Arsenal chiefs believe they can sign "superstar" forward for £50 million

Arsenal chiefs are convinced they can sign a "superstar" forward for around £50 million this summer, as the north Londoners touch base with his representatives ahead of a potential formal move.

Arsenal also eyeing forward amid Riccardo Calafiori transfer talks

After announcing a permanent deal for goalkeeper David Raya in a £27 million move this week, sporting director Edu is attempting to get Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori over the line for Mikel Arteta.

Fabrizio Romano says Arsenal have opened talks to sign "top quality" passer

They’re now in club-to-club negotiations after contacting the player.

ByEmilio Galantini Jul 5, 2024

Fabrizio Romano broke news late this week that Arsenal have now opened club-to-club talks over deal for Calafiori, and the reliable journalist has since confirmed that he's agreed personal terms on a five-year contract.

The young central defender impressed at Euro 2024 for Italy, playing a crucial role in their progression from the group stage, and was a sore miss for the Azzurri through suspension when they crashed out to Switzerland.

He'd be a very astute signing for Arteta, but as the Gunners attempt to strike a deal for Calafiori, they're also scouring the market for new attacking options. Arsenal want a right-winger who can alternate with Bukayo Saka, leading to their rumoured interest in Lille star Edon Zhegrova among others.

The England star scored 20 goals and registered 14 assists across 47 appearances in all competitions for them last season, but Arteta needs strength in depth if they're to challenge Man City for the Premier League title again and potentially go that one step further.

Arsenal were heavily linked with Wolves star Pedro Neto last year, and it is believed that the Portugal international remains on their radar in the club's search for new wide options. The Molineux forward crashed out of Euro 2024 on Friday night, after Portugal lost their quarter-final penalty shootout to France, so he'll now have more time to think about his future at Wolves.

Arsenal chiefs think they can strike £50 million deal for Pedro Neto

According to TEAMtalk, the Gunners have already reached out to his agency for discussions, with a host of other Premier League sides also monitoring his situation.

Pedro-Neto-Wolves

Wolves value their star forward at around £60 million, but Arsenal chiefs are convinced they can sign Neto for around £50 million, as are his other suitors. Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool have been keeping tabs on the former SC Braga star for the last two seasons, while Tottenham view him as an alternative to Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze.

The 24-year-old, despite injury problems, racked up 11 goal contributions in just 20 league appearances last term. Called a "superstar" by Jamie Carragher, Neto is a pivotal player for Wolves when fit and available, but his extensive injury record is also something to be wary of.

Cricket South Africa to hand over forensic report to parliament portfolio committee

Independent Director Marius Schoeman offers resignation if the report is not sent

Firdose Moonda06-Oct-2020Cricket South Africa (CSA) have committed to presenting the South African Parliament’s portfolio committee on sports, arts and culture with the full forensic report – which it used to fire former CEO Thabang Moroe – by Friday. In a two-hour meeting on Tuesday morning, the Committee expressed their “disappointment” with CSA for the continued delays in making the report public. It also demanded access to the report before addressing any other issue related to the organisation.Under that pressure, CSA independent board director Marius Schoeman promised to step down from the board if the report is not delivered to the committee by the end of the week. While it is unclear whether the committee members, who are members of parliament, will be required to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) – as has been the case for everyone who has seen the report so far – CSA’s legal team will interact with parliament’s lawyers prior to the report being released.”The protocol to follow is that Members’ Council will confirm that the board may release this report to you. It will be released in hard copy, by Fundudzi, by Friday, close of business, 16h30,” Schoeman said. “If this is not done by 16h30 on Friday, I will resign.”It is significant that the report itself will be sent to parliament by Fundudzi – the forensic services company that compiled the report – and not CSA’s lawyers, where the report is being kept. That is to ensure that the parliamentary committee receives a copy of report that they can be sure is not tampered with. This comes after several members of the committee said they suspected CSA of hiding information given the lengthy delays. Again, Schoeman gave a personal guarantee that will not be the case. “There is absolutely no way I will stand by to allow that anything be removed [from the report],” Schoeman said.ALSO READ: Explainer: What South Africa’s cricket crisis is all aboutCSA released the summary of the report, which contained several damning findings of administrative and financial irregularity and breaches of the Companies’ Act by Moroe, on Monday morning. Schoeman confirmed that acting president Beresford Williams, who was present at Tuesday’s meeting, and board member Donovan May, are also implicated in the report, albeit to a lesser degree. The summary also detailed an incident in which they entire board had failed in their fiduciary duties, which suggests that any punitive action CSA may take could be wide-ranging.For that reason – and that litigation against any implicated individuals could yet take place – CSA have refused to release the report in full to anyone other than three of their independent board members, the 14 presidents of the provincial affiliates on condition that they sign NDA’s and the country’s sports minister Nathi Mthethwa, who was not present on Tuesday. Mthethwa has already instructed CSA to give the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) full access to the report, but CSA have not yet done so, which could lead to Mthethwa taking action against CSA.The pending issue of access to the forensic report was the only matter discussed by the parliamentary committee on Tuesday, forcing topics such as transformation, South Africa’s blank fixture list – which, to date, shows no international or domestic matches for the 2020-21 summer – and CSA’s finances to take a backseat. The committee will meet with CSA again once they have read the report.

