of the window to make signings. They want to strengthen the team as quickly as possible and this will please the ex-Bournemouth boss as his team is in dire need of reinforcements.

The Magpies are 19th in the Premier League and have only won one game all season. This shows that the current crop of players have not been good enough for a team that wants to avoid relegation, which is why PIF must splash the cash to improve Howe’s options ahead of the second half of the season.

One of Newcastle’s biggest issues has been their defence. They have conceded the most goals in the division (42) and the signing of Badiashile could improve their backline. The 20-year-old has averaged a solid SofaScore rating of 6.79 in Ligue 1 for Monaco this term, after managing a score of 6.91 in 32 starts last season.

He helped the French side to keep nine clean sheets in the 2020/21 campaign as he won 63% of his duels and made 2.4 tackles and interceptions per game. This shows that he can consistently provide strong defensive performances at the top level, winning the majority of his duels and helping his team to keep shutouts – something Newcastle have struggled with this season as they sit on one clean sheet after 19 matches.

Therefore, Howe will be buzzing with the prospect of Badiashile arriving at St. James’ Park. Not only is he a player with immense potential, given his performances in Ligue 1 at the age of 20, but he has also proven that he can perform in the here and now and the Magpies need the defensive monster in their bid to avoid relegation down to the second tier.

Newcastle eyeing deal for Pontus Jansson

An update has emerged on Brentford central defender Pontus Jansson, regarding Newcastle United’s interest in his services…

What’s the talk?

According to The Guardian, the Magpies are one of three Premier League sides lining up a swoop for the ex-Leeds enforcer ahead of the January transfer window.

The report claims that Leicester and Everton are also looking at him as a potential target, with his contract at the London club set to expire next summer.

Crucial issue

Eddie Howe may solve a crucial Newcastle issue by sealing a deal for Jansson in January – the leaky defence they have suffered from in the opening 16 games of the campaign.

They have conceded a whopping 34 goals in the Premier League, the most in the entire division, and are currently 19th in the table.

Brentford, meanwhile, have only conceded 22 goals – fewer than nine other teams – and Jansson has started all 16 of their games. This shows that he has been a key part of their success at the back and proves that he is capable of performing well at Premier League level, with his defensive record at the newly-promoted side being far better than Newcastle’s is currently.

Bees boss Thomas Frank previously lauded the defender’s ‘immense’ professionalism and hailed the experience he brings to the side. He said:

“Pontus is a top defender who brings immense professionalism, a great attitude, experience, defensive robustness, leadership qualities, and threat from set-pieces to our side.

“Everyone knows about the Brentford model but to develop the young players we have here, we also need experience and quality in the squad to get the perfect balance.”

The £24k-per-week colossus has averaged 4.8 clearances and 2.3 tackles and interceptions per game for Brentford in the top-flight, whilst also chipping in with one goal and one assist to help the attackers. This shows that he has been an active part of their defensive success and why he could come in and solve Newcastle’s problems in that area.

Howe’s team are struggling badly in their own box and Jansson’s form and defensive record for the Bees suggests that he could come in and have a positive impact on the side. This is why PIF must splash the cash and bring the 30-year-old to St. James’ Park in January to bolster the squad and solve a crucial issue in the team.

Celtic: Alan Hutton reacts to David Turnbull injury

Pundit Alan Hutton has been reacting to the injury Celtic midfielder David Turnbull sustained last weekend in the League Cup final, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Hamstring injury; expert’s thoughts

Turnbull missed his first game under Ange Postecoglou on Wednesday in the 0-0 draw with St. Mirren after hobbling off with a hamstring issue at Hampden Park on the weekend.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-20/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Postecoglou was awaiting results of a scan to learn the extent of Turnbull’s problem, with injury expert Ben Dinnery telling Football Insider it would be down to fatigue and could keep him out for up to two months.

Celtic will soon have the chance to have a breather with the winter break, but should Turnbull miss two months, he wouldn’t be available for the Glasgow derby, despite the fact it has been put back four weeks to February 2.

The Latest: Hutton’s comments

Hutton, who regularly works for BBC Radio 5 Live, was talking to Football Insider regarding Turnbull’s injury.

