Howe’s new Isak: Newcastle explore move for “super-fast” Sesko alternative

Newcastle United are facing a pivotal summer as they brace for the potential departure of star striker Alexander Isak.

The Sweden international, who has rapidly become a fan favourite since arriving on Tyneside, has made it clear that he is open to a move away, and Liverpool are ready to test Newcastle’s resolve with what could be a British-record bid.

Isak’s absence from the club’s pre-season tour of Southeast Asia, attributed to a “minor thigh issue”, has coincided with reports of a breakdown in contract talks.

Newcastle were keen to offer him improved terms, but Isak is believed to have asked for £300k per week, a demand that far exceeds the club’s current wage structure.

Though the Magpies maintain that Isak is not for sale, Liverpool’s growing interest, and Isak’s own openness to the move, has prompted Newcastle to begin preparations for life without him.

In that scenario, they would need a striker who not only shares some of Isak’s traits but also has the potential to grow into an elite Premier League forward.

Newcastle looking at Benjamin Sesko alternatives

According to GIVEMESPORT, one of the candidates to fill that role is Loïs Openda, the Belgian forward currently playing for RB Leipzig. The Magpies are believed to be ‘exploring’ a move for the striker.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

While the club have also expressed interest in Leipzig teammate Benjamin Šeško, Openda offers a more attainable option. One who, despite operating in a struggling side last season, demonstrated the kind of raw output and energy that Newcastle value highly.

Former Club Brugge manager Philippe Clement, who worked with Openda during his development, labelled him “super-fast”, as well as “combative” during difficult spells – precisely the kind of character Newcastle’s recruitment department seeks.

Aston Villa'sDiegoCarlosand Ezri Konsa in action with RB Leipzig's Lois Openda

His contract at Leipzig runs until 2028, and a deal won’t be cheap, especially given Club Brugge’s 12.5% sell-on clause.

However, with Leipzig likely to part with Xavi Simons, while Šeško has a much higher price tag, Openda may be the more available of the two.

How Openda compares to Isak

Openda’s playing style is defined by pace, aggression, and sharp movement. While he doesn’t match Isak’s height (1.77m vs. Isak’s 1.92m), he brings a directness that can stretch defences and a physicality that belies his frame.

Lois Openda in action.

He’s a centre-forward by trade but is comfortable drifting out wide. Ideal for Howe’s system, which demands positional flexibility in transition.

Statistically, there’s more overlap with Isak than one might expect, with the pair deemed to be similar players among their European peers, as per FBref. According to the data site, Openda averaged 2.82 shots per 90 minutes last season in the Bundesliga to Isak’s 3.10 in the Premier League.

His shots on target per 90 (1.14) and shot-on-target percentage (40.3%) closely mirror Isak’s (1.34 and 43.2% respectively). While Isak recorded more non-penalty goals (19 vs. 9) and expected goals (17.2 vs. 8.2), that comes in the context of Newcastle’s more cohesive attack compared to Leipzig’s disappointing season, which ended with a 7th-place finish and early Champions League exit.

Where Openda truly stands out is in his mentality and off-the-ball work – qualities Howe prizes.

While his defensive stats are modest, just 0.07 tackles in the final third per 90, his pressing intensity and recovery runs have drawn praise from Bundesliga observers. He’s also adept at attacking space in behind, a trait that fits Newcastle’s counter-attacking DNA under Howe.

RB Leipzig striker Lois Openda.

That said, Openda is far from the finished product. His passing accuracy (63.8%) lags behind Isak’s (75.3%), and he averages fewer progressive passes, carries, and successful take-ons per 90.

With his flaws comes room for growth. Under Howe, a coach known for improving attacking players, those gaps could narrow quickly.

At 25, Openda is entering his prime, and with 27 caps for Belgium already under his belt, he has experience at the highest level.

The Premier League isn’t unfamiliar territory for clubs tracking him either. Aston Villa and Leicester City have previously monitored the Belgian, but neither made a formal approach.

Now, Newcastle appear to be in the strongest position – and in the most urgent need.

RB Leipzig's Lois Openda and Xavi Simons.

While Openda may not yet have Isak’s polish or reputation, he brings a skill set that could flourish under the right guidance. His pace, directness, and goal threat are real, and paired with the right supply line, he could be a devastating outlet in the Premier League.

He’s not an exact copy of Isak, but if they do lose their star striker to Liverpool, Loïs Openda represents a logical and exciting step forward.

Tottenham serious contenders to sign Premier League star at £50m+ discount

Tottenham Hotspur are serious contenders to sign an “unbelievable” Premier League forward this summer, and his club are now willing to listen to offers, according to a report.

