Kevin Pietersen has wished his Hampshire colleagues the best of luck for their Friends Provident t20 semi-final against Essex on Saturday, after the county confirmed he won’t be selected for the showpiece finals day at the Rose Bowl, despite being one of four England players made available for county duty by the England coach Andy Flower. In a statement, Hampshire confirmed that the club’s policy regarding Pietersen remains the same as when they declined to select him for a CB40 match against Kent last month, a move that stemmed from his comments earlier in the season, in which he confirmed he’d be leaving Hampshire when his contract expires at the end of the summer. He said the commute from his home in Chelsea made it impractical for him to continue at The Rose Bowl and Middlesex are currently the favourites to gain his signature.”The decision remains consistent with the club’s policy to stand by the players who have performed well for them in limited-overs cricket so far this season,” read a statement from the county.”Hampshire would like to re-iterate that this is, by no means, a reflection on Kevin Pietersen as a player or as an individual. However, since Kevin has already made it clear that he intends to play cricket elsewhere next season, the club believes the teams’ best interests are best served by selecting those who have performed so well so far this season, many of whom are aspiring England players, themselves.”Pietersen responded in a post on his Twitter page, in which he played down any perceived falling-out. “I fully understand Hampshire’s position in not selecting me for finals day,” he wrote. “I wish them all the best on the day. I will be watching the lads!”Although Pietersen made a significant contribution to England’s nine-wicket victory against Pakistan at Edgbaston his 80 was a horribly scratchy innings which included three clear-cut dropped chances. Another innings before the third Test at The Oval, and in a format that would allow Pietersen to express himself, may have been welcome but Hampshire are sticking to the batting line-up that has impressed in the tournament to date, with the likes of Michael Lumb, Michael Carberry, Neil McKenzie and James Vince all making contributions.”We are very pleased to be involved in Finals Day, particularly at The Rose Bowl,” said Hampshire’s chairman, Rod Bransgrove. “The players who have got the Royals to this point have made their county and everyone associated with the club very proud. We would, therefore, like to stand by them.”We wish Kevin and England all the very best for the future and all their forthcoming internationals. We look forward to welcoming them back to The Rose Bowl for the England v Pakistan NatWest One-Day International at The Rose Bowl on September 22.”Hampshire’s opponents in the semi-final, Essex, will have Alastair Cook available after he was also made available but that also poses some interesting selection questions. Cook would open the batting, but the combination of Mark Pettini and Ravi Bopara have proved successful in his absence and Cook’s current form is woeful after a tough time against Pakistan. However, Nottinghamshire are unlikely to have any issues including Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann in their starting line-up against Somerset for the other semi-final. Swann was named Man-of-the-Match in the second Test against Pakistan after a career-best 6 for 65 in the second innings and Broad also bagged six wickets in the game, although lost half his match fee after hurling the ball at Zulqarnain Haider on the third day.”We will select the best players available to us and Stuart and Graeme will add significant strength to our team,” said director of cricket Mick Newell. “We’ve used a lot of players to get to finals day and everyone has made a good contribution.”I’ll talk to the players who will have to make way for Stuart and Graeme but everyone understands that we will pick the team that will give us the best possible chance of winning the match and progressing to the final.”

Celtic: Ange was right to reject Roberts

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou was right to reject the chance to re-sign Patrick Roberts for the Hoops.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to Peter Grant, with the former Celtic midfielder stating his belief in a recent interview with GO Radio (via Football Scotland) that, following a report which claimed that the 56-year-old turned down the opportunity to bring the winger back to Parkhead last summer, Postecoglou made the right call on the 25-year-old, as Liel Abada offers more than the former Manchester City forward.

Concerning Roberts, Grant said: “I had Pat as a young man at Fulham. He was a terrific young player. There are things in his game that I feel he’s not improved enough and I can see why Ange probably wouldn’t take him back – because it’s more about the team ethic at this moment in time.

“Young Abada’s gone in and done terrifically well. He’s more productive in terms of goals and he’s probably looked at that. It’s easy to say somebody’s got the talent, and Pat’s no doubt got that. I think it was £10m we sold him to Manchester City for.

“But the thing for us was that Pat needed to go out and play. Was he going to play at Manchester City? No, I don’t think that was going to be the case but the loan process was going to work fantastically well for him. He’s a Celtic-type of player but do they need him at this time? I think Ange has made the right call to be perfectly honest.”

Ange hit the jackpot on Roberts

As Grant suggests, Postecoglou’s decision to sanction the £3.4m signing of Abada ahead of making a move for Roberts very much looks to be a call which saw the Cektuc manager hit the jackpot, as the two players’ careers could not be heading in more contrasting directions.

Indeed, after being rejected by the Hoops, the £1.35m-rated Roberts was shipped out on loan to Ligue 1 side Troyes, where he made just two appearances before returning to Manchester City in January.

Subsequently, the 25-year-old was given the green light to join English League One side Sunderland on a free transfer – a fry cry from his £11m move to City back in 2015. At the Stadium of Light, the former England under-20 international, who was previously nicknamed the “mini Messi”, has struggled once again, so far having made nine appearances for the Black Cats and scored just one goal.

