Lingard’s agents watched Newcastle clash

Pete Graves has provided an update on England international Jesse Lingard, relating to Newcastle’s pursuit of his services.

What’s the talk?

According to the Sky Sports journalist, the Manchester United man’s agents were in attendance for the Magpies’ 3-2 defeat to Tottenham as they are keeping a close eye on developments at the club.

He wrote: “I understand Lingard’s representatives were at St James’s Park yesterday keeping an eye on developments at #nufc.”

Lingard has been linked with a potential switch to St. James’ Park following PIF’s takeover of the club, with the January window just over two months away.

Fans will be buzzing

Newcastle fans will surely be left buzzing by this update from Graves as it suggests that there is potential interest from Lingard’s side to get a deal done. The initial Telegraph report stated that it was unclear whether or not the midfielder would be keen on the switch, but this latest development indicates that he is actively considering it by sending the relevant people to St. James’ Park.

The supporters will be delighted by that because Lingard is a proven Premier League performer who could come in and improve the team. He has shown throughout his career that he can score and assist goals, with 29 goals and 17 assists in 153 matches at Premier League level – mainly playing for United.

Last season, Lingard scored nine goals and provided five assists in 16 games on loan to West Ham in the top-flight, which means that he has a recent track record of performing to a high level.

United icon Andy Cole also hailed Lingard’s infectious nature earlier this year, hailing the impact he has on others. He said:

“I think Jesse has come back with that bit between his teeth. He has got the goal, but it is not just about the goal – it is his work rate as well.

“I think his work rate can become infectious. He is putting himself about, getting in the right areas – and getting himself a goal as well.”

Therefore, he could provide quality in the final third whilst also working hard off the ball to harass the opposition and drive his teammates on. This is why Newcastle fans will be delighted that he appears to be exploring the possibility of a transfer to Tyneside ahead of the January window.

Jamie How will lead New Zealand A against England Lions for the first of two four-day matches in Queenstown. How, 27, was dropped from the New Zealand squad for the final two matches of the home ODI series against West Indies last following his extended run of poor form. How disappointed in his last three ODI series, scoring 105 runs at an average of 21 in the five-match series in England last year, and 80 at 21.33 in Bangladesh. In the series against West Indies, he managed only 27 runs in two matches. In the 18 Tests he has played, How has scored 771 runs at 23.36.The focus will also be on James Franklin, returning from a long injury lay-off following knee surgery last year. He featured in the West Indies series but didn’t make an immediate impact. He also played the one-off Twenty20 in Australia, bowled one over and scored three runs. The performances were not good enough to warrant him a place in New Zealand’s Twenty20 squad to take on India.Glenn Turner, New Zealand’s chairman of selectors, said the series would provide an opportunity to both established and younger players to get time in the longer form of the game.”Jamie How has agreed to captain the side, and this will give him an opportunity to find some form in a four-day setting,” Turner said. “James Franklin also has a good chance to show whether he can regain the form he’s shown in Test cricket previously with the ball and also show his improvement with the bat.”In James Franklin, Trent Boult and Mitchell McClenaghan, the side would have three left-arm fast bowlers. “That’s a bit unusual – and a good place to be in given that we have not had many left-arm quicks performing at this level in recent years,” Turner said.New Zealand A play the England Lions in four-day games in Queenstown, from March 1 to 4, and in Lincoln from March 7 to 10. The series finishes with two one-dayers at Palmerston North on March 13 and 16, and a Twenty20 at New Plymouth on March 19.Squad: Jamie How, Brent Arnel, Trent Boult, James Franklin, Peter Ingram, Mitchell McClenaghan, Tim McIntosh, Bruce Martin, BJ Watling (wk), Kane Williamson, Luke Woodcock, Reece Young

Tottenham transfer news on Meunier

Thomas Meunier has now revealed how close he was to signing for Tottenham Hotspur before joining Borussia Dortmund instead.

