England player ratings vs Ukraine: Bukayo Saka dazzles as Kyle Walker dominates Mykhailo Mudryk

The Three Lions cruised to a 2-0 win at Wembley thanks to goals from Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka

England made it back-to-back wins to open their Euro 2024 qualifying group as they cruised to a 2-0 success against Ukraine.

Bukayo Saka was the star of the show for Gareth Southgate's side, setting up the first goal with a wonderful cross for Harry Kane to turn in his 55th England goal.

And then Saka then curled home a world-class second to double the lead as the Three Lions took a firm grasp atop Group C after the opening two games.

Lascelles drops Newcastle injury claim

Jamaal Lascelles has dropped a quite promising injury claim before Newcastle United hosting West Ham United in the Premier League at Saturday lunchtime.

The clash with the Hammers will come too soon, but speaking to talkSPORT (via The Chronicle), the former Nottingham Forest central defender claimed ‘I’m not ruling out Sheff United or Fulham’, before explaining that the type of injury he has is ‘four weeks in a boot and four weeks until you are back on grass’.

The exact timescale of the latter comment would mean that he misses the rest of the 2020/21 term, but the fact that Lascelles is aiming for a potential early return for their games against both Sheffield United and Fulham, which could well be pivotal in terms of whether they avoid relegation or not, should give a lot of promise to the St. James’ Park faithful.

Newcastle need Lascelles back

There is no doubt whatsoever that Steve Bruce will want Lascelles back into the team as soon as possible, given that he is the captain and his leadership qualities could be crucial in driving the North East club away from the drop zone.

The 27-year-old, currently earning £50,000 per week on Tyneside, has not been left out of a single match in the Premier League so far in the 2020/21 season when he has been fit, showing just how important he is to the side.

Nonetheless, if Lascelles were to play any part from now until the end of the season, it would certainly be a big boost to the Magpies.

RFC: Gers dealt blow in pursuit of Murphy

According to recent reports, Glasgow Rangers have been dealt a huge blow to hopes of bringing Jacob Murphy to Ibrox this summer, as sources revealed information concerning the winger’s contract.

The report by Football Insider claims that a Newcastle United source has revealed, contrary to reports his deal is expiring this summer, that Murphy will actually not be available to Rangers on a free transfer.

Indeed, the 26-year-old still has one year remaining on his deal at St. James’ Park.

This will come as a shock, as Steven Gerrard’s side would now have to agree a fee with Newcastle if they wish to land the £25,000-per-week forward this summer, potentially ruling the Ibrox club out of the race to land the former England U21 international on a permanent deal.

It goes without saying that a free transfer would have been far more attainable, so the surprise news that Murphy’s contract is actually 12 months longer than was previously known is certainly a blow.

Transfer Tavern Take

With Murphy currently being valued at £3.15 million by Transfermarkt, a deal for the winger may not be out of financial reach for Rangers, although, with it previously being reported that the 26-year-old would be available for free, the news is likely to come as a blow to Ross Wilson and co.

With Newcastle having paid £10.17 million for Murphy back in 2017, should the Magpies attempt to recoup anywhere near this amount of the winger this summer, it is not a difficult scenario to imagine Rangers turning their attention elsewhere in the transfer market.

West Ham fans flock to Ogbonna claim

West Ham fans are delighted after ExWHUemployee, via West Ham News, shared that Hammers star Angelo Ogbonna is expected to return to full training within the next week – and the Italian was apparently spotted in action on Wednesday afternoon.

Having been out of action since mid-February, suffering an ankle sprain during West Ham’s FA Cup defeat away to Manchester United, news of his return to training comes as a boost for David Moyes.

A mainstay before his knock, Ogbonna was arguably having a wonderful season before injury forced him into rehabilitation.

At times since, the Irons haven’t looked as stable in defence – evidenced by Wolves clawing two goals back during the away win on Monday, not to mention the infamous Arsenal fightback which saw them scrape a 3-3 draw at the London Stadium recently.

ExWHUemployee, however, said it wasn’t long before Ogbonna’s return to full training with plenty of supporters overjoyed at that update.

Since then, the club insider has been proven right with the 32-year-old seen on the live virtual training session. Whether or not that means he is fully recovered is not yet clear.

Nonetheless, you can find all of the most excited fan verdicts down below.

Manchester United record transfer signings: Keane, Pogba and Red Devils' spending evolution

The Red Devils have never been afraid to splash the cash, with their most elaborate additions in the Premier League era including both hits and misses

Manchester United spent £1 million for the first time in October 1980 when prising Garry Birtles away from Nottingham Forest and would go on to smash their transfer record on a regular basis until acquiring Paul Pogba from Juventus for £89m in 2016.

