Rob Key confirms interest in England managing director role

Sky Sports commentator admits ‘lifestyle’ is a factor as he weighs up high-profile vacancy

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Mar-2022Rob Key, the former Kent captain turned Sky Sports commentator, has confirmed he is in the running to become the new managing director of England men’s cricket, but concedes that the “lifestyle” of the role may be the deciding factor as he weighs up the pros and cons of taking on such a high-profile vacancy.Key, 42, played 15 Tests for England between 2002 and 2005, with a highest score of 221 against West Indies at Lord’s in 2004. He made his name, however, as an outspoken and popular captain at Kent, whom he led for a total of nine seasons up to his retirement in 2015, and took that same independence of thought into his subsequent commentary career. His candidature has emerged from left-field, but according to the Evening Standard, the paper for which he writes a regular column, his name is in a shortlist of interviewees that includes Marcus North, the former Australia batter who is currently Durham’s director of cricket, and Ed Smith, Key’s contemporary with Kent and England, who lost his job as national selector last year.Related

Key: I need to look at why the mini-stroke happened at my age

Key responded coyly about the role when quizzed on-air by his co-commentator, Bazid Khan, during the fourth day’s play of the Lahore Test, and joked that his desire to play golf would be the deciding factor.”There’s a lot of speculation around… there’s a lot of jobs up for grabs in English cricket,” he said. “A fair few people have been asked, a fair few people are going for these jobs. The thing I have is that you have to weigh up how much golf you can get in doing some of these. For me, the lifestyle thing is the big issue.”In May 2020, Key was hospitalised after suffering a transient ischaemic attack, or mini-stroke, and though he has recovered fully from his illness, he conceded at the time that he would “need to look into why it happened at my age”.The appointment of a new managing director promises to be one of the most crucial elements of English cricket’s so-called “red-ball reset”, following the sacking of Ashley Giles from that role in the wake of England’s 4-0 Ashes defeat.Andrew Strauss, Giles’ predecessor, has returned to the role in an interim capacity, and last week announced a high-performance review of the professional game. However, after stepping down to care for his two sons amid the tragic death of his wife, Ruth in 2018, Strauss himself is not expected to put himself forward for the full-time return.”I haven’t considered that really,” Strauss said last week. “I’ve got unique personal circumstances that makes doing that role difficult and quite frankly there’s always value in getting a new perspective and new views. Nothing ever stays the same or goes backwards. I’m certain there’s going to be some good candidates for this role.”Other potential candidates include two current ECB employees in Nathan Leamon, the England white-ball team analyst, and Mo Bobat, the influential head of performance. One high-profile name who would appear to be out of the running, however, is Alec Stewart, the director of cricket at Surrey, who has reportedly also opted out for family reasons. The ECB advertised for the role on March 14 with applications due by March 27. The recruitment process is being led by consultants at SRI Executive, and the job specifications suggest than “international and/or first-class county playing experience” is “desirable”.

The new Douglas Luiz: Emery must start Aston Villa’s "relentless" ace

Aston Villa are set for a blockbuster Champions League clash this evening with Italian giants Juventus. This is the second European heavyweight that the Villans will host this season, after Bayern Munich’s trip to Villa Park. That game ended in a 1-0 victory for Unai Emery’s side, thanks to a spectacular winning goal from John Duran.

Jhon Duran

Emery will be desperate for his side to repeat their heroics once more, as Thiago Motta’s charges come to town. They are struggling in Serie A this term, languishing in sixth place, four points off top-of-the-table Napoli. Incredibly, they have drawn seven of their 13 league matches and are yet to lose.

There could have been a reunion between former Villa and former star Douglas Luiz this week, but he seems set to miss the game through injury.

Douglas Luiz’s time at Juve

It has been a tough start to life at Juventus for Brazilian midfielder Luiz. The 26-year-old made the move from the Midlands to Turin this summer, joining the Old Lady in a deal worth £42.35m. However, it has not quite worked out he he might have expected so far.

So far, the Brazil international has played just nine times in all competitions for his new side, starting twice. In total, he has played 312 minutes, which incredibly works out at just 3.4 full 90 minute games. It has been a really tough start to life at the Allianz Stadium.

