Gayle is certainly going about this match in his own way, from the team selection to tactics in the field and then his batting display. Yesterday evening he threw caution to the wind and attacked England, but on the third day he was far more circumspect as he settled down for a major innings. However, his century turned from a moment of joy into a moment of anguish, as after sprinting for a tight single that nearly caused his run out, he stayed on the ground in pain and could barely stand up to celebrate the milestone. A few moments later he hobbled off with a torn hamstring with his job far from complete.Premature celebration
It sounds like one of those spam emails that fill your inbox, but this refers to Amjad thinking he’d removed Shivnarine Chanderpaul. In an interview with the , Kevin Pietersen spoke about how he is finding fielding the most difficult task now he isn’t captain. “When I go out and stand in the field and I’m not telling anyone where to go and not having to think. I’m just standing there going ‘Phewwww! When’s lunch?’,” he said. To fill his time today he got into the rhythm of the catchy beats coming out of the Trini Posse Stand, starting a little jig in the outfield at the start of the final session much to appreciation of the fans.

What’s the word?

During an interview with West Ham Zone this week, the former Hammers striker – who enjoyed two spells in east London – claimed the club were prepared to pay “big bucks” to tie him down for the long-term.

“Listen, from what I’m hearing the club want to keep him and they’re willing to pay big bucks.

“Now, I don’t know if he’s wanting to go somewhere. [But] I think this team [and] this squad of players, could be challenging for the Champions League for the next two or three years. I think they’ve got a decent squad, keeping everyone fit. They’ll buy more players in.

“From what I’m hearing, the owners are willing to give Declan pretty much on a par with everyone else in England, so that’s a good thing.”

Encouraging news

The 22-year-old midfielder has been continually linked with a move away in recent transfer windows, with the likes of Chelsea and both Manchester giants mooted with interest.

All three of these teams made a final of last season’s European competitions. The Blues defeating City in the Champions League, whilst United were beaten by Unai Emery’s Villarreal in the Europa League.

They can clearly offer Rice a better chance of achieving silverware sooner than West Ham can, so it would be no surprise to see him keen to join any of these teams.

During the summer, the £63m-rated star was said to have rejected fresh contract advances from the Irons’ hierarchy and according to the ever-reliable ExWHUemployee, this was because his salary was not in line with some of the club’s highest-earners, such as the rarely-seen Andriy Yarmolenko, who is thought to earn a whopping £115k-per–week in east London.

However, offering the England international a new deal that would see him match similar quality players in his position is certainly a positive step in the right direction, especially after Ex’s revelation.

Rice is believed to be on just £60k-per-week at the London Stadium, which is poor considering he has now amassed 26 caps for the Three Lions since his debut in March 2019, whilst he continues to be a major influence for West Ham under David Moyes.

Last season, he ranked amongst the Hammers’ four best performers and he has continued that form into the new campaign, where he has already registered two assists in seven starts and averaged a squad-high two interceptions per game, via WhoScored.

He’s also managing the best passing accuracy in the team (92.7%), by quite some margin, too.

If the club are indeed prepared to pay him what he wants and deserves, then it should leave much of the Irons faithful absolutely buzzing as there is the intention to put right their previous offers.

Whether he wants to stay or go remains to be seen, though given he is under contract until 2024, he’s likely to remain for at least the next season or so.

Se algum título virá, no entanto, é preciso esperar. Mas o Grêmio de hoje não dá sinais de que terá uma queda de rendimento capaz de fazer o torcedor se preocupar.

They had boycotted the previous year’s IPL for the same reason.The News Media Coalition, the umbrella body that comprises global news and photograph agencies Reuters, AP, AFP and Getty Images, has failed to get the tournament’s organisers to amend the conditions.Lalit Modi, the IPL chairman, refused to change rules which barred the distribution of photographs and news to cricket-specific websites. The IPL has an exclusive agreement to supply news and photos about the Twenty20 tournament to one website.”We can’t allow the sponsor of a newsworthy event to specify where news gets distributed,” Dave Tomlin, the AP’s associate general counsel, said. “This is a case in which a sports association is now in the information business too and is trying to carve out an exclusive segment of the news market as its own to exploit. It’s wrong.”Last year, besides agencies, news channels in India had also threatened a boycott over the constraints laid down by the IPL before agreeing to cover it after the tournament’s organisers acceded to their main demands.

