Spurs in pole position for Dejan Kulusevski

As per Tuttosport, via Sport Witness, there has been another update on Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of Juventus attacker Dejan Kulusevski.

The Lowdown: Paratici and Conte enter race…

Recent reports from Italy claimed that the Sweden international has been added to Spurs’ ever-growing list of Serie A targets. Indeed, as explained by TUTTOmercatoWEB, both Conte and Paratici admire the player a lot and see him as a gem with enormous potential – making Spurs a ‘credible candidate’ for his signature.

Taking to Twitter recently, reporter Daniele Longo also claimed that contacts are ‘in progress’ between Juve and Spurs. In another promising claim, the paper edition of Tuttosport said that Tottenham are very much in contention.

The Latest: Spurs ‘in first place’…

As per their sources, via Sport Witness, Tottenham are ‘in first place’ as they enter the race to sign Kulusevski amid his lack of game-time in Turin. They claimed that both Conte and Paratici adore the 21-year-old, and while they face stiff competition, it is believed that Spurs are the favourites in the transfer race as things stand.

It won’t be cheap to bring him to north London, though, as the Bianconeri apparently value Kulusevski at around €40m (£34.1m).

The Verdict: Gamble?

Despite primarily playing on the wing, Juventus’ talented ace can actually be utilised in the number 8 and number 10 roles according to a detailed scout report by Outside of the Boot. This could make him a far more viable transfer target for Spurs given they have still yet to replace the influence of former star Christian Eriksen.

Lauded as ‘incredible’ by Portuguese footballing veteran Bruno Alves, Kulusevski may well come as an outside contender to finally fill the void left by Eriksen’s departure.

Over his best Italian top flight season back in 2019/20 for Parma, the maestro averaged a very impressive 2.2 key passes and 2.1 completed dribbles per 90 – similar numbers to what the Danish playmaker managed during his best years in north London (WhoScored).

However, his relative inexperience at the top level, having just emerged over the past two seasons, could count against him in that regard, and £34.1m is a large gamble to bet on.

Pakistan fast bowler Sohail Tanvir will not be playing for Surrey this season after the deal fell through due to visa problems. “I’m very disappointed as the opportunity at Surrey would have been a great chance to further develop my game and to get some match practice ahead of the Champions Trophy trial matches,” Tanvir, 24, told .Tanvir, who was dropped for the ongoing series in Sri Lanka after a poor World Twenty20, had said he was spending his time out of the side “overcoming his problems” and was set for a stint with the county. He has been included in Pakistan’s Champions Trophy probables squad of 29 but will face tough competition in the fast bowling department from youngsters like Mohammad Aamer, Mohammad Talha and Wahab Riaz to make the cut. Southampton predicted starting XI v Norwich

Just over two weeks on from their 1-0 win over Aston Villa which led to Dean Smith losing his job at the Midlands club, Southampton come up against the 50-year-old once again for his first game in charge of Norwich City this afternoon.

Speaking ahead of the match at Carrow Road, Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl revealed that defender Jack Stephens is the only player unavailable for selection as a result of the serious knee injury he sustained earlier in the campaign.

With this in mind, here’s how we think Southampton will line up against Norwich, with two changes from the starting XI from the win over Villa 15 days ago.

In goal, considering that he’s played in every league game so far this season, it would be safe to assume that Hasenhuttl will stick with Alex McCarthy.

In defence, with Valentino Livramento being declared fit after dropping out of England’s under-21 squad last week through injury, we can see him starting at right-back, with Kyle Walker-Peters occupying the left-back position.

For the centre-back pairing, we think Hasenhuttl will stick with Mohamed Salisu but bring Lyanco in for Jan Bednarek after the Brazilian impressed during the last 34 minutes of the game against Villa. On that night, he blocked two shots and made one tackle, one interception and one clearance whilst winning three of his four duels, ultimately earning himself an overall match rating of 7/10 from SofaScore.