It is certainly frustrating from a Villa point of view, given the midfielder was a crucial player in Claret and Blue. He played 209 times for the club, scoring 22 times and grabbing 24 assists from midfield, even captaining the side on three occasions.

Sadly, the Brazilian has picked up a muscular injury in the past few weeks, which seems like it will keep him out of action against his former club. Villa fans will surely be disappointed not to see their former number six grace the Villa Park turf once more.

Ironically, the Villans could have done with their former midfield star this evening. Juventus have some potent attacking players who Luiz could have helped to deal with.

Instead, they will be relying on the man they replaced him with.

Emery could start the new Douglas Luiz

The man in question here is Ross Barkley. Since returning to the club on a free transfer after leaving Luton Town, the Everton academy graduate has gone from strength to strength in Claret and Blue.

He has played 13 games in all competitions this term, scoring twice and grabbing an assist from midfield. The Englishman has been in great form in front of goal, scoring twice in his last two games, including a late equaliser last time out against Crystal Palace which earned his side a point.

Earlier in the season, Emery noted Barkley’s likeness to Luiz, explaining that he purposefully “added two players with similar characteristics” to their former midfielder. Youri Tielemans is the other man he is referencing here.

The Villa number six will likely have his work cut out to keep several of the Juve attackers quiet. This includes the likes of Kenan Yildiz and Timothy Weah, who both have four goals this season. Luckily for Villa, the Old Lady’s first-choice striker, Dusan Vlahovic, is out injured.

Barkley has been impressive this season in the Premier League from a defensive standpoint, a side to his game that has really developed. As per Squawka, he has won 2.8 ground duels and made 5.3 ball recoveries per 90 minutes. Last season, for a Luton side where he had even more defensive responsibility, he was better.

It could be a tough evening for the Englishman, who will likely just have to sit in front of the back four and break up play, ensuring the likes of Yildiz and Weah do not have much of an effect on the game. He must stay disciplined, but given football statistician Statman Dave described him as “relentless”, this should not be too difficult.

Even though Luiz’s departure was a blow for Villa, they have seemingly replaced him well in the form of Barkley. Wednesday night could be his sternest test yet, and he will certainly be hoping to carry on his standout form from this term so far.

Arteta trying to convince Arsenal to sign Brazilian with £75m bid possible

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is apparently attempting to convince the Gunners board to sign a Brazilian forward, and it is believed the Premier League title contenders are prepared to bid around £75 million for him.

One of the items on their agenda is said to be a new forward, with Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg recently reporting that Arsenal have maintained their interest in signing Leroy Sane on a free transfer from Bayern Munich post-Edu’s departure.

As well as Sane, there are reports that Arsenal could still look to end their long wait for a prolific striker.

There is a lot of pressure on Kai Havertz to lead the line right now, amid the inconsistent form of Gabriel Jesus, and there have been a few interesting options linked in the last few weeks.

Arsenal are believed to be keeping tabs on Alexander Isak, as talks over a new contract at Newcastle United run into complications, as other big-names abroad.

Arsenal prepared to bid £75 million for Raphinha

According to reports out of Spain, via sportskeeda, Barcelona forward Raphinha is firmly on their radar as well amid his sensational start to 2024/2025. The Brazil international is enjoying the best run of his career to date right now, bagging 12 goals and 10 assists in all competitions already, which has understandably put a host of elite clubs on red alert.

Arsenal are prepared to make a £75 million bid for Raphinha, as per the relayed information, and Arteta is personally trying to tempt high-ranking chiefs at his club to sign the former Leeds United sensation.

Barca boss Hansi Flick, speaking to the press recently, even claimed that he’s “never had a player like” Raphinha in his entire managerial career.

“He is a good example of how the team can function,” said Flick on Raphinha’s electric form. “He always has a good attitude in training and in matches. For us he is very important, also because of the counter-pressure he does. And also because of how he prepares to score.

“He has good dynamics with the ball and he has had an extraordinary match. His offensive and defensive dynamics, and his good technique, are something special. I have never had a player like him and he helps us a lot.”