This is what he had to say in reply, labelling it as a potential ‘massive miss’.

“They‘ll be worried about that Old Firm game.

“Especially if Turnbull and Jota are both out.

“Even Rangers are trying to protect Joe Aribo from getting that yellow card suspension. That just shows you what a massive game it is in terms of the league title race.

“Turnbull has been one of their top performers this season. He’ll be a massive miss. They’ll have to be careful. It’s a hamstring injury that could keep him out for a long time.”

The Verdict: Not good…

Should Turnbull miss the meeting with Rangers at the beginning of February, it would be a big blow.

He’s been Celtic’s best-rated performer this season in the Scottish Premiership (to have played at least five games), averaging more key passes and crosses per 90 than any of his teammates. [WhoScored]

The Hoops may also be without top scorer Kyogo Furuhashi and regular Tom Rogic against Rangers due to possible international commitments.

Being without three star men against your biggest rivals is never good news, and the meeting at Parkhead could have a major say in the race for the Scottish Premiership title, with Celtic currently six points behind.

Brendan Nash returns to roots under spotlight

The former Queensland batsman will be in demand for the rest of the month as family and friends chase him for tales of his new life as a West Indian cricketer

Brendan Nash, the former Queensland batsman, will be in demand for the rest of the month as family and friends chase him for tales of his new life as a West Indian cricketer. But Nash will also be harassed by his captain Chris Gayle.Nash, who has averaged 38.23 in nine Tests, grew up in Queensland, spent seven seasons with the Bulls and at one stage shared a house with Mitchell Johnson, his soon-to-be opponent. Given the state of the West Indies squad following their strike, he could still know more about his hosts than his team-mates.”I think he’s going to give me some advice,” Gayle said. “To be his hometown and the team he used to represent, he’ll be looking forward to doing well.”Nash was met at Brisbane airport by his mother Andrea, who moved with her husband Paul to Australia in 1977, the year their son was born in Perth. His parents have watched him play in New Zealand and the Caribbean, but will not have far to travel for the first Test at the Gabba on November 26.”It will be a little bit strange [being back in Brisbane] but I guess I’ve played there quite a bit,” he said. “I know the conditions and can pass that information on to my team-mates and put us in good stead with a win in the tour match and get us moving forward towards the first Test.”He also expects Johnson to target him in a repeat of their net sessions over the years with Queensland and the Norths club. “I’d like to think he is going to try to get me out more than anything,” he said. “I’m sure there is going to be a fair bit of that sort of stuff. It’s going to be a huge challenge for not only myself, if I’m playing, but the whole team.”Gayle was an important figure in Nash’s successful move to Jamaica in 2007 and is confident he will do well. “The challenge will be on him and I’m sure he will be able to handle himself,” Gayle said. “He’s done pretty decent so far in Test cricket and we’re happy to have him. Hopefully he can pick off from where he left off against England and gets some runs against the Aussies.”

PCB audit reveals massive financial mismanagement

A comprehensive audit of the PCB covering a period of five financial years up to June 2008 has unveiled a spectacular depth of financial ineptitude

