Nottingham Forest could risk upheaval if Dwight Gayle reports comes true

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Imagine being this popular.

Dwight Gayle is a player that seemingly every club in the Championship wants to sign. Fulham, West Bromwich Albion & Leeds as well as Middlesbrough all expressed an interest at some point during the summer. Given his record at this level, scoring 59 in 100, you can’t really blame them.

According to Paul Taylor in his recent column for The Athletic, Nottingham Forest were among those in for Gayle during the window and after their display against Wigan on the weekend, he believes that they will do their best to be at the front of the queue again when the January window opens.

But just where would Gayle fit in the current Nottingham Forest side if they were to make a bid for him?

On the chalkboard

Bringing in Gayle would prove to be more difficult than it would seem.

Yes, there might be a portion of the Nottingham Forest fan base that wants him signed, but if you put him in the starting eleven, you have to take someone else out, and even change a few things along the way.

Forest have predominantly played this season in a 4-2-3-1 formation with Lewis Grabban mainly acting as the centre-forward in that formation leading the line, which is where Gayle has played the majority of his career.

Neither of them will be willing to sit on the bench, so either one of them has to go, or you change things a little bit.

If you aren’t willing to drop one of them, the best line of attack is to change to more of a 4-2-2-2 system.

That does mean that most of the creativity is going to have to come from the wingers, but for Forest that shouldn’t be too much of a hurdle to overcome. Joe Lolley provided 11 assists last season so if he keeps up that same pace throughout this term it will be a good starting point.

This will, however, mean that there will only be room for one more central midfielder alongside Samba Sow.

Therefore, the likes of Joao Carvalho, Tiago Silva, Ben Watson, Alfa Semedo, Ryan Yates and John Bostock are all going to scrap it out to get that place. That would cause a potentially troubling scenario in terms of playing time.

So if they want to bring in one man, they might end up upsetting quite a lot more people in the process. Given they’re fighting for promotion is this a risk worth taking? It’s difficult to work out. Certainly on squad harmony, it might not be the best idea.

Whilst his goals might bring points, is it worth it to risk essentially putting so many people out of work for six months?

Aston Villa fans slam Neil Taylor’s performance against Burnley

[ad_pod ]

Aston Villa are beginning to show that spending a lot of money in the summer does not necessarily guarantee success following promotion to the Premier League.

In all fairness, it was a problem Fulham struggled with last year, but the Midlands club’s new signings have not gelled at the start of this campaign. After seven matches, the Villans sit 18th in the table and have won just one match so far.

On Saturday, they were in action against Burnley at Villa Park in a game they would have been hoping to win. When they took the lead, twice, many inside the ground may have been liking their chances of grabbing all three points. However, the Clarets were resilient and clawed their way back on both occasions, meaning that Dean Smith and co had to settle for a draw.

There were some worrying issues in defence, and it was actually one of the players who helped get them promoted who struggled in particular. Neil Taylor played just 29 minutes, but did not help shore up the Villans’ backline when he came on.

His poor display did not go unnoticed by the club’s supporters. They took to Twitter to share their thoughts, and you can see some of the best comments from the social media platform below.

Celtic fans react to Teemu Pukki’s showing against Man City

[ad_pod ]

Lots of Celtic fans have taken to Twitter to continue discussing the brilliance of their former striker, Teemu Pukki.

The 76-cap Finland international has shone for Norwich since signing for the Canaries, scoring 29 Championship goals last season while also grabbing six in his first five outings as a Premier League player – Pukki also won the Premier League Player of the Month award for August.

The 29-year-old spent just one season at Celtic Park in 2013/14, scoring a measly seven goals before being shipped out to Brondby by Ronny Delia – his form since then suggests that the decision may have been a mistake.

One fan asked why Pukki couldn’t show this kind of form for the Bhoys, whilst another said he would have laughed if someone had predicted the Finnish forward’s career to pan out in the manner it has since leaving Celtic.

Charlton fans react to Lee Bowyer’s comments on Chuks Aneke

[ad_pod ]

Lots of Charlton fans have taken to Twitter to discuss Lee Bowyer’s comments on Chuks Aneke.

The former Arsenal striker was signed by the Addicks from MK Dons back in the summer, following an impressive 2018/19 campaign in which he hit 17 goals in League Two.