Newcastle in advanced talks for "very intelligent" player in £50m transfer

Newcastle United are reportedly in advanced talks to sign a £50m Premier League ace in the coming transfer window as they look to bolster their ranks under Eddie Howe following a tricky start to the season.

Newcastle continue winless run

A narrow 1-0 defeat to Brighton made it four Premier League games without a win for Newcastle United, as they lost ground on the early Premier League leaders. The Magpies have lost two and drawn two since they beat Wolves a month ago, though they did edge past Wimbledon in the Carabao Cup in that time.

It is a result that has left them in eighth place, five points off a top-four spot and a return to Champions League football after their disappointing finish last time around.

Following a summer that was difficult for the club with financial fair play pressures and a failure to attract any truly big names to the club as they did 12 months previously with Sandro Tonali, and with concern over the relationship between manager Eddie Howe and Director of Football Paul Mitchell, it has not been an enjoyable campaign start at St James’ Park.

But Howe remained upbeat, saying after the defeat that he sees signs of improvement in his side even in their tricky spell of results.

“I thought it was a vast improvement overall in terms of performance from the start of the season, and I think we’re gathering in terms of our overall level, it’s just we’re not totally clicking in every area. And of course to win games at this level, you need all guns firing.”

Nonetheless, new faces could be needed to continue their progression towards the Premier League elite, and now they may have identified their next addition.

Newcastle in advanced talks for Premier League winger

That is according to reports coming out from Spain, which claim that Newcastle United are “in fairly advanced negotiations” to sign Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo.

The Cherries forward has enjoyed an excellent start to the campaign, scoring three times and grabbing an assist in his seven outings, and appears destined to leave the Vitality Stadium sooner rather than later amid growing interest.

Antoine Semenyo for Bournemouth.

Indeed, his massive improvement in recent months has been hailed by Football Analyst Ben Mattinson on X, who dubbed him a “very intelligent” player who has “improved so much” under Andoni Iraola on the south coast.

According to the report, Arsenal, Newcastle and Tottenham are among those eyeing up a move for the winger, who plays predominantly on the right side of attack, a position that Bournemouth were keen to strengthen over the summer.

However, it is Howe’s side who have taken the next step and are the most advanced to sign him, though no side has yet made any “concrete” approach to the Cherries.

It is suggested that any signing could “reach £50m plus bonuses”, a move that would be among the most expensive in Newcastle’s history. However, with the winger still just 24 years old and likely to improve further, he could fit their recruitment strategy and may well be the man who finally gets Howe’s side back to the top echelons of the Premier League.

Spurs have only won seven of their 22 Premier League games so far this season, fewer than Brighton, Brentford and Fulham. The team has picked up a measly four points from the last 27 available – including three defeats on the spin. Richarlison has featured in the last two, against Arsenal and Everton, after missing two months, and is yet to start in the league since returning to fitness. He did, however, start in Thursday's Europa League win over Hoffenheim.

Shreyas Iyer will not be turning out for Lancashire•BCCI

India batter Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of appearing for Lancashire in the upcoming Royal London Cup. Iyer had signed as an overseas player for the 50-over tournament but required surgery on a shoulder injury suffered during India’s home ODI series against England in March. It has since been decided, following discussions between Lancashire and the BCCI, that Iyer will remain in India to continue rehab ahead of his planned return to cricket.”We are obviously very disappointed, as we were thoroughly looking forward to welcoming Shreyas to Emirates Old Trafford,” Lancashire’s director of cricket, Paul Allott, said. “Ultimately Shreyas’ long-term fitness is of paramount importance and Lancashire Cricket fully respects the decision.

“We wish Shreyas all the best with the remainder of his recovery, and from the conversations, which I have had with the player, believe that this is an arrangement he would be keen to revisit again in the future.”Iyer, 26, has played 51 times in limited-overs internationals for his country. He missed the truncated 2021 IPL after suffering a partial dislocation of his left shoulder in the field during the first ODI against England in Pune.Iyer said: “I am gutted to not be able to play for Lancashire this summer, a club that has such history and ambition. I hope to play at Emirates Old Trafford for Lancashire at some point in the future.”