Spurs looking to strengthen in attack

Tottenham’s Premier League campaign has been nothing short of a disaster, but bizarrely, they still stand a good chance of making this season one to remember, given that Ange Postecoglou’s side are a two-legged tie with Bodo/Glimt away from the Europa League final.

That said, the underperformance in the Premier League suggests new additions will be needed this summer, and Spurs are particularly keen on strengthening in attacking areas, with AFC Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo among the targets.

The Lilywhites are plotting a move for Semenyo to bolster their wide options, while the same report reveals they are also in the race for Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Matheus Cunha, who has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United in recent days.

Tottenham hold internal talks over hiring ex-Liverpool manager worth £39m

It would be quite the move.

Semenyo and Cunha have shone in the Premier League this season, but Tottenham are also interested in signing a player who hasn’t been at his best, with a report from Caught Offside revealing they are now serious contenders to sign Manchester City’s Jack Grealish.

Man City are now willing to cash-in on Grealish this summer, and they will entertain offers of £38m – £43m, meaning they are set to make a huge £50m+ loss on the £100m they paid to sign him from Aston Villa in 2021.

Villa are among the rival suitors for their former player, while Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest and West Ham United are also named as potential suitors, so there is no shortage of interest from within the Premier League.

"Unbelievable" Grealish needs fresh start

The Englishman has enjoyed a great deal of success during his time at the Etihad Stadium, and he played a major role in City’s treble-winning 2022-23 campaign, picking up five goals and seven assists in the Premier League.

Perhaps most crucially, the former Villa man scored at the Emirates Stadium to help give his side a major advantage over Arsenal in the title race.

However, it would probably be a wise decision for the 29-year-old to move on this summer, given that he has fallen down the pecking order considerably, often being limited to appearances as a substitute.

The winger is clearly a talented player, having previously been lauded as “unbelievable” by members of the media, and his ability is underlined by the fact he ranks highly across some key attacking metrics over the past year.

At 29-years-old, Grealish needs to receive regular minutes on the pitch, so it would make sense to move on this summer, and a move to Tottenham would likely be of interest, should they manage to win the Europa League.

Toffolo 2.0: Nuno must revive "coveted" Nottingham Forest gem's career

Nottingham Forest strengthened their case to secure a spot in the Champions League for next season by beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 on Monday night.

The Tricky Trees picked up all three points to move up to third in the division, above the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City, thanks to goals from Elliot Anderson and Chris Wood.

Whilst the usual stars were performing for Nuno Espirito Santo, including the two goalscorers, there was a surprise performance from the rarely-seen Harry Toffolo at left-back.

Harry Toffolo's surprise performance against Spurs

The English defender was named in the starting XI for the first time in the Premier League this season, having mainly been an unused substitute, and stepped up to produce a fantastic display in a huge match.

Harry Toffolo

Toffolo’s best moment of the game came in the second half when his mind-boggling clearance off the line prevented what looked like a certain goal for Dejan Kulusevski, which would have brought Spurs back in the game with plenty of time still to play.

The former Norwich full-back also made two blocks, three tackles, and one interception down the left flank to keep the home team at bay, and secure a big win for Forest.

He has seemingly revived his career at the City Ground, given his complete lack of starts prior to the game, and Nuno could repeat the blinder he just played with Toffolo by reviving Ramon Sosa’s career at the club.

Why Santo should unleash Ramon Sosa

The forward played one minute off the bench against Spurs in his 16th cameo of the season, coming off the bench in 16 of his 17 appearances in the division.

Sosa, who Ross Wilson described as a “coveted” player last summer, could make a surprise impact in the final few games of the season, reviving his career at the club in the process, if the manager is willing to hit the jackpot by unleashing from the start in the Premier League.

The 25-year-old attacker joined from Talleres last year after a run of impressive performances in the Copa de la Liga Profesional during the first half of 2024.

As you can see in the table above, Sosa displayed his quality at the top end of the pitch with goals, assists, ‘big chances’ created, and by constantly dribbling past opposition players.

That quality was also on display in a rare start in the FA Cup against Luton, when the forward scored and produced an assist, creating one ‘big chance’, in a 2-1 win back in January, which shows that he does have the potential to translate his form over to English football.

It is now down to Nuno to provide Sosa with enough opportunities on the pitch in the coming weeks to make him his secret weapon in the push for the Champions League places, reviving the attacker’s career at the City Ground and hitting gold in the process.