In midfield, we can see Hasenhuttl sticking with the central duo of Oriol Romeu and James Ward-Prowse, who has recovered from a bug which forced him out of international duty for England.

On the wings, with Nathan Redmond being available for selection after missing the Villa game as a result of a positive virus test, we think he will go straight back into the team. Stuart Armstrong, who is currently earning a wage of £50k-per-week according to Spotrac, drops to the substitutes’ bench after an ineffective display against Villa as Mohamed Elyounoussi returns to the right-hand side.

Up top, even though Armando Broja has apparently been declared fit enough to play, we can see Hasenhuttl sticking with the duo of Adam Armstrong and Che Adams to see if they can get Smith’s reign at Norwich off to a bad start and pick up another win for the Saints.

An alarming day for England

Having arrived into Leeds hopeful of a series-clinching victory, England were left to lament a dramatic first day in which form, injury and even faulty fire-detection equipment conspired against them

A 5am fire alarm might well have been the highlight of England’s day. Having arrived into Leeds hopeful of a series-clinching victory, England were left to lament a dramatic first day in which form, injury and even faulty fire-detection equipment conspired against them.By far the most immediate concern for England surrounds the fitness of their fast bowlers. James Anderson appeared in significant discomfort after setting off for a sharp single during the hosts’ batting innings, stretching and flexing his right leg for the remainder of his brief tenure at the crease. He would later bowl without the menace of his second day spell at Edgbaston, and left the field on several occasions to receive treatment.Anderson’s already astronomical importance to the England attack escalated further prior to play upon confirmation that Andrew Flintoff would play no part in the fourth Test. Flintoff looked severely restricted by his injured right knee during Thursday’s training session, and was eventually replaced by Steve Harmison – a move that stabilised England’s bowling unit, but substantially eroded the depth of their batting line-up.According to an ECB release, Flintoff remains eager to play in the fifth Test at The Oval from August 20, but will not receive anymore pain-killing injections to assist him. There remains the possibility that the recently-concluded Test match at Edgbaston was Flintoff’s last, but with almost a fortnight to rest, England are optimistic their enigmatic all-rounder will be afforded a final hurrah in south London.Flintoff’s withdrawal was not England’s only drama prior to play. Matt Prior was struck down with back spasms while playing football in the warm-ups and was immediately taken from the field for treatment. England requested Australia that the coin toss be delayed for ten minutes while medical staff decided whether a replacement wicketkeeper was required. In the end, Prior was given the all-clear and, while appearing stiff at the crease, still managed to post an innings-high total of 37 not out.”I have been on so many drugs today that I don’t think I’ll remember much of (the innings) tomorrow,” Prior said. “It was really touch and go … and I have to thank the Australians. That extra ten minutes was huge in allowing me to have the injection and receive treatment from the physio.”I knew that if I didn’t play that I’d be right as rain toimorrow and absolutely gutted that I didn’t go through a bit of stress today. It’s stiff. When you have a back spasm all the muscles are seizing up and the joints can tighten up. Ultimately your body is telling you to stop moving. You’ve got to try and get it going again, you’ve got to try and move it. Obviously I’ve had a lot of physio, a lot of massage, the normal anti-inflammatories and pain-killers. And I had an injection in my butt this morning.”The hosts’ mood was tested early on Friday when players and support staff were evacuated from the Radisson SAS Hotel at around 4.50am due to a fire alarm. All were forced to stand in the rain for 20 minutes while fire crews investigated the source of the alarm.”It’s not ideal,” Prior said. “I think anyone would be slightly miffed at 5am standing in the rain with no shoes on. It’s not an excuse. All it was was a few grumpy people moaning they’ve been woken up at five.”