However, the 26-year-old has only made five substitute appearances so far this term as he finds himself behind five-goal Lyle Taylor and another summer signing, Tomer Hemed, in the pecking order.

An injury to Taylor saw Hemed lead the line against Birmingham last time out, and Bowyer has said that Aneke is yet to convince him that he can be a No.9 in his team – the 42-year-old mentioned that he has been more impressed with the player in a No.10 role.

“At the moment Chuks hasn’t really done anything to persuade me he can play up top,” said Bowyer.

“We tried to put him up there the other day [as a substitute against Birmingham] and he didn’t do so well.

“When we brought him on at Reading as a 10 he was better. So looking at performances I think he is better as a 10.”

Bowyer on Aneke

One fan said that they think Bowyer’s comments are “harsh”, while another argued that Hemed didn’t show too many glimpses of quality either against Birmingham last time out.

Leeds should sign Bolasie and Mings

Leeds United have been extremely impressive in the current campaign but they’re still at risk of slipping out of the automatic promotion places if they suffer a dip in form.

The Whites have already secured the services of Kiko Casilla this month, but there’re a couple of areas that still require improvements at Elland Road, so Andrea Radrizzani has a big job on his hands.

Indeed, Jack Clarke could leave this month amid interest (as per The Sun) from the Premier League and Marcelo Bielsa has already sent Samu Saiz out on loan, so attacking reinforcements are definitely required. And, with Kalvin Phillips filling in at centre-back a lot of the time, it would make sense for the Leeds boss to bring in a defender.

Interestingly, the answer to Leeds United’s winger situation could be Everton’s Yannick Bolasie.

Bolasie is back at Premier League club Everton after activating a break clause in his loan deal with Aston Villa. He was starting to build up ahead of steam under Dean Smith with two goals and five assists to his name, so he would be a great signing for the Whites as he can offer pace and skill, as well as the ability to score and provide.

One of Leeds United’s biggest problems up until this point the current campaign has been finding cover at the heart of the defence, as Liam Cooper and Pontus Jansson have both spent time out the sidelines. Aapo Halme has impressed during his limited appearances, but he lacks the experience required given the Whites’ current position.

So, Radrizzani could play a big part in securing a deal for Bournemouth’s Tyrone Mings.

The Englishman hasn’t been able to secure a regular place at the Vitality Stadium in the current campaign, so a loan move makes sense for the defender. He can operate either at left-back or at the heart of the defence, which is one aspect that would help Leeds massively. And, he has previous experience in the Championship from his time at Ipswich Town, as well as all the defensive attributes needed to become a big part of Leeds’ promotion push.

Leeds United fans – thoughts on potential moves for Mings and Bolasie?

Manchester City’s David Silva revolutionised English football for the better

[ad_pod ]David Silva’s 400th appearance for Manchester City last weekend was both a midfield masterclass and fittingly – given the milestone – a greatest hits compilation of all the amazing gifts he has bestowed on English football since his arrival from Valencia in 2010.On a sunny Sunday afternoon by the south coast he was instrumental throughout as the reigning champions easily dismantled Bournemouth and so beautifully, artistically and effortlessly imperious was his performance that it just didn’t seem fair. At the highest level this sport can offer he looked like a ringer.

Against the Cherries the player nicknamed ‘Merlin’ by his adoring fans resided in his natural habitat of the half-spaces, constantly in the periphery of opponents instructed not to let him out of their sights, and there he bewitched and bedevilled, receiving the ball as if it were a tired head and his boot a goose down pillow, pirouetting on a peseta, then caressing a pass either the simple distance of five yards or curled and pinpoint out wide. When opportunities arose a third option was taken, that of a dissecting through-ball for Sterling or Aguero to pounce on.

The latter always impresses; it never fails to grab the attention, as much for the panoramic vision prior to the execution than the delivery itself but bluntly these are mere flourishes that all great players are capable of producing from time to time. Even so, it should be noted that Silva, in just shy of a decade, has produced such flourishes more than anybody else.

Statistics, such as the ones highlighted above are undeniably important. They substantiate greatness and less importantly they banish those who doubt that greatness to the tribal playground where they belong. Yet for me – a Manchester City supporter who has had the enormous privilege of watching this rare technician for a quarter of my life – what has never been less than astounding are the traits not usually associated with a player of his ilk.