Anthony Martial is one of four Manchester United players that Newcastle United could look to sign, according to a report from The Daily Mirror. 

The lowdown

The 25-year-old has struggled for form of late, with just five Premier League goals since the start of the 2020/21 season.

His contract at Old Trafford runs until June 2024, but the Red Devils have the option to extend it for a further year. His estimated transfer value has fallen to £31.5m, its lowest point since the summer of 2017 (via Transfermarkt).

The latest

As per The Daily Mirror, Newcastle are tipped to ‘flex their financial muscles’ when the mid-season transfer window rolls around as they look to ward off any relegation concerns.

Manchester United owners, the Glazer family, could come under ‘pressure’ from the Tyneside club amid interest in Martial, Eric Bailly, Donny van de Beek and Jesse Lingard. Of that group, the former is said to be the likeliest to leave Old Trafford in the near future.

Red Devils co-owner Joel Glazer is apparently a keen admirer of the Frenchman and has blocked his exit in the past, but his resolve could be tested at the turn of the year when Newcastle dip into their ‘war chest’.

The verdict

Would Martial be the smartest signing of the four? It’s hard to say when we don’t know who’ll be in charge at Newcastle and what system they might want to play.

We do know that he’s a quality player on top form, as he demonstrated in 2019/20 when he scored 23 goals and provided 12 assists in all competitions, but his alarming drop-off since then makes the move a risk. Meanwhile, Bailly could improve Newcastle’s defence but his injury record is a real concern.

Van de Beek and Lingard showed their class at Ajax and West Ham respectively but won’t get the opportunity do so on a consistent basis at Old Trafford, so they could be clever acquisitions for the Magpies.

In other news, two managerial candidates have emerged for Newcastle.

Pete Graves has provided an update on England international Jesse Lingard, relating to Newcastle’s pursuit of his services.

What’s the talk?

According to the Sky Sports journalist, the Manchester United man’s agents were in attendance for the Magpies’ 3-2 defeat to Tottenham as they are keeping a close eye on developments at the club.

He wrote: “I understand Lingard’s representatives were at St James’s Park yesterday keeping an eye on developments at #nufc.”

Lingard has been linked with a potential switch to St. James’ Park following PIF’s takeover of the club, with the January window just over two months away.

Fans will be buzzing

Newcastle fans will surely be left buzzing by this update from Graves as it suggests that there is potential interest from Lingard’s side to get a deal done. The initial Telegraph report stated that it was unclear whether or not the midfielder would be keen on the switch, but this latest development indicates that he is actively considering it by sending the relevant people to St. James’ Park.

The supporters will be delighted by that because Lingard is a proven Premier League performer who could come in and improve the team. He has shown throughout his career that he can score and assist goals, with 29 goals and 17 assists in 153 matches at Premier League level – mainly playing for United.

Last season, Lingard scored nine goals and provided five assists in 16 games on loan to West Ham in the top-flight, which means that he has a recent track record of performing to a high level.

United icon Andy Cole also hailed Lingard’s infectious nature earlier this year, hailing the impact he has on others. He said:

“I think Jesse has come back with that bit between his teeth. He has got the goal, but it is not just about the goal – it is his work rate as well.

“I think his work rate can become infectious. He is putting himself about, getting in the right areas – and getting himself a goal as well.”

Therefore, he could provide quality in the final third whilst also working hard off the ball to harass the opposition and drive his teammates on. This is why Newcastle fans will be delighted that he appears to be exploring the possibility of a transfer to Tyneside ahead of the January window.