From Kenya to Meghalaya – Tanmay Mishra's 20-year journey of perseverance

From playing for Kenya to moving to India in search of the bigger prize, it’s been a long journey for the batter. But his eagerness to contribute remains intact

Ashish Pant29-Nov-2023Tanmay Mishra was a starry-eyed youngster, part of a strong generation of Kenyan cricketers that had the promise of a new era. They had just made the 2003 World Cup semi-final, and talk of Full Membership was gathering steam. Then Kenyan cricket was driven into an abyss by power-hungry administrators. Two decades later, the veteran of three World Cups – two ODIs (2007 and 2011) and one T20 (2007) – is trying to rediscover his glory days in India’s far-east, in Meghalaya, after several attempts of breaking into India’s domestic system. His first opportunity came with Tripura in 2019. In just his second game, Mishra smashed his maiden List A century – a 101-ball 102 against a strong Madhya Pradesh attack that had Ishwar Pandey, Kuldeep Sen, Kumar Kartikeya and Venkatesh Iyer. He followed it up with three back-to-back fifties and finished the 2019 Vijay Hazare Trophy as Tripura’s second-highest run-getter. He also made his T20 and first-class debut during the season. It promised a bright, new beginning, but as fate would have it, Covid-19 struck, and Mishra’s career hit a snag.Once the domestic season restarted, budget constraints at Tripura meant he didn’t receive a callback, and it took him close to four more years before Meghalaya came calling. He hopes to cash in again, even though he hasn’t started as well as he would have liked.”One of the things is the learnings over the years, I want to sort of help the guys when I can,” Mishra tells ESPNcricinfo. “I just want to try and contribute to winning for the team. I know the sort of opportunity I have and I am grateful for this opportunity.”At times, though, Mishra can’t help but wonder what could have been.

****

It’s August 2007. India A are in Kenya for a series. Rohit Sharma, fresh off an India debut, is on tour. As Mishra takes strike, Rohit dishes out a few verbal volleys.”He was just swearing at me, saying a lot of nasty things when he was standing at third slip,” Mishra recalls with a laugh. “And later that evening, after all the things he said, he came up to me and asked me about the places you could visit.”I just said to him, ‘you’ve been giving me such a tough time in the day and now you want me to host you’. So, like a proper Mumbaikar, he went , match (it’s a match, you’ve got to do it). We are here to win, you are here to win.

“We ended up going out and had a really good time. This is a bunch of us. There was Pragyan Ojha, Parthiv Patel, and the then India A physio Vaibhav Daga who is with Lucknow [Super Giants] now. He was there for only one match. At that time, we sort of struck a bond.”That friendship remains strong, but their careers have taken different routes. Rohit has become one of the finest all-format batters ever. Tanmay’s journey, on the other hand, has been one of toil.