Shekawat and Sagar shine for Brigadiers

A round-up of the tenth day of the KPL Cup

Cricinfo staff18-Sep-2009Nishant Shekawat’s 81 and Dilp Sagar’s five-wicket haul set up Bangalore Brigadiers’ (Urban) 26-run win over Mysore Maharaajas at the Gangothri Glades Ground. The opener Shekawat smashed seven fours and four sixes in his 49-ball knock to push his team to 140 in a shortened match. Robin Uthappa chipped in with 26 and the pair put together an attacking stand of 59 in 5.3 overs for the second wicket to lead their team to a formidable score in 14 overs. The Maharaajas’ chase got off to a poor start when they lost three wickets in an over to Sagar. He got the key wickets of KB Pawan and captain C Raghu to leave them at 26 for 3. Chethan William top scored with 36, but after he departed in the tenth over, the lower order crumbled to the left-arm spin of Narayanan Prasad, who took 4 for 14.The Brigadiers are tied on eight points at the top of the league with Bangalore Provident, who are ahead on net-run rate.An all-round performance from Stuart Binny helped Bijapur Bulls to an easy eight-wicket win over Mangalore United in Mysore. Binny was a tad expensive – conceding 10 an over – but he still took two wickets, including that of the Mangalore top scorer Rongsen Jonathan for 73. He then scored an unbeaten 48 off 31 balls to help chase down 179, with 16 balls to spare. Jonathan and Nikhil Haldipur (37) constructed the best stand of the Mangalore innings – 84 for the third wicket – to challenge Bijapur in the chase. But Mithun Beerala (61) and Gaurav Dhiman ensured an easy passage to the target with an opening stand of 93. Both made half-centuries – Dhiman’s was more ballistic as he smashed seven fours and three sixes in his 57, which came off 24 balls. They were separated in the seventh over, which gave Binny enough time to finish off the formalities with ease.

Newcastle eyeing Oleksandr Zinchenko

An update has emerged regarding Newcastle United’s reported transfer interest in Manchester City’s Oleksandr Zinchenko.

What’s the talk?

According to The Northern Echo, the Magpies could make an ‘ambitious’ swoop for the Ukraine international in the January transfer window.

The report claims that the Toon Army could move for Zinchenko if he continues to play a supporting role at the Etihad Stadium in the coming weeks.

Time to axe Ritchie

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe must secure a deal to sign the left-back as it could allow him to axe Matt Ritchie from the starting XI.

The Scottish full-back has been in dire form since the start of last season, and the prospective signing of Zinchenko could leave him on the bench or playing further up the field. He has averaged a poor WhoScored rating of 6.60 in the Premier League this season, slightly down from the 6.64 he managed in the 2020/21 campaign, showing that he has been unable to consistently turn in impressive performances in the top flight.

Meanwhile, Zinchenko averaged a WhoScored rating of 6.84 in 20 Premier League appearances for Man City last season, with his score weighed down slightly by five of those games coming as a substitute. At the European Championship in the summer, he averaged a superb score of 6.98 in five matches as he made four tackles and interceptions per game in helping Ukraine to the quarter-finals.

City boss Pep Guardiola previously hailed the 24-year-old’s ‘exceptional’ quality and pointed out the standard of player he is able to handle as a defender.

The Spaniard said: “He is always focused, always concentrated. As a left-back he fights against [Mohamed] Salah, [Marcus] Rashford, [Angel] Di Maria – the toughest opponents and he doesn’t make mistakes. His quality with the ball is exceptional, we know it…”

This shows that the £25.2m-rated beast has the ability to perform consistently at the top level to a good standard, in comparison to Ritchie’s sub-par displays for the Magpies over the last 18 months. Therefore, signing Zinchenko could allow Howe to axe the Scot from the starting XI and potentially leave him on the bench in a reserve role, with the Ukrainian hopefully becoming a regular in the team.

It is now down to PIF and Howe to make sure that they can convince him to make the switch to Tyneside. He has not started a single league match for City this season and the prospect of playing week in, week out could potentially be tempting for the 24-year-old.