O jogo

CRB CRESCE NO JOGO E ABRE O PLACAR
Entretanto, o volume de jogo do time alagoano deu resultado.

VITÓRIA EMPATA NO INÍCIO DO SEGUNDO TEMPO
Gol do Leão: 1 a 1.

VITÓRIA QUASE VIRA O JOGO DUAS VEZES
A bola explodiu no travessão.

EXPULSÃO NO VITÓRIA, QUASE GOL DO CRB E JOGO ACABA EMPATADO

Emerson Negueba resolveu arriscar e soltou a bomba, o goleiro Lucas Arcanjo fez uma grande defesa, salvou o Vitória e garantiu o empate no Barradão.

Joe Root backs James Anderson to make amends for Manchester struggles

Joe Root has backed James Anderson to recover from a disappointing performance in Manchester and confirmed that he will play in the second Test against Pakistan at the Ageas Bowl on Thursday.Anderson returned match figures of 1 for 97 at Emirates Old Trafford, saying on Monday that he had “not bowled very well” and “felt out of rhythm” during the first Test. Over the course of the summer, he has taken six wickets in three Tests at an average of 41.16.And while Anderson dismissed speculation that his retirement is imminent, he admitted: “If I keep bowling the way I did this week, the opportunity to retire will be taken out of my hands – it will be a selection issue.”But in his pre-match press conference, Root said that it would be “very silly for us to write someone like Jimmy off,” and said that he expected “to see the best of him again very soon”.”To question Jimmy’s ability and his record – do that at your own peril,” Root said. “There’s a reason he’s got so many wickets over such a long period of time: it’s because he’s a consistent performer. I don’t think it’ll be long until he’s back in the wickets big time.”I think it would be very silly for us to write someone like Jimmy off. He’s still as dedicated as ever, he’s working very hard at his game, and looking very good in practice. I don’t think it’ll be long before he’s got another five-for to his name.”Root said that he had sat down with Anderson during the first Test, and that getting his concerns about his form with the ball off his chest had been helpful.James Anderson struggled for rhythm in the first Test•Pool/AFP via Getty Images

“It just shows that even the greats of the game have those days where it doesn’t always come naturally, where it doesn’t always feel like the easiest game in the world and you know it can be a real struggle sometimes,” Root said. “That’s the way it goes and I feel with Jimmy we know it won’t be long before he’s back at the top and at the peak of his powers and I’m very much looking forward to seeing him perform this week.”Sometimes it’s very easy just to look at the statistics and not have a more broad view on how things are actually going for you. Sometimes you create pressure and wickets come at the other end and you build a partnership that way.”There have been occasions this summer when that’s been the case for Jimmy. Wouldn’t you give him the opportunity [to put things right] with almost 600 Test wickets under his belt?”England named a 14-man squad for the second Test, and will make at least one change to the side that won in Manchester. Ben Stokes will be missing the final two Tests due to family reasons, with Zak Crawley set to slot back in at No. 3 and Root shifting down to his preferred No. 4 role.Sussex seamer Ollie Robinson has been included in the squad for the second time this summer, but appears unlikely to play. Root confirmed that Mark Wood has been suffering from “a knock” in recent weeks, and that England needed to make sure he was “absolutely 100%” before picking him, but said that he had bowled with “high pace” in training on Wednesday.Joe Root has some difficult decisions to make•Getty Images