Osman Samiuddin26-Nov-2009

Nasim Ashraf’s tenure as PCB chairman came under the audit period•AFP

A comprehensive government-organised audit of the PCB covering a period of five financial years up to June 2008 has unveiled the spectacular depth of financial ineptitude, mismanagement and wastefulness of the administration of three chairmen this decade: Tauqir Zia, Shaharyar Khan and Nasim Ashraf.Criticism over the way the board has been run has never been mild, but the audit report, conducted on the request of Pakistan’s sports ministry, will provide further fuel to the ire of those who say that the board has never been as poorly managed, as it has been this decade. Though not a public document, the report has found its way to several media outlets.According to the report, the PCB’s annual expenditures have nearly doubled from Rs 571 million in 2004 to Rs 1.8 billion in 2008. The board recorded a surplus budget of just over Rs1 billion in 2004, but by 2008 that had been whittled down, staggeringly, to a deficit of Rs 130 million. How that has happened is clear from the report.Money has been lost from non-recovery of rent (nearly Rs 25 million), it has been squandered and not recovered on legal bills of players such as Mohammad Yousuf and Mohammad Asif (over Rs 20 million); Rs 65 million, says the report, has been wasted on development projects with no results; Rs 44 million was spent on procuring equipment for a biomechanical analysis lab for the national cricket academy, which has since been lying unused; Rs 67 million is estimated to have been lost because the board didn’t implement the recommendation of its own finance committee in 2005 to re-invest its foreign currency earnings in local currency accounts. The audit also estimated a loss of nearly Rs 6 billion due to the failure of successive administrations to get nearly 60 acres of land it owns around the National Stadium in Karachi vacated from illegal occupation. The list goes on.As disconcerting as the waste has been the lack of procedure and the ad-hoc way in which the board has run its financial dealings. The report criticizes the board for not clearly defining the role and limits of the chairman’s powers, especially when it comes to financial control. The ambiguity allowed Nasim Ashraf, for example, to announce a bonus of Rs 19.50 million for players without mandatory approval from the governing board. In much the same, arbitrary way, cars and unsecured advances to staff – totally nearly Rs 20 million – have been handed out without approval. The report also calculated expenditure of nearly Rs 150 million carried out without the support of proper documentation, as well as chiding the board for not providing, for the audit, over a 100 documents. Additionally, the board, it says, has consistently hired employees and awarded contracts without following the proper procedure. One example was the five-year TV rights deal the board signed with Ten Sports in 2003 – worth US$ 42.6 million – for which no bidding documents were provided. The most evident message from the audit seems to be that not only have boards knowingly wasted money, they have had little clear idea of how an organisation is run and organised. The current administration of Ijaz Butt – which began in October 2008 – does not come under the period audited and so is not implicated in any way. On taking over Butt openly talked of the financial mismanagement of preceding administrations and launched an austerity drive to cut down on expenses. Efforts were made to cut down on staff numbers – allegedly over 800 during Ashraf’s time – and on related perks, but the effects of that will only be known when details of the next audit emerge.”Expenditure on the 2008-2009 budgets, which was approved under former administration, was cut to half of the approved amount, saving over a billion rupees,” Butt said. “The budget on 2009-2010 also stands on less than half of the amount of approved budget of the last year. It was done by carrying out a comprehensive cost cutting in all financial matters by cutting expenditures, streamlining staffing, and adopting a policy of austerity in all matters of the Board during his term.”

LUFC dealt double injury blow

Leeds United’s latest Premier League outing saw them scrape a 2-2 draw at Elland Road against Brentford thanks to a last-gasp goal from striker Patrick Bamford from the substitutes bench.

Despite managing to rescue a point from the game right at the death, Leeds were unfortunately struck with two concerning injury worries that forced a couple of their key players off the pitch.

What’s the news?

With defender Liam Cooper and midfielder Kalvin Phillips both picking up injuries in the match against Thomas Frank’s side, Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa said after the game that he doesn’t know “what type of injuries they have nor how long they’re going to take to recover.”

Given the lack of clarity at the moment it would presumably be rather concerning for the Leeds fans at the moment regarding the injured duo, however, with details likely to follow at some point this week, it’s safe to say that many supporters will have their fingers crossed that their fitness issues aren’t severe.

Taking into account how Leeds have only just welcomed back Luke Ayling and Patrick Bamford back to action after being out for a significant period with injuries, Bielsa will surely be fuming if he has to deal with the prospect of having Phillips and Cooper now out on the sidelines too,

With Phillips and Cooper being two of the four outfield Leeds players that have racked up more than 1000 minutes of Premier League action so far this season alongside Raphinha and Stuart Dallas, this shows not only how important they are to the team but how much of a blow it would be to have them out injured.

After all, Cooper is the club captain and his midfield colleague is now a successful England international.

Additionally, with Leeds having conceded 22 goals in 15 league games so far this season and the fact that after the Chelsea match at the weekend, they have Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool to deal with before January, it’s safe to say that they could really do with having the spine of their team available for these games to give the Yorkshire club the best chance of picking up some points to stay away from the relegation zone.