One such trait is his consistency, which maintains at the highest end of excellence, and that is staggering considering that Silva is a craftsman and one of life’s truths tells us that creativity is so often at the mercy of fickle fate. He shows up every week. He comes up with the goods every single week. He normalises perfection.

In over nine years and 30,828 minutes in a blue shirt to date I think I’ve only seen the little Spaniard misplace a handful of passes and on a singular occasion I believe he made the wrong decision (though even with that I’m unsure because the full-back may have misread his intention and darted inside when space was available elsewhere).

In short, it has been the pinnacle of difficult football exhibited with the same uniformity typically reserved for players who rely on character over artistic merit. In short, he paints Picassos with the same consistency that dinner ladies serve up mash.

And he is able to do this because his supernatural talent makes up only a part of his game. Behind his butter-wouldn’t-melt face is the steely mind of a winner. “He is a fighter,†Pep Guardiola said when asked to eulogise about his maestro post-Bournemouth and it still surprises even now to witness Silva’s tenacity because we are brought up in this country to compartmentalise players into ‘types’ and his type aren’t supposed to dig in and sweat.

There is another reason for Silva’s consistency and this too belies the aesthetically pleasing nature of his football. Yes it looks so swish and stylish – continental you may say – but for all that Silva’s output is always economical. It’s lean, minus the extraneous fancy flicks and unnecessary showing off. It serves a purpose and the purpose is everything.

Which is how and why we are not simply talking about a stonewall Premier League legend here: we are celebrating also one of the most transformative players to ever grace our shores.

Before his arrival the Premier League was 18 years of age and had changed immeasurably from its former incarnation. The gradual influx of foreign players and foreign coaches resulted in tactics becoming ever more sophisticated, while diet and training and the more generic culture that surrounded being a footballer was now more appropriate to a multi-million pound industry to that of a pub darts player.

Yet, while on the pitch we embraced the notion of a ball-playing centre-half and had no problem with the introduction of ‘false nines’ in the devastating form of Henry or Ronaldo, what we couldn’t possibly countenance – what was enshrined in our collective mentality not to countenance – was the central positioning of a player slight of frame who was creative.

Sure, we had Gazza back in the day but his physique was that of a part-time bouncer while his hustling, bustling style left only his feet that twinkled.

Before him there was Glenn Hoddle, a sumptuous talent who could – and should – have been the hub of England’s midfield for a generation, except he wasn’t, widely viewed as he was a ‘luxury’ player.

After Gascoigne the list of Premier League central midfielders reads like a roll-call for battle-hardened competitors. David Batty, Roy Keane, Carlton Palmer, Paul Ince. I could go on. Even Arsene Wenger’s peak-era Arsenal side had a midfield staffed by the rangy and pugnacious Emmanuel Petit and Patrick Vieira despite the fact that the French professor did more than most to alter our perceptions of what football could be.

Silva changed all that. Via his impactful creativity he made coaches trust in silk where once there was only steel and in doing so he has helped make English football fundamentally more beautiful. Our centre circles used to be hostile places. A war-zone if we’re leaning towards hyperbole. Now there is ballet, moved from the fringe theatre of the wing to the main stage.

David Silva is unquestionably a Premier League legend. He is deserving of our gratitude too.

Rangers targeting Zak Lovelace

Rangers are among the clubs eyeing teenage prodigy Zak Lovelace, according to The Daily Record’s Scott Burns.

The lowdown

The youngster, who will turn 16 next week, became the second-youngest player in Millwall’s history when he made an appearance from the bench against Coventry City in December.

According to The Telegraph’s John Percy, the striker had to get ‘permission from his parents and his school’ to join up with the Lions squad for the fixture. Lovelace has been called to train with the club’s first team ‘several’ times.

The latest

Rangers have ‘regularly’ scouted Lovelace this season and are hopeful of signing him, as per The Daily Record. They face competition from the Premier League, with Leicester City and Brighton mentioned as prospective suitors.

Millwall are described as ‘desperate’ to keep hold of Lovelace, for whom they have ‘massive hopes’, and they are trying to persuade him to sign a professional contract at The Den.

The verdict

Millwall manager Gary Rowett has waxed lyrical about Lovelace, saying: “Zak is a really good lad. He has come in with a humility and hunger to want to do well – that exuberance of youth. I’d love to see how that develops over the next two or three years because he could be, from what I’ve seen, a top player.”

