Massimo Luongo linked with Sheff Wed exit

Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Massimo Luongo could return to Australia, with Perth Glory reportedly interested in making a move for him.

The Lowdown: Luongo impresses for Owls

The 28-year-old has been an impressive performer at times for the Owls, scoring three goals in 45 appearances. and boasting impressive averages of 2.4 tackles and 1.3 interceptions per game in the Championship last season.

Luongo has lacked consistency though and is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury, meaning he is set to miss a chunk of Wednesday’s League One campaign.

The Latest: Midfielder linked with exit

According to The Sheffield Star, Darren Moore could actually lose his midfielder for good, with Perth eyeing up a permanent move for him.

The A-League side are thought to be keen on bringing Luongo back to his homeland, with over a month of the Australian transfer window still remaining.

Luongo’s current Owls deal expires next summer, leaving his future up in the air.

The Verdict: Big potential loss?

Luongo would be a big loss if he moved on this summer, even though his injury problems have held him back at times at Hillsborough.

The tenacity and energy he provides in midfield could be too good for some League One opponents – he has won 43 caps for Australia, which speaks volumes – and he is an ideal foil for the more attack-minded Barry Bannan.

The hope may be that Luongo stays put at Wednesday and ends up signing a new contract, but cashing in now is a more viable option than losing him for free next year.

In other news, some Sheff Wed fans have been hailing an Owls player’s brilliance on international duty. Read more here.

Whom will Tendulkar replace?

Nearly nine months out of the one-day game, and into his 20th year of international cricket, the Sachin Tendulkar caravan just rumbles on and, on Sunday, it will give England something different to think about as they seek to stay alive in this seven-match series. After playing a significant role inIndia’s 2-0 Test series win over Australia, Tendulkar opted for some rest, but Bangalore’s Chinnaswamy Stadium will see his return to non-IPL coloured clothes.A man with 42 centuries and 16,361 runs, and who redefined the opener’s role in limited-overs cricket, should never have to prove anything but it’ll be interesting to see how India re-jig their batting order to accommodate him. Great one-day batsmen have been either relentless accumulators or others impetuous destroyers. Tendulkar has combined both qualities to devastating effect ever since that Auckland morning when India decided to take a punt on him at the top of the order.Mahendra Singh Dhoni gave every indication on Saturday afternoon that Tendulkar will open with Virender Sehwag, with Gautam Gambhir moving down to the No.3 slot that he made his own during the CB Series in Australia earlier this year.”I’d prefer it if Sachin opens with Sehwag. We have tried that and you can say that is an option,” said Dhoni. “Yes, tampering with a successful line-up is something you have to thinktwice before doing, but you also have to see the quality of the player coming in.”Sachin needed a bit of rest and he is the person who knows his body the best. We want him to play as long as possible and whenever he is available he should play. He has played his part in Indian cricket and it’s up to the emerging players to get the most out of him. The more he plays, the more it benefits the youngsters.”While some murmurs will be raised about the wisdom behind breaking up a pair – Sehwag and Gambhir – that has had so much success in recent times in both forms of the game, there’s no denying that Tendulkar and Sehwag have quite a history. In 83 games together, they havecombined for 10 century partnerships and 11 in excess of 50 while averaging 37.93. The only reason the duo didn’t attract more attention was because Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly were such an institution – 26 three-figure partnerships in 176 games.Where does this leave a squad that’s won three games on the bounce though? Most captains are loathe to change a winning formula, except for reasons of fatigue, and it’ll be illuminating to see whether Dhoni accommodates both Tendulkar and Irfan Pathan – one of the subjects of an alleged selection skirmish after the Kanpur game – in the XI. It’s hard to see how Pathan can come in unless Zaheer Khan is given a rest after his recent labours. Munaf Patel has just struck a nice rhythm after being an onlooker for the Australia Tests, and Ishant Sharma will be eying some overs in the middle with a Test series to come next month.Whose place does Tendulkar take though? Gambhir is comfortable batting anywhere in the top three, while Tendulkar’s preference for opening has been well-documented. The man almost certain to miss out is Rohit Sharma, whose recent form has been indifferent at best. In 14 games dating back to the Asia Cup, Rohit averages 20.90, with just one half-century. Suresh Raina has averaged 44.38 in the same period and played some crucial knocks. His effervescence in the field – not that Rohit is a slouch – should also help him keep his place. The last time Tendulkar and Sehwag opened together, at Sydney against Australia, they aggregated 19. Sehwag took no further in that series [he had made just 81 from five innings] while Tendulkar finished it in spectacular fashion, with innings of 117 not out and 92 sealing a famous Indian triumph. Robin Uthappa, who will no doubt be watching keenly on Sunday, opened with him then, as India decided not to go for a left-right combination. The behind-the-scenes shenanigans, described as “disgusting” by Dhoni, are a distraction this India team could have done without. There certainly won’t be any complacency on England’s part though Kevin Pietersen and his bowlers won’t be overly dismayed to see Tendulkar. Though Andy Caddick and a couple of others might have the odd nightmare about bowlingto him, he hasn’t been as prolific against England as he has against others. Though he averages 42.46 over 34 games, only one of those 42 centuries has come against them.Bangalore hasn’t been a happy hunting ground of late either, with his last two outings fetching 2 and a blob. Provided the rain stays away, all that could just be ancient history for a man who has spent his entire career breaking new ground.