Not all of the deals done by one of the most decorated sides on the planet have provided value for money, but there have been more hits than misses.

The Red Devils have never been afraid to splash the cash, particularly after establishing themselves as a dominant force in English football under Sir Alex Ferguson, and GOAL is on hand to bring you a full run down of their most elaborate purchases during the Premier League era.

  • Getty Images

    Roy Keane | £3.75m | July 1993

United swooped in after learning that Keane had a deal in place to join Blackburn Rovers from Nottingham Forest, with the British transfer record broken when luring the Irish midfielder away from the City Ground.

Keane was still a rough diamond at that point, but Ferguson polished him into a global superstar that will forever hold a place in British football folklore.

The no-nonsense midfielder would become captain of the Red Devils and the standards he demanded of himself and those around him allowed seven Premier League titles, four FA Cups and a Champions League crown to be collected across 12 memorable years.

  • Getty Images

    Andy Cole | £7m | January 1995

A Premier League Golden Boot winner in 1993-94, Cole’s exploits in front of goal at Newcastle made him of obvious appeal to United as they began to take a stranglehold on English football.

He would go on to record 121 efforts for the Red Devils through 275 appearances, despite regularly facing questions of his finishing ability, with history made within weeks of his arrival at Old Trafford when he netted five times in one outing against Ipswich.

Cole could always be relied upon to do his bit for the collective cause, despite being an archetypal fox in the box, and was a key man during United’s historic run to Treble glory in 1998-99.

  • Getty Images

    Jaap Stam | £10.75m | July 1998

The Dutch defender become an iconic figure at the Theatre of Dreams through just three seasons in England – one of which was decimated by an Achilles injury.

His brutal combination of power and pace allowed him to dominant opposition strikers, with his arrival from PSV proving to be one of the final pieces in the puzzle that allowed United to pretty much sweep the board on a trophy front in 1998-99.

An acrimonious departure for Lazio was made in 2001, with Ferguson later admitting that he made a mistake, but there will always be a place for him in the hearts and minds of United supporters that were fortunate enough to catch him in action.

    Dwight Yorke | £12.6m | August 1998

Shortly after breaking the bank to add Stam’s unique brand of steel to their defensive unit, United dug deep again when luring Trinidadian striker Yorke away from domestic rivals Aston Villa.

He proved to be a shrewd addition to the Red Devils’ ranks as a destructive partnership was forged alongside fellow frontman Cole – with Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer proving to be more than capable deputies.

Yorke also starred in the Treble-winning campaign of 1999, when he hit 29 goals across all competitions, and moved on after finding the target on 65 occasions in total through 152 appearances.

A nightmare debut! What happened to Lionel Messi's Argentina team-mates from dramatic Hungary clash in 2005?

Goal takes a look at Lionel Messi's teammates from his international debut for Argentina…

Argentina's blue-eyed boy Lionel Messi made his international debut on August 17, 2005, in an international friendly match against Hungary at the Puskas Stadium in Budapest.

Messi was introduced into the match as a substitute in the second half. He replaced forward Lisandro Lopez in the 64th-minute of the match. Despite going down to 10 men, Argentina won the tie 2-1 thanks to Maxi Rodriguez and Gabriel Heinze's strikes.

What was supposed to be a dream debut for the then Barcelona prodigy, turned into a nightmare soon as he was sent off within two minutes of coming on to the pitch.

But things have turned out pretty well since the horrible debut as Messi is now the most-capped Argentine player of all time with 151 matches in his kitty and also the country's all-time leading goalscorer with 76 goals to his name.

Let us take a look at the players who had donned the Argentina jersey on the day Messi made his international debut.

The Argentine superstar recently won his first-ever international trophy as he guided La Albiceleste to Copa America 2021 triumph. Messi's contract with FC Barcelona got over in 2021 but he is very close to sign a fresh five-year contract with the club.

Mario Santana spent most of his professional career in Italy and played for clubs like Fiorentina and Napoli. After spending the last two seasons at Palermo, Santana retired from professional football.

    3Pablo Zabaleta – DF (Sub)

Zabaleta joined Manchester City in 2008 where he spent the better part of his career and became a legend at the club. He left City in 2017 and spent the final three seasons of his professional career at West Ham United. He retired in 2020.

    4Hernan Crespo – FW

The legendary Argentine forward played for clubs like Inter Milan and Chelsea in his long and illustrious professional career. He retired from football after spending two seasons at Serie A side Parma in 2012.

Crespo joined Brazilian giants Sao Paulo as their head coach in February 2021 on a two-year deal. He won the Campeonato Paulista, the club's first trophy in eight years.

