Miandad declines PCB offer

KARACHI, July 7: Former captain Javed Miandad has declined to take up a 15-day assignment at the regional academies

08-Jul-2002KARACHI, July 7: Former captain Javed Miandad has declined to take up a 15-day assignment at the regional academies. “I received a letter last week but I have conveyed that I am not free. I have pressing domestic commitments,” Javed said.Javed was `directed’ by Ramiz Raja to give batting tips to youngsters at Muridke (July 15 to 22) and Rawalpindi (July 22 to 29) for which he would be paid Rs50,000 weekly.”It is not that I think I have been offered nothing as compared to my stature. Its simple that I am not free,” Javed said. He added: “Before offering the job, the PCB should have first sought my availability.”Zaheer Abbas and Hanif Mohammad have been offered identical assignments by the PCB. Zaheer will take over the regional academy at Peshawar while Hanif will take charge at Karachi from Monday.Ironically, Englishman Geoffrey Boycott last year was hired for 15 days at 30,000 pounds sterling at 2,000 pounds sterling a day.The deal was negotiated by Ramiz Raja who now is trying to save PCB funds by getting Pakistan legends Miandad and Hanif who were far better cricketers than Boycott at a throw-away price.

Wolves confirm Sa signing

Lots of Wolves fans have been left to gush as the Midlands club confirmed the signing of Jose Sa via their official Twitter page on Thursday evening.

The Molineux faithful released an announcement video to confirm the capture of the goalkeeper, who comes in as the replacement for Rui Patricio, who has left to join AS Roma.

As per their website, Sa has signed a deal worth five years at Molineux, and technical director Scott Sellars is very impressed by the signing.

He claims that the former Olympiacos ace is in his ‘peak years’ at 28 years of age, and notes that he is ‘aggressive’ when coming for crosses.

Sa also has ‘excellent distribution’ and is a ‘pro-active’ player, and should fit nicely into the style of play set to be implemented by new manager Bruno Lage.

Vice-artilheiro no ano, Ábila quer ajudar Raposa a melhorar finalização

– O time cria muito. Tenho que colaborar com as situações de jogo e ficar na área para concluir as finalizações, que é o que mais gosto e sei fazer. Precisamos estar sempre atentos e buscar fazer os gols para ajudar o time.

Everton confirm Townsend signing

Some Everton fans have been left fuming as the Goodison Park faithful confirmed the signing of Andros Townsend on their official Twitter page.

The Merseyside club advertised the signing of the former Crystal Palace winger in an announcement video, as he was pictured wearing the new home kit.

As per their website, Townsend has signed on a two-year deal on a free transfer after his contract expired at Selhurst Park.

While he is an experienced Premier League player, having played for both Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United as well as the Eagles in the past, the signing has not impressed some Toffees supporters.

Townsend scored just one goal in 36 games in total over all competitions across the 2020/21 season (Transfermarkt), and at 30 years of age, is already past his peak.

Sri Lanka bowl over Pakistan

TANGIERS-Chasing a modest Sri Lanka total of 242, Pakistan got off to adisastrous start and never recovered

Agha Akbar17-Aug-2002TANGIERS-Chasing a modest Sri Lanka total of 242, Pakistan got off to adisastrous start and never recovered. With Shahid Afridi smitingChaminda Vaas and Pulasthi Gunaratne for three sixes, they avoided theignominy of giving the Lankans a bonus point. But with a bunny likeMohammad Sami at the other end, with only 39 needed off 38 balls, Afridicould only have hit out. That he did, but it didn’t come off. With this 39-run win, their second on the trot, the Lankans were nowsitting pretty at the top, with Sanath Jayasuriya winning his secondsuccessive Man of the Match award, in this instance for a stroke-filled 97.At the same time, Pakistan has been consigned to the bottom at thepoints table. They must beat South Africa on Sunday and then wait forthe result of the last game of this double between Sri Lanka and SouthAfrica to see where they stand.Though there was uneven bounce in the wicket, the target was notawesome. If anything Yousuf Youhana proved with a masterly knock of 80(91 balls, 8 fours, 1 six) under immense pressure, that it was possibleto first graft and then play one’s strokes. It indeed method andorganisation of the upper order which was lacking and that spelt doomfor Pakistan. They didn’t get a good start and, with the exception ofYouhana and Razzaq (70 runs for the fifth wicket stand off 84 balls),never got the partnerships going. The openers, Saeed Anwar and Imran Nazir were gone with just 18 on theboard. Pulsathi Gunaratne accounted for both, but not without some helpfrom the batsmen. Anwar clipped uppishly to Jayawardene at shortsquare-leg and Nazir, after hitting two glorious fours to cover andlong-on, playing a cross-batted stroke towards the on, missed the lineand was clean-bowled.As if that wasn’t bad enough, Inzamam-ul-Haq pulled Vaas and Jayawardenepicked up a low catch to see the entire team running towards him at deepsquare-leg to celebrate. Further catastrophe was in store for Pakistan,as Younis Khan, the in-form batsman capable of tearing any attack apart, got out off a leading edge off Upal Chandana to make it 57 for four.Youhana hung in there, fighting it out with Abdul Razzaq (25, off 48balls, 3 fours). Youhana allowed himself to settle down, as he almostalways does, before unleashing an array of dazzling strokes all roundthe park. Jayasuriya came on for just one over, and was clouted byYouhana for 15 runs: a six over long-on, then fours over at square-legand long-on to post Pakistan’s 100, and his individual 50 simultaneously. But the Lankans wrested control as Razzaq playing too far back wastrapped leg before by Muralitharan and Youhana got the bottom edge on adrive, with Sangakkara doing the rest.Akram (19, 24 balls) and Rashid (3) couldn’t make the neededcontribution. And Shahid Afridi was sent too late at No 9. He stilltried, but it was a case of too little, too late.Lankans lose momentum:
At two points in the match Sri Lanka was going strong. At both, it losta wicket through a needless run out. These breakthroughs resulted inmore wickets in quick order, and loss of momentum. And that was whydespite a highly entertaining knock of 97 off just 94 deliveries bySanath Jayasuriya, the Lankans were bowled out for 242, the lowest totalbatting first in this tournament so far.First it was Sanath Jayasuriya (97, off 94 deliveries, 12 fours, 1 six)and Marwan Atapattu (16, off 22 balls, 3 fours) who got the inningsgoing. But the latter’s run out ignited a mini-collapse, changing thecomplexion of the game.Younis, after a wayward three overs, found his rhythm and gave himselfan extended first spell. His inswinger got Kumar Sangakkara bowledthrough a wide-open gate. And next over Aravinda de Silva perishedtrying to guide him to fine leg, as Rashid Latif pouched the insideedge, after the square-leg umpire nodded in affirmative that the ballhad been taken cleanly. From a strong position of nought for 42, to 53 for three Sri Lankaninnings had really been put off the rails. And then Jayasuriya and Mahela Jayawardene, who had put the Pakistanattack to the sword in a stand of 111 off a mere 117 deliveries to notjust rehabilitate the Lankan innings, but also giving it the impetusthat promised a score far larger than they eventually got. HereJayawardene was run out, a brilliant piece of work by Rashid Latif inthe field, running to short square leg to pick up the ball and breakingthe stumps. The innings once again came unstuck as Jayasuriya toofollowed him soon after, just three runs short of what would have beenhis 13th one-day hundred.Grabbing this window of opportunity, Waqar brought back Wasim Akram, andhe delivered first ball, trapping the Lankan skipper plumb in front. Asuperlative innings of controlled aggression came to a close. The Lankans never recovered from this twin blow within the space of 11balls. Razzaq, Sami, Waqar and again Akram got amongst the wickets. There was not a single innings of substance, though Arnold (34, 51balls, 3 fours) struck two boundaries but Waqar got him caught andbowled for his third wicket on the last delivery of the penultimateover. Akram got Muralitharan with a delivery to spare to get the Lankansbowled out.