Dudu evolui bem e pode reforçar o Palmeiras contra o Atlético-GO

No meio-campo, é possível que o técnico escale Jean, Tchê Tchê e Guerra, enquanto Borja é o favorito à vaga no ataque. Edu Dracena e Zé Roberto, poupados contra o Bahia, voltam.

Um possível Palmeiras tem: Fernando Prass; Mayke (Fabiano), Mina, Edu Dracena e Zé Roberto; Jean, Tchê Tchê e Guerra; Róger Guedes, Keno e Borja. Com dez pontos, o time é o 13º colocado no Brasileirão.

Ferley returns to Kent

Left-arm spinner Rob Ferley has returned to Kent after he decided to leave Nottinghamshire after the 2008 season, while Robert Key has been reappointed captain for 2009

Cricinfo staff26-Nov-2008Left-arm spinner Rob Ferley has returned to Kent after he decided to leave Nottinghamshire after the 2008 season, while Robert Key has been reappointed captain for 2009.Ferley previously had a four-year spell with Kent from 2003 and has returned after feeling his chances of a first-team place at Nottinghamshire had diminished due to the presence of Graeme Swann and Samit Patel.”It is also great news that Rob has decided to return to Kent,” chairman of cricket, Graham Johnson, said. “The playing programme in 2009 and 2010 is in transition and spinners have a key part to play. Rob is hungry to continue the impact he has had in long and short forms of one-day cricket and to make the breakthrough in four-day cricket.”The extension of Key’s captaincy reign is a vote of confidence despite Kent’s relegation in the Championship and a series of near-misses in one-day cricket last season.”His experience of leading teams has been recognised by his county peer group and he is currently in India with the England Performance Squad,” Johnson said. “He continues to demonstrate fine leadership qualities in all forms of cricket and I know he is determined to achieve the success which so narrowly eluded the Kent team last summer.”His performances as captain and as a batsman warrant recognition at international level where he has had success in the past.”

Mike Ashley had a NUFC masterclass with Perez

While Mike Ashley certainly hasn’t done much good at Newcastle United – the numerous fan protests are a testament to that – the one thing he did get spot-on, was his sale of Ayoze Perez.

Having signed him from Tenerife for just £1.5m, there’s no questioning that Newcastle got their money’s worth from Perez.

The Spaniard arrived as a little-known youngster back in the summer of 2014, but then Magpies boss Alan Pardew wasn’t shy in waxing lyrical about his latest recruit.

He said: “We’re delighted to confirm our first signing of the summer and very pleased to have Ayoze at Newcastle United, as a number of other clubs were chasing his signature too.

“He had a terrific season in Spain last year and is a player who we hope to develop further on Tyneside. He’s only 20 but has a very good eye for goal and that’s a great asset for any young player to have.”