Palace flop Sako now without a club

There have certainly not been too many players to return to Crystal Palace over the years following an initial release.

However, one man who did just that is winger Bakary Sako. However, Steve Parish will be delighted that he is once again off of the wage bill following his exit at the conclusion of the 2018/19 campaign.

The Malian wideman originally joined the Eagles at the beginning of the 2015/16 season, fresh off the back of a brilliant campaign with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Joining on a free transfer, he could not capture his best form in front of goal, scoring just eight goals at Selhurst Park across three seasons before his original contract came to an end in 2018.

It was certainly a relief to have the winger off of the Selhurst Park wage bill considering that he was hoovering up approximately £55k per week throughout his contract. For comparison, that is the same amount that club captain Luka Milivojevic is currently earning at the club and considerably more than fellow wideman Eberechi Eze is currently being paid.

Linking up with West Bromwich Albion in the Championship after his time at Palace came to an end, Sako would intriguingly return to the club just over three months later for a second spell – a period in which he would play just four games before getting released once more.

Now 32, Sako was last seen playing for Cypriot outfit Pafos FC, where he made just six appearances and scored a solitary goal, following a failed move to Denizlispor.

He is now a free agent and whilst he is one of few players to have signed for the Eagles twice throughout his career, a third spell at Selhurst Park seems highly unlikely.

Parish will be delighted that he is no longer forking out for his considerable wages. He made the right call when letting him go dfor the secon time.

Man Utd outdated, Chelsea chaotic – Tactical winners and losers of Premier League season so far

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Frank Lampard are both coming under increasing scrutiny after their respective teams' poor starts to the 2019-20 campaign

  • Getty Images

    Winner: Unai Emery

After an oddly directionless transitional year, Arsenal are finally reflecting their manager’s tactical beliefs, namely frantic energy, sharp vertical counter-attacks, and high-risk possession.

For example, David Luiz and Sokratis guarantee the odd error but their frenzied playing style is exactly why Unai Emery trusts in them.

In addition, while Lucas Torreira, Matteo Guendouzi, and Dani Ceballos would represent a worryingly erratic midfield for a more conservative coach, it is ideal for Emery, who is already in possession of the dynamic front three he needs to create a Klopp-esque 4-3-3.

Once their first-choice full-backs, Hector Bellerin and Kieran Tierney, return from injury, the Gunners will finally have all the pieces in place for a successful – if chaotic – season.

  • Getty

    Loser: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer references the United team he was a part of in the 1990s when explaining his tactical philosophy.

‘Pace and power’ is the long and short of it, with Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, and Daniel James expected to freestyle attack the opposition defence to create the waves of pressure that characterised Sir Alex Ferguson teams.

It has been 20 years since the days of Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke, players name-checked by Solskjaer when asked to describe his tactics. In 2019, Big Six clubs are forced to hold the vast majority of possession while opponents sit back, which explains why Solskjaer’s out-dated methods aren’t working.

There is simply no space in the final third for United’s speedy attackers; Crystal Palace won’t be the last team to park the bus at Old Trafford and emerge with three points.

  • Winners: Everton

Marco Silva's penchant for aggressive attacking football – characterised by extremely high full-backs and constant pressing – explains why Everton were so often formless last year, one minute playing cohesively and collapsing the next.

The addition of Fabian Delph in central midfield adds dynamism on the ball and athleticism off it, potentially preventing matches from spiralling out of control.

Moise Kean finally gives Everton – and Gylfi Sigurdsson, in particular – a target to create chances for, while Richarlison’s directness is nicely balanced by the hard-working Alex Iwobi on the other side.

In short, Everton’s tactical approach hasn’t changed this season but they have signed exactly the right players for Silva’s coaching to bear fruit.

  • Ben STANSALL

    Losers: Norwich & Aston Villa

Although Norwich and Aston Villa are being praised for playing aesthetically-pleasing football so far this season, both Daniel Farke and Dean Smith could be accused of playing with a too-wide formation and a too-open midfield.

Villa don’t use a defensive midfielder and instruct the full-backs to bomb forward, which led to Bournemouth scoring two early goals against Villa a fortnight ago before Crystal Palace – arguably the least creative team in the division – managed 22 shots on goal at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

Norwich were praised for throwing caution to the wind at Anfield on the opening day, but they should not have done the same at West Ham. The hosts repeatedly cut through Norwich primarily because they allowed Pellegrini’s side to play on the counter-attack.

In the Premier League, many home teams would rather sit back but are denied the opportunity. It would be naive for Norwich to assume winning the possession battle is automatically a route to victory.