Tendulkar set to become youngest to play 100 Tests

The man many regard as the finest batsman of his generation reaches another milestone in a record-breaking career when he walks out at The AMP Oval this week

Stephen Lamb03-Sep-2002The man many regard as the finest batsman of his generation reaches another milestone in a record-breaking career when he walks out at The AMP Oval this week. But when Sachin Tendulkar embarks upon his 100th Test on Thursday he will also be the youngest man ever to achieve the feat. Without doubt it will be a special occasion for the 29-year-old.”Reaching 100 Test matches would be special for anyone because not many players have played that many. I have enjoyed and cherished every moment and it was one of my dreams to play 100 Test matches for India. That’s when you can feel you have achieved something in life and contributed to the best of your ability.”Tendulkar is conscious of the fact that India will be looking for their first series win outside the sub-continent since 1986, when England were also the opponents.”Winning is all about delivering when the situation demands and I feel we have a better balanced team to deliver now,” said Tendulkar. “Whether it is England, Australia, Bangladesh or Kenya it doesn’t matter, winning at international level is special and we want to carry on winning.”It’s not going to be easy, there are five days of cricket left and probablythe most important five days of the series. We will have to pull up our socks and play the kind of cricket we played for five days at Headingley.”It’s important, we have been trying for so many years to win a series overseas and now the time has come where we stand a chance and a fair chance, I would say.”That chance has been set up by India’s innings victory over England at Headingley last week, to which Tendulkar contributed 193.”The last Test match was very good, the ideal Test match one would hope for,” he said. “To bat first, score big runs, put the opposition in, get them out and then finish them off. The batters got runs, the bowlers took wickets and we held some good catches.”It was a complete team effort so I think that was a perfect Test match. Iwould say it was the best Test match I have played in.”Tendulkar’s 193 was his 30th Test century, taking him past another record held by the great Don Bradman.”It’s always good when the players and your countrymen are expecting something from you, life would be quite boring if no-one expected anything from you. That has helped me, although at times the expectations of me have been very high.”What I try to do is live up to my own expectations and set targets which areachievable and try and live up to that. To try and live up to other people’s expectations can be very tough and I don’t want to put pressure on myself, I want to be realistic.”Tendulkar admits that his demi-god status back home, where is face is a constant feature of advertisements, imposes restrictions on his lifestyle.”I can’t live a normal life because the game is followed back home in such abig way,” he admitted. “There are pluses and minuses obviously, it is an advantage being in this position because not many guys can be in this position in India so I want to thank all the people for helping me to be here. It is difficult, though, because I can’t do a thing a normal family man would do.”

Aston Villa: Fans react to Keinan Davis update

Stoke City want to sign Aston Villa forward Keinan Davis on loan, according to The Telegraph’s John Percy.

And a number of Villa supporters have been reacting to the reliable reporter’s post on social media.

According to Percy, The Potters have held talks over a temporary move, however, no agreement has been reached. A decision is expected in a few weeks, with Stoke hopeful of signing the 23-year-old ahead of the new season.

Davis, who still has three years remaining on his Villa Park deal, has made 85 appearances for Villa.

The forward turned out 15 times in the Premier League last season, however, only one of those appearances came as a starter.

He was used as a winger and a striker by Dean Smith during the previous campaign, but it appears as if he could be heading to Staffordshire over the coming weeks.

Villa fans react

Percy posted the Villa-related news on Twitter on Thursday evening. These Villa fans were quick to share their thoughts on a potential move, with one describing it as ‘perfect’.