Root also admitted that he would like to see Jofra Archer bowling at 90mph “for slightly longer periods of time”, but said that he and the England management accepted that “it’s not going to happen all the time”.”He’s going to go through phases where he’s not always operating up at 90mph,” Root said. “All we can ask of Jofra is he keeps putting it in – keeps showing the desire, the want, the hunger to keep getting better, day in, day out.”We know there’s more to him than just bowling fast. But obviously it’s a great point of difference to have when you’ve got someone that can bowl at those speeds. If he gets the opportunity to get out there and show everyone what he can do, [bowling fast] is one of his great assets, so it would obviously be good to see him operating there for slightly longer periods of time.”England squad for second Test: Joe Root (captain), Dom Sibley, Rory Burns, Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope, Jos Buttler (wk), Chris Woakes, Sam Curran, Dom Bess, Jofra Archer, Stuart Broad, James Anderson, Mark Wood, Ollie Robinson

Dyche must drop 6/10 Everton dud to unleash "phenomenal" ace

Everton will be looking to make it four Premier League wins in a row when they travel to face Luton Town at Kenilworth Road this evening.

Sean Dyche's side claimed a third successive top-flight victory last time out, beating fellow strugglers Brentford at Goodison Park, following on from the impressive 2-0 win over local rivals Liverpool.

A second goal in three matches for midfielder Idrissa Gueye secured a vital 1-0 win for the Toffees, as Dyche's side also kept their third clean sheet in as many games.

The Toffees secured their top-flight safety last weekend, extending their ever-present Premier League status for at least another season despite receiving a total of eight points deducted this campaign.

Despite the fantastic team display against Thomas Frank's side six days ago, Dyche should be looking to drop one player to give his side the best opportunity of extending their current winning run.

Why Youssef Chermiti could make way vs Luton

Although he made his first Premier League start in the win against Brentford last weekend, striker Youssef Chermiti could be in danger of dropping back to the bench ahead of the meeting with Rob Edwards' side tonight.

The youngster featured for 89 minutes during the victory, only managing to achieve 33 touches – the fewest of any Everton player who started the game.

The Portuguese forward also only managed to complete 15 passes, an average of one every 16 minutes, at a completion rate of just 68%.

Although he ran the channels well, Chermiti failed to impose himself as the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin or Beto would've, winning just five duels during his time on the pitch, but also losing 11.

It's clear he tried to make a positive impact on the encounter, but his eagerness to score saw the striker stray offside three times and gifting possession away ten times.

Liverpool Echo journalist Chris Beesley awarded the 19-year-old a 6/10 rating, the lowest in the starting lineup, with Dyche needing to unleash another forward against the Hatters.

The man to replace Chermiti against Luton Town

Although he's struggled with injuries again this season, striker Calvert-Lewin, who was dubbed "phenomenal" by former boss Carlo Ancelotti, has been a solid source of goals for the Toffees once again, with his tally of six in the Premier League the joint-most at the club, alongside Abdoulaye Doucoure.

He missed the win over Brentford with a knock, but in his pre-match press conference yesterday, Dyche confirmed that the striker was back in training and in contention for a return tonight.

His latest setback came at an awful time for the 27-year-old, who had managed to find the back of the net in three of his last four outings, including against Merseyside rivals Liverpool.

With Luton's pitch being one of the narrowest in England's top flight, the Toffees may resort to playing the occasional long ball tonight, with Calvert-Lewin's height and aerial ability potentially playing a huge part tonight.

He's averaged 6.2 aerials won per 90 this season, as per FBref, with the striker potentially being the difference in what could be a tight and cagey affair as Luton battle for Premier League survival.