However, the 47-year-old admitted that the London club might not have full control over the teenager’s next move, so it could come down to who can offer him the clearest or swiftest path to senior football.

Rangers have clearly been impressed on their trips to watch Lovelace if they are interested in signing him, and they may even think that he’s a superstar in the making. After all, journalist Dan Marsh urged fans to ‘remember the name’ when the 15-year-old came on against Coventry.

Newcastle transfer news on Bakker

Craig Hope has revealed that Mitchel Bakker is ‘expected’ to sign for Newcastle United, providing that Bayer Leverkusen can bring in a replacement for him.

The Lowdown: Bruno on his way

To avoid doubt this time, Bruno Guimaraes now looks certain to move to St. James’ Park, in what will be their third new signing of the January transfer window after the arrivals of Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood from Atletico Madrid and Burnley respectively.

Now, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium can focus on bringing in defensive targets, with just a few more days left until the deadline.

The Magpies have conceded an enormous 43 goals in 21 top flight games this season, so it would feel disappointing not to add more reinforcements at the back before Monday’s deadline.

The Latest: Bakker update

As per The Daily Mail journalist Hope, there is still hope that they can sign Bakker:

“Also told still hope of signing Leverkusen left-back Mitchel Bakker.”

He continued: “If Leverkusen can get a replacement sorted then it’s expected Bakker to NUFC for around £16m will go through.”

The Verdict: Exciting

These are exciting times for the Toon Army, as they seem to be strengthening in all areas of the pitch.

The great thing about Bakker is that he is versatile, and so can play as a central defender as well as his main position at left-back, and so the North East club could potentially kill two birds with one stone.

Dubbed someone who has ‘pace and strength’ in addition to ‘footballing ability’ by Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller (via The Chronicle), he has all of the qualities needed for a modern day defender, and at 21 years of age, he still has so much potential to grow further.

Nonetheless, the Tyneside outfit now look to be building a real core set of quality players who will help them both in their relegation fight and well into the future.

West Ham dealt double injury blow

West Ham United have been dealt a double injury blow ahead of their upcoming Premier League fixture.

What’s the latest?

In recent comments cited by the Evening Standard, David Moyes revealed that both Michail Antonio and Aaron Cresswell look set to miss the visit of Southampton on Sunday afternoon, as both players have failed to recover from their respective knocks.

Speaking about the current condition of Antonio – who missed the 2-1 Carabao Cup defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday evening after testing positive for the ongoing viral pandemic – the 58-year-old manager said: “He has no symptoms and I have to say that he is double vaccinated.

“For all those things hopefully we might have him back, yes. The rules have changed so I think he will have a chance. I never said [he would be back on] Boxing Day though, I said over Christmas. I will find out more a little bit later on and we’ll see.”

Meanwhile, the Scot said of Cresswell’s back injury: “It’s taking longer than we expected. We are missing him. He slid into the post at Manchester City and he’s got a slight, I don’t know if you call it on his rib or vertebrae, but he’s got something that is a problem.”

Moyes will be fuming

Considering just how important a part of the West Ham side both Antonio and Cresswell have been so far this season, the news that both players could once again miss out on Sunday’s fixture is sure to have left Moyes fuming.

Indeed, over Antonio’s 16 Premier League appearances this term, the £10.8m-rated centre-forward has scored six goals, registered four assists and created six big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 2.8 shots and making 1.9 key passes per game.

These returns have seen the Jamacia international average a highly impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.17, ranking him as the Hammers’ second-best performer in the top flight of English football.

Meanwhile, over Cresswell’s 13 league outings, the £3.6m-rated left-back has helped his side keep three clean sheets, scored one goal and provided one assist, as well as making an average of 1.7 key passes, 0.9 interceptions, 1.1 tackles and winning 64% of his duels per fixture.

These metrics have seen the 32-year-old defender average a SofaScore match rating of 7.15, ranking him as the Irons’ third-best player in the division in the current campaign.

As such, once again being without the stricken duo against Southampton this weekend will undoubtedly reduce Moyes’ chances of picking up all three points in the clash – something which would come as a huge blow to West Ham’s chances of securing a top-four finish in the Premier League come next May.