Perez ended up playing 195 times for the club, scoring 48 goals and providing a further 17 assists across all competitions. He made his biggest contribution for the club during Rafa Benitez’s stint as manager, making over 100 appearances for his fellow Spaniard.

The former Newcastle boss even said: “Ayoze is a player that is keen to learn and I am telling him all the time it is about staying consistent. He has given us a lot of things. But the main thing for me is he knows that he can improve and he is keen to learn.”

In the end, following Benitez’s departure from the club, Perez also followed suit. The Magpies got some big-money for the forward though, collecting a reported £30m from fellow Premier League side Leicester, thus making them an impressive £28.5m profit.

And since his move to the Foxes, the 28-year-old hasn’t shown much to justify the price tag, playing 79 times and scoring just 11 goals, struggling to break into the side on a consistent basis – not surprising when you consider he has Jamie Vardy in front of him.

In fact, according to CIES, his market value now just stands at a measly £6m – quite the significant drop-off from what the Foxes paid for him to bring him in from St James’ Park.

Given that some Newcastle fans were up in arms over the club selling Perez, it’s now clear to see that the Magpies and Ashley played a blinder by selling him for that much.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United could have their next breakout star from the academy…

Man Utd suffer blow in Declan Rice pursuit

Manchester United have suffered a potentially significant blow in their pursuit of West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice.

What’s the story?

According to the Manchester Evening News, the Red Devils have made the 22-year-old their primary engine room transfer target for next summer as manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to build a side capable of competing for the title.

However, United could have a battle on their hands to secure Rice’s services after local rivals Manchester City reportedly joined the race for his signature, according to The Sun.

The current Premier League champions are believed to be lining up a move for Rice, who is valued at £100 million by the Hammers, as a replacement for the ageing Fernandinho.

Solskjaer will be gutted

Rice has become an integral part of West Ham’s side since making his first-team debut back in 2017, scoring five goals and providing six assists in 149 appearances for the capital club.

The England international’s magnificent performances in the centre of the pitch have caught the eye of several impressed onlookers, including Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer.

“He’s still only 22, and this is what he does really well. I think he reads the game, he’s obviously got an excellent partnership with (Tomas) Soucek in the midfield,” said the former Newcastle United legend (as relayed by This is Futbol).

“He keeps it simple; he stops teams attacking, can play, can pass, breaks it up and then sets his team on the front foot. I think he’s an excellent player.”

Therefore, news that Pep Guardiola’s charges are also interested in signing Rice will surely leave Solskjaer feeling gutted.

The Norwegian tactician is known to be keen on bringing in a new defensive midfielder over the coming months, with 33-year-old Nemanja Matic no longer able to keep pace at the elite level, while Fred and Scott McTominay are better suited to a slightly more advanced role.

Rice’s arrival at Old Trafford would be in keeping with Solskjaer’s transfer policy since taking up residency in the United dugout, but it appears as though football director John Murtough will have to pull off a masterclass to snap him up from under City’s noses.

And, in other news…Reliable journalist provided exciting Man Utd update, fans will be absolutely buzzing

Daniel Vettori, the New Zealand captain, has welcomed the news of India possibly playing an extra Test on their tour to his country. “I’m pretty excited,” Vettori said. “I think most players have been crying out for that third Test-match style series.”A gap has opened in India’s international calendar after their tour of Pakistan was called off and the BCCI has sent a request to New Zealand Cricket to add another match to the two-Test series.New Zealand’s coach Andy Moles has already given his thumbs-up for the idea.India will make their way to New Zealand in March on the back of two series wins – at home – against Australia and England and Vettori said it would be exciting to compete against “one of the best teams in the world”.”I think everyone would love to make it happen. I’m not sure if logistically it can happen but if it’s do-able, I’d love to see it happen.”After their ODI series against West Indies concludes on January 13, New Zealand head to Australia for five one-dayers in February. The series against India starts on March 6 with a Twenty20, followed by five ODIs and two Tests, the second of which ends on April 7. With the Indian Premier League scheduled to start on April 10, the only way to fit in an extra Test is to begin the tour earlier.