Left in 2019: Pardew’s £1.5m Newcastle signing is outscoring Gordon & Isak

Newcastle United are unrecognisable from the team that struggled against the pit of the Premier League table when Eddie Howe replaced Steve Bruce at the helm.

The sharp-witted tactician might have inherited a team with newfound financial might, but many a lesser mind would have fallen at the first hurdle, for resurrecting St. James’ Park was a herculean task whichever way you looked at it and he exceeded expectations.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe

The transfer strategy has been, more or less, on point. The frontline, for example, has gone from strength to strength under the English manager, with Alexander Isak joining for a club-record £63m fee in 2022 and enjoying prolific success since.

Anthony Gordon, meanwhile, has made incremental improvements since signing from Everton in January 2023, forcing his way to Tyneside in a move worth £45m.

Newcastle have one of the finest attacking partnerships in the Premier League. Gordon was a revelation on the left wing last season, winning the club’s Player of the Year and being heralded for his “unbelievable” performances by Bruno Guimaraes.

Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak

Both, four matches into the current Premier League campaign, have scored one goal. They have yet to fully click into gear but this doesn’t really matter: Newcastle have ten points from 12 and look like a force once again after last year’s injury-ruined effort.

Interestingly, though, there’s a former Magpie who’s flying higher than both goalscorers combined this season. Indeed, Ayoze Pérez has been spectacular over in Spain.

Ayoze Pérez at Newcastle

Newcastle signed Perez from Tenerife for a paltry fee of £1.5m in June 2014, with Alan Pardew’s Toon outfit welcoming a talented young forward who had posted 16 goals and seven assists across 34 matches in Spain’s second tier the year before.

He would go on to perform for Newcastle for five years, to varying degrees of success, finishing with a total of 48 goals and 17 assists across 195 appearances. Tenacious and versatile, he featured across a range of roles and was hailed for his “unbelievable” work rate by Matt Ritchie.

Spread out season by season, that up-and-down form is highlighted. There was so much to like about Perez, but he was not a bona fide superstar and the pretty penny collected for his sale was quite something in the end.

His time at the club came to an end following the departure of his boss and countryman Rafa Benitez, with Leicester City seeing an opportunity and swooping in to sign the Spaniard on a £30m deal.

One of the brighter sparks in a gloomy era, Perez’s departure indeed presented United with quite the paycheck – the figure collected from the Foces equated to a profit of 1900%.

Say what you will, but this is an exceptional piece of business from pre-PIF United. It’s a massive figure to recoup after paying so little in the first place. Now, there’s only warmth at seeing him thrive in La Liga.

Ayoze Pérez is flying this season

Perez has been brilliant of late. Last year, he scored nine times in La Liga for Real Betis, starting 29 matches, while also bagging twice in the Europa League.

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

His efforts last season even saw a call-up to the Spanish squad for the 2024 European Championship. Now, we all know how that went; those wounds are still fresh so let’s not dig into the grit of Ayoze’s tournament.

In any case. The 31-year-old’s return to national action and indeed victorious campaign bears testament to his cultured take on the later phase of his career, restoring his shooting touch with some gusto.

As per FBref, the 5 foot 10 talent ranks among the top 6% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for goals scored, the top 15% for tackles and the top 5% for blocks made per 90, showcasing a tough and determined style to complement his natural-born finishing ability.

Now a Villarreal player, he’s enjoyed some big moments since arriving at the backend of August, notching three strikes from only five games in the Spanish top flight. What’s more impressive is that Perez has only started two of those five fixtures, completing 63% of his dribbles and 80% of his passes too, as per Sofascore – highlighting his technical soundness and elite athleticism.

As you can see above, the nature of Perez’s strikes makes a telling comment on his big-game aura. The timing of the goals has ensured that the Yellow Submarine have claimed vital points in their bid to finish at the top of the table.

Perez’s three-goal return so far for Villarreal means that he has outscored both of Newcastle’s principal goal threats this season, also equalling Gordon’s total goal record for Newcastle – 14 strikes – since the start of last season, despite the fact that the England international completed his transfer in January 2023.