The Lowdown: Contract run down

There would not have been a shortage of interested suitors when Meunier decided to run his contract down at Paris Saint Germain back in the 2019 summer transfer window, and he ended up signing for Dortmund on a free a year later.

Valued at £21.6m at the time, it was certainly a bargain for the German outfit.

He has since gone on to win the German Cup with the Bundesliga giants, after achieving so many accolades at PSG (Transfermarkt).

The Latest: Tottenham revelation

As per AS, Meunier has now revealed that he could have gone to Spurs instead of Dortmund, among a couple of European heavyweights in Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan:

“I was able to go to other teams like Atletico, Tottenham or Inter, but in Dortmund the atmosphere is special. I live football with passion. Here in Dortmund you live the games in a very special way and that brought me here. It’s extraordinary.”

The Verdict: Shame

It is certainly a shame that the Lilywhites missed out on signing Meunier, especially on a free.

It seems they have only now solved their right-back situation by bringing in Emerson Royal from FC Barcelona, but Meunier would have been a perfect fit when also considering the business sense behind getting a £20m player for nothing.

Recently likened to David Beckham for his crossing ability by his Dortmund teammate Jude Bellingham, the Belgium international has a knack for an assist, with three already in four games in total over all competitions so far this season (Transfermarkt).

Nonetheless, to not pay a penny in transfer fees for a player of his calibre would have represented great business by Daniel Levy, especially in the midst of the pandemic.

Michael Clarke’s back injury has forced him out of the Twenty20 against New Zealand in Sydney on Sunday and he will be replaced by Victoria’s Rob Quiney. Mitchell Johnson will also miss the game due to an ankle problem and the pair will rest ahead of Monday’s departure to South Africa.Brad Haddin will lead the team while Cameron White will be his deputy. “It’s unfortunate that Michael Clarke has been forced to miss the game due to injury,” Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of selectors, said. “Given the side leaves for South Africa the morning after the game in Sydney, there was really no alternative but to take a conservative approach tomanagement of this minor injury.”It does present a great opportunity for Rob Quiney to join the Australian squad. Rob has performed well in Twenty20 cricket this year, with probably the highlight being his excellent innings in the Big Bash final.”Australia’s physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said: “Michael Clarke has been experiencing back pain since the one-day game in Adelaide this week. While he’s made some improvement over the last three or four days, the decision has been made to withdraw him from the Twenty20 game on Sunday in order to maximise his recovery time in advance of Australia’s tour of South Africa.”Mitchell has a niggling injury to his right ankle, which has been causing him discomfort.” Johnson received a cortisone injection but is expected to be fit for the tour game in Potchefstroom next week.

Daniel Vettori, the New Zealand captain, has welcomed the news of India possibly playing an extra Test on their tour to his country. “I’m pretty excited,” Vettori said. “I think most players have been crying out for that third Test-match style series.”A gap has opened in India’s international calendar after their tour of Pakistan was called off and the BCCI has sent a request to New Zealand Cricket to add another match to the two-Test series.New Zealand’s coach Andy Moles has already given his thumbs-up for the idea.India will make their way to New Zealand in March on the back of two series wins – at home – against Australia and England and Vettori said it would be exciting to compete against “one of the best teams in the world”.”I think everyone would love to make it happen. I’m not sure if logistically it can happen but if it’s do-able, I’d love to see it happen.”After their ODI series against West Indies concludes on January 13, New Zealand head to Australia for five one-dayers in February. The series against India starts on March 6 with a Twenty20, followed by five ODIs and two Tests, the second of which ends on April 7. With the Indian Premier League scheduled to start on April 10, the only way to fit in an extra Test is to begin the tour earlier.

Mike Ashley had a NUFC masterclass with Perez

While Mike Ashley certainly hasn’t done much good at Newcastle United – the numerous fan protests are a testament to that – the one thing he did get spot-on, was his sale of Ayoze Perez.

Having signed him from Tenerife for just £1.5m, there’s no questioning that Newcastle got their money’s worth from Perez.