In contrast, since Abada’s move to Parkhead last summer, the £4.05m-rated sensation has scored 14 goals and registered 11 assists over his 48 appearances in all competitions. That form has already seen the Israel under-21 international linked with a summer switch to Crystal Palace.

As such, it is clear to see that Postecoglou made the right call on both Roberts and Abada, as it seems as if the former may well be a player who fails to ever go on to reach his potential.

Graças a Deus pude ajudar o time – afirmou Jean Mota.

Quem ganha é o Santos – afirmou Jair Ventura.

Leicestershire have been plunged into a new crisis with the news that Tim Boon, their senior coach, is to leave the club

Leicestershire have been plunged into a new crisis after it was confirmed that Tim Boon, the head coach, will leave the club at the end of the seasonESPNcricinfo understands that Boon will shortly be appointed as England U19 coach. It will mean that Leicestershire have lost their chief executive (David Smith), their chairman of cricket (Paul Haywood) and now their senior coach within a matter of weeks. All three are known to have expressed grave reservations over the continuing involvement of Neil Davidson as chairman of the club. His position had seemed untenable for some weeks. He was recently one of the signatories of a letter – purporting to be from the entire playing and coaching staff at Grace Road – asking for Davidson to resign or for him to be removed by the Leicestershire CCC board. Boon’s position was subsequently described as “unsustainable” by Davidson. The news will come as a blow to Leicestershire’s coterie of talented young players, however. Boon has an excellent reputation of developing emerging talent and has been credited for his role in the emergence of James Taylor, Nathan Buck and Josh Cobb.Matthew Hoggard, the Leicestershire captain who was the co-signatory of the letter calling for Davidson’s removal, may also feel he has lost a key ally.Boon’s departure will increase the pressure on Davidson, however. A group of disaffected Leicestershire members have already called for a Special General Meeting to discuss the events leading to the departure of Smith as chief executive and to call a vote of no confidence in the board. Their concerns will only have been heightened by news of Boon’s departure.Boon has previously coached England at U17 and U19 level and was the England assistant coach under Duncan Fletcher. He became senior coach at Grace Road at the start of 2006.

Sky Sports drop Ginter to West Ham claim

As per Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas, some transfer news has come out of West Ham United, and it involves Borussia Monchengladbach star Matthias Ginter.

The Lowdown: Newman and Moyes face big summer…

Hammers officials, according to club insider Claret & Hugh, are soon set for a crunch meeting to determine the amount of money which will be allocated to both David Moyes and head of recruitment Rob Newman’s transfer kitty.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-newest-updates/” title=”West Ham newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Depending on the outcome of these financial discussions, Moyes and Newman could be set for a big window, but a lot could also come down to West Ham’s run in the Europa League or if they qualify for Europe next season.

The free agent market, as a result, could be a fruitful source for talent to bolster West Ham’s squad at zero cost.

Sharing news, Sky journalist Thomas has now lifted the lid on a potential Bosman transfer for the club this summer.

The Latest: West Ham eye Ginter…

As per his sources, the Irons are now eyeing Bundesliga defender and Germany international Ginter – joining ‘a lot of top clubs’ who have been keeping tabs on the in-demand star.

The 28-year-old, as he’s already confirmed, is set to move on this summer after his contract expires – prompting West Ham to now take note as they eye him for Moyes.

The Verdict: Make a move?

Ginter, a mainstay for his club, has played the second-most top flight minutes for Gladbach behind goalkeeper Yann Sommer – all while ranking in as their fourth-best performer by average match rating (WhoScored).

He’s also made the second-most clearances per 90 (3) out of their squad, standing out as a solid and reliable defender who could seemingly strengthen Moyes’ options at centre-half.

Valued at around £21.6 million by Transfermarkt, bypassing this fee entirely and signing Ginter for free comes as a potential bargain for West Ham.

Newcastle transfer news on Schlotterbeck

Transfer insider Graeme Bailey has now revealed some news involving reported Newcastle United target Nico Schlotterbeck.

The Lowdown: January target

It was reported that the St. James’ Park faithful were eyeing up a move for Schlotterbeck in the January transfer window, but a move from Freiburg never materialised in the end.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-5/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Instead, they signed Dan Burn from Brighton and Hove Albion, but could be in the market for another central defender in the summer, as per 90min.

The Latest: Dortmund bound

Sharing his article on Twitter, Bailey has revealed that the North East club will now ‘miss out’ on signing Schlotterbeck this summer, as he is set to sign for Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga:

“Newcastle miss out on signing of Nico Schlotterbeck,” the journalist said.

“Outstanding young German international did have interest in moving to Tyneside, but Borussia Dortmund were a bigger lure at this point.”

The Verdict: Shame

It is a shame that the Magpies have seemingly missed out on one of their targets in Schlotterbeck.

The 22-year-old is clearly a top prospect, having broken into the Germany national team last month, and his performances in the Bundesliga have merited a move to a big club like Dortmund.

He currently ranks as Freiburg’s best performer in the Bundesliga so far this season, and is high among his teammates in terms of average aerial duels, tackles, interceptions, clearances and blocks won per match (WhoScored).

Schlotterbeck would have been a shrewd signing for Eddie Howe and his team, but it looks like they will have to advance further in the long-term project if they are to beat big clubs to their respective targets.