While Newcastle will certainly not rue the sale of a player who left for a handsome fee, there is perhaps an element of ruefulness that he was not involved under Howe’s wing. Fashioned into a centre-forward in the experienced stage of his career, Perez has enjoyed 82 career outings as a right winger, and given his potency, he might have been the perfect player to finish Newcastle’s current frontline with a flourish.

Reigan Heskey: Teenage son of a Premier League great emerging as an academy goal machine at Man City

The tricky winger has scored for the Cityzens at every age group level and all that is left is to make his senior debut alongside his older brother

Five sets of brothers have played together for Manchester City, with the most recent and successful example being Yaya and Kolo Toure, who together helped the club win their first trophy in 35 years in 2011 as they lifted the FA Cup and then a first league title in 44 years 12 months later. And a sixth pair of siblings, with a famous father of their own, are looking to join them.

Jaden Heskey, son of former Liverpool and Leicester City striker Emile, has been steadily making a name for himself at youth level within the Etihad Campus over the last two years, and last May got his first taste of glory when he helped fire City to win the FA Youth Cup. But this term, his younger brother, Reigan, has been grabbing the headlines, earning a reputation as a twisting and tricky winger with a thirst for goals. Indeed, the only player at the club who can currently compete with the teenager when it comes to finding the net is Erling Haaland.

City have produced some thrilling wingers within the last few years, with Cole Palmer developing into one of the Premier League's biggest stars since leaving the Etihad Stadium for Chelsea while Oscar Bobb impressed Pep Guardiola before his season was cruelly disrupted by injury. And now Heskey is shaping up to be the next big thing to come out of City's academy and make the leap into the first team.

Provided, of course, that his older brother doesn't get there first…

Getty ImagesWhere it all began

Reigan was born in January 2008 while his father was playing for Wigan Athletic. Part of his upbringing came in Australia, however, when ex-England international Emile played for Newcastle Jets. In 2016, a couple of years after the family had moved back to the north west of England, Reigan enrolled in the City academy at the age of eight, following the path of Jaden, who is two years his senior.

He steadily worked his way through the club's age-group teams, but was catapulted into the Under-19s in November 2023 when he was just 15 for a UEFA Youth League game against Young Boys. Heskey was informed he had been called-up to the team while he was in class at school, and he lined-up in attack alongside Jaden. In just the eighth minute, he earned a penalty, which he duly stepped up to convert.

AdvertisementGettyThe big break

Heskey was promoted to City's U21s – also known as the Elite Development Squad (EDS) – earlier this season at Norwich City, and despite being five years younger than some of his opponents and team-mates, he scored a hat-trick in the space of 22 minutes. The forward scored his team's second goal within two minutes of being brought on at the start of the second half, netting with a close-range tap-in following a short corner, while his other two goals were individual efforts after coming in from the left wing.

"He’s got an unbelievable chance to be a top player. He has a lot of attributes you’d look for in someone of his position," raved coach Ben Wilkinson. "To come on in an EDS game as a 16-year-old and score a hat-trick isn’t something you see very often.

"Our job is to steer him in the right direction over the next couple of years and not let him get too high in these moments. I’m sure he’ll have some bumps as well. We’ll make sure he doesn’t get too low in that point and just try to keep him on track."

How it's going

Heskey has scored 16 goals this season across four separate competitions and four different age categories. He is the joint-leading scorer in City's U18s team with 10 goals, while he has also netted in the EFL Trophy – against senior professionals twice his age – and the UEFA Youth League, in addition to his treble in the Premier League 2.

The forward is also on the way to emulating his father's international career, as he has made five appearances for England's U17s, and in September he scored his first international goal, netting against Germany.

Getty Images SportBiggest strengths

Heskey is renowned for his pace, his nifty footwork and his ability to worm his way past defenders on the left wing and cut inside. He also has a deadly shot, and although he is naturally right-footed, he is more than capable of using his left, which makes him harder to defend against..

"We're synonymous with players in those wide positions that at this club have to be able to beat players one-vs-one and create situations you can win the game from. Reigan's got all those qualities every single game I've seen him," City's then-U19s coach Brian Barry-Murphy said after Heskey's Youth League debut. "He's a highly talented player – who obviously has a lot of things to work on – but it was good to see him play so well in his first game."