Player workload forces South Africa to skip Pakistan tour in March

South Africa have withdrawn their interest in touring Pakistan for three T20Is in March, citing players workload following the India tour next month as the reason. The planned tour will be rescheduled after the two boards find a new window.South Africa’s tour to Pakistan did face logistical challenges, and CSA was planning to send a security delegation to Pakistan next month during the PSL to assess the situation.South Africa will play three ODIs, the last of which is on March 18, and the PCB had intended to make them stay in Dubai – with the PSL ending on March 22 – and then fly them directly to Pakistan for the three T20Is in Rawalpindi.South Africa are currently hosting England for a T20I series, which was preceded by four Tests and three ODIs. Within five days of the last game against England, they will host Australia for three T20Is and as many ODIs, stretching the last game to March 7. They have to then fly to India. With the IPL expected to begin on March 28, fitting in three more white-ball games in Pakistan in a span of two weeks would have made it hectic for the players. As such, South Africa have not been the busiest team since the 50-over World Cup last year. They have played 13 matches across formats since then, tenth on the list among teams that play the three formats. The PCB struck a sympathetic tone in their reaction, with PCB CEO Wasim Khan accepting that “managing player workload is a top priority” and said the PCB respected CSA’s decision. He was keen to emphasise CSA’s decision to skip the tour in March did not mean these internationals would not take place, and expressed the PCB’s willingness to organise a window for them as soon as possible.”We are pleased that the CSA remains committed to rescheduling this short series as soon as practically possible, Wasim Khan said. “As there is a strong willingness and commitment, both the boards are now exploring their FTPs to find gaps so that we can agree on the dates.”CSA’s acting chief executive Jacques Faul said: “This has purely been done because of the heavy workload and international schedule our players are facing in the immediate future. I have assured my counterpart at the PCB, Wasim Khan, that the tour remains very much on our international schedule.”I would also like to stress that security was not an issue in asking the PCB for this postponement. We will now work together to find an appropriate window in the international cricket calendar.”

Glasner must now boldly drop Crystal Palace’s 5/10 star

It's been an eventful season for Crystal Palace fans this year, one that has seen them endure a seemingly never-ending injury crisis, hefty defeat after hefty defeat, and some less-than-stellar football – but not anymore.

Oliver Glasner's appointment in place of Roy Hodgson last month felt like a changing of the guard and the beginning of what could be a very exciting period for the club.

The experienced Austrian has five points from his first four Premier League games and will be confident of adding three more to that tally this afternoon against Nottingham Forest.

However, if he wants to increase his chance of doing so, he must drop Jordan Ayew for a far more dynamic player.

Jordan Ayew's previous performance against Forest

In the reverse fixture, the Eagles played out an incredibly dull 0-0 draw, in which there was a grand total of seven shots on target between both teams, although only two came from the south Londoners.

The Ghanaian international took one of those, but that was the only notable thing he did in his 95 minutes on the pitch.

It may sound harsh, but it's an opinion shared by the South London Press' Edmund Burk, who awarded him a 5/10 match rating for his performance.

It's a score that is also supported by the numbers. In his 95 minutes of action, he failed to score or assist, took two shots off target and just one on target, missed one big chance, won five of his 11 duels, lost possession 14 times, and misplaced both of his crosses.

All in all, the experienced forward just didn't do enough in that game to justify his selection today, with Glasner needing to contemplate who to replace him with.

The player who could replace Ayew vs Forest

Unfortunately for the former Frankfurt boss, the obvious candidate to replace Ayew – Michael Olise – is not set to make the trip to the City Ground, despite having made a return to full training this week.

That will serve a notable blow as while the French U21 ace also missed out on the game against the Tricky Trees earlier in the season due to injury, in the five appearances he has made against today's opponents, he's registered two assists.

As it is Glasner will have to look elsewhere to find a suitable candidate to fill that void, while also replacing Ayew in the meantime, with the latter man hardly pulling up any trees against Luton last time out either…

The man who replaced the one-time Aston Villa star against Rob Edwards' side midway through the second half was Naouirou Ahamada, although there may be wisdom in unleashing another substitute from that clash in Odsonne Edouard.

A striker by trade, the Frenchman – who has scored six times this season in the league – can operate on the flanks if needed, allowing the Glasner the chance to shuffle his pack for the trip to Nottingham.

Ultimately, Ayew is still an important player for the Eagles, but having disappointed in the reverse fixture with Forest – as well as against the Hatters last time out – it may be time for a change out wide.