The Spaniard arrived as a little-known youngster back in the summer of 2014, but then Magpies boss Alan Pardew wasn’t shy in waxing lyrical about his latest recruit.

He said: “We’re delighted to confirm our first signing of the summer and very pleased to have Ayoze at Newcastle United, as a number of other clubs were chasing his signature too.

“He had a terrific season in Spain last year and is a player who we hope to develop further on Tyneside. He’s only 20 but has a very good eye for goal and that’s a great asset for any young player to have.”

Perez ended up playing 195 times for the club, scoring 48 goals and providing a further 17 assists across all competitions. He made his biggest contribution for the club during Rafa Benitez’s stint as manager, making over 100 appearances for his fellow Spaniard.

The former Newcastle boss even said: “Ayoze is a player that is keen to learn and I am telling him all the time it is about staying consistent. He has given us a lot of things. But the main thing for me is he knows that he can improve and he is keen to learn.”

In the end, following Benitez’s departure from the club, Perez also followed suit. The Magpies got some big-money for the forward though, collecting a reported £30m from fellow Premier League side Leicester, thus making them an impressive £28.5m profit.

And since his move to the Foxes, the 28-year-old hasn’t shown much to justify the price tag, playing 79 times and scoring just 11 goals, struggling to break into the side on a consistent basis – not surprising when you consider he has Jamie Vardy in front of him.

In fact, according to CIES, his market value now just stands at a measly £6m – quite the significant drop-off from what the Foxes paid for him to bring him in from St James’ Park.

Given that some Newcastle fans were up in arms over the club selling Perez, it’s now clear to see that the Magpies and Ashley played a blinder by selling him for that much.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United could have their next breakout star from the academy…

Man Utd suffer blow in Declan Rice pursuit

Manchester United have suffered a potentially significant blow in their pursuit of West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice.

What’s the story?

According to the Manchester Evening News, the Red Devils have made the 22-year-old their primary engine room transfer target for next summer as manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to build a side capable of competing for the title.

However, United could have a battle on their hands to secure Rice’s services after local rivals Manchester City reportedly joined the race for his signature, according to The Sun.

The current Premier League champions are believed to be lining up a move for Rice, who is valued at £100 million by the Hammers, as a replacement for the ageing Fernandinho.

Solskjaer will be gutted

Rice has become an integral part of West Ham’s side since making his first-team debut back in 2017, scoring five goals and providing six assists in 149 appearances for the capital club.

The England international’s magnificent performances in the centre of the pitch have caught the eye of several impressed onlookers, including Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer.

“He’s still only 22, and this is what he does really well. I think he reads the game, he’s obviously got an excellent partnership with (Tomas) Soucek in the midfield,” said the former Newcastle United legend (as relayed by This is Futbol).

“He keeps it simple; he stops teams attacking, can play, can pass, breaks it up and then sets his team on the front foot. I think he’s an excellent player.”

Therefore, news that Pep Guardiola’s charges are also interested in signing Rice will surely leave Solskjaer feeling gutted.

The Norwegian tactician is known to be keen on bringing in a new defensive midfielder over the coming months, with 33-year-old Nemanja Matic no longer able to keep pace at the elite level, while Fred and Scott McTominay are better suited to a slightly more advanced role.

Rice’s arrival at Old Trafford would be in keeping with Solskjaer’s transfer policy since taking up residency in the United dugout, but it appears as though football director John Murtough will have to pull off a masterclass to snap him up from under City’s noses.

Dudu evolui bem e pode reforçar o Palmeiras contra o Atlético-GO

No meio-campo, é possível que o técnico escale Jean, Tchê Tchê e Guerra, enquanto Borja é o favorito à vaga no ataque. Edu Dracena e Zé Roberto, poupados contra o Bahia, voltam.

Um possível Palmeiras tem: Fernando Prass; Mayke (Fabiano), Mina, Edu Dracena e Zé Roberto; Jean, Tchê Tchê e Guerra; Róger Guedes, Keno e Borja. Com dez pontos, o time é o 13º colocado no Brasileirão.