****

The Mumbai-born Mishra was eight when his family moved to Nairobi. Cricket wasn’t Kenya’s No. 1 sport, but because Mishra’s family stayed in a large estate housing Indian families, cricket wasn’t far away.Tennis-ball cricket soon became something serious and while school cricket wasn’t as strong in Kenya, club cricket was huge. A lot of these clubs were formed by Indians who had migrated and were doing well in the circuit, and it was a quick way to get noticed.”The club cricket structure in Kenya was very strong,” Mishra says. “Like you would get about 10,000 people watching it. There were different kinds of Indian communities. You had the Kutchi community, the Swaminarayan community, the Sikh community, so you would get professionals coming from India.”If you had like a derby sort of thing like, say, Swaminarayan people versus Kutchi people, you’d get about 20,000 people watching the game. So that’s where the game picked up, like, the interest sort of grew. And club cricket was something that helped me polish my game.”Mishra scored oodles of runs in club cricket to quickly rise up the ranks. He made his first-class debut a month before his 17th birthday and his ODI debut less than 18 months later in Bulawayo. He was run out in his debut game against Zimbabwe for 5 but gave a good account of himself in the second outing scoring 46.Tanmay Mishra in Kenyan colours•Getty ImagesIt did not take Mishra long to establish himself in that Kenyan middle order. He went to the West Indies for the 2007 ODI World Cup, followed by the T20 World Cup in South Africa. But at the back of his mind, he always knew that playing cricket wasn’t a sustainable profession in Kenya. So, later in 2007, he moved to Mumbai to pursue a degree in business administration. He did not know a lot of people in Mumbai but club cricket on Sundays kept him engaged.”Just like a monkey never forgets how to somersault, it (cricket) sort of never went,” he says. “For three-and-a-half years, I regularly played club cricket, just to make sure the hand-eye coordination and stuff like that stayed intact.”Then 2011 happened, and with Kenya qualifying for the ODI World Cup, Mishra returned to Kenya to try his luck. But his welcome back wasn’t as warm, because of his near-three-year break. He admits it did not make many people in the Kenyan cricket fraternity happy. A way back wasn’t going to be easy. However, he had the support of then-captain Jimmy Kamande, who believed that “if there is someone who can represent Kenya better, then that someone should play.” Mishra still had to return to league cricket and score a bucket-load of runs to prove his worth. The result was a place in the Kenya squad for the 2011 World Cup.It was a decision that would shape the next decade of his career. Kenya had a disastrous campaign, but Mishra finished as the team’s second-highest run-getter. The one innings that caught people’s notice was his 72 against an Australia attack which had Brett Lee, Mitchell Johnson and Shaun Tait.”After that night, things were very different,” he says. “I got a bit of runs, and especially against Australia, it changed everything. And even my father, or those who knew my father from the cricket fraternity, they said ‘he’s got to come and start playing here. You don’t know what can happen. Let him play here.'”I had a few friends of mine who said, at least play your club cricket in Mumbai. You never know, you still go represent Kenya, but you never know. And then in two years’ time, I remember Kenyan cricket wasn’t playing the cricket it was supposed to be. And I made that change.”A pivotal moment in Mishra’s career came in 2012 during Kenya’s tour to Visakhapatnam where they were playing an ACA XI side in preparation for the T20 World Cup qualifiers. Lots of runs there earned him an IPL call-up from Deccan Chargers, and was signed up as a local player courtesy his Indian passport.Mishra played just one game that season and did not get to bat, but it was motivation enough for him to make the switch full-time and look for options in India. So after representing Kenya in 42 ODIs (1128 runs at 34.18) and 15 T20Is (227 runs at 15.13), he packed his bags and headed to the place of his birth Mumbai at the age of 27.Tanmay Mishra is ready for his Meghalaya stint•Tanmay Mishra”To get an opportunity in a team like Mumbai is very difficult. Regardless of how much you do, there is always someone better than you. I knew it was not going to be easy, I am going to be competing against almost 100 people for one spot, coming from a place where you don’t have competition,” Mishra admits. “I was scoring runs, but those runs would have never gotten counted. It’s against who you score.”So even after scoring runs, if you took those stats somewhere and especially in a place like India, people would be like, what is this? We have domestic cricket, and the cricket is very strong over here. It wasn’t them being rude. It was just asking the right question maybe in a different way.”Mishra’s last outing for Kenya was in 2013 and for the next six years, he did all that he could to break into the Mumbai side. He scored runs in the Times Shield tournament, DY Patil T20 Cup, Kanga league, and was named in the Mumbai probables, but the senior call-up never arrived. He was also picked by Royal Challengers Bangalore for INR 10 lakh in 2014 but did not get a game. Was there frustration? “Lots,” he says. “Sometimes you just have to accept, and you have to persevere. You’re not a bad player, when you’ve played as much as cricket I played. It’s just that sometimes you have to accept that there could be a different state for you.”Mishra had an opportunity to play for another state after his RCB stint in 2014, which he passed, a decision he regrets to date. “You can call it my naivety or ignorance where I thought I might get an opportunity for Mumbai considering I’m already in IPL. I should have taken that opportunity for that state team that had arrived during the IPL itself.”He had to eventually move out of Mumbai to look for opportunities. It was in 2017 when he went to Tripura to play club cricket. He scored the runs but the call-up still took two years to arrive. In 2019, he was named in the Tripura side as a guest player. That opportunity lasted all of a season. Now, in 2023, after all these travails, Mishra the journeyman hopes Meghalaya can give him another wind. A consistent run of games where he can put his experience into play and deliver performances of note. He may have aged, but the eagerness to contribute and win remains the same as it was in 2003.

'Got a lump in my throat' – South Africa Test centurion Sarel Erwee opens up on mental health battles

“As a man, it’s kind of frowned upon to show mental weakness or a bit of softness,” he says after a ‘very special’ knock in Christchurch

Firdose Moonda25-Feb-20222:48

Sarel Erwee: ‘I was a phone call away from calling it quits’

Sarel Erwee was going to quit. It was the summer of 2019, he’d been playing cricket for a decade, was approaching his 30th birthday and thought his dreams of being an international cricketer were over. He had reason to. Erwee had gone almost two years and 30 innings without a first-class century and averaged 28.63. Even before that, his average across 75 matches hovered just above 35. He had just had enough.”I was a phone call away from calling it quits,” he said after becoming South Africa’s newest Test centurion in Christchurch. But then came an intervention. “I had huge support, when I sat down with my family, with my parents and they picked me up. I saw a sports psychologist and we worked through it daily. It was a hard slog to try and get motivated again, to give my best after wanting to give up,” he said. “All the years of hard work felt pointless and worthless at one stage.”Until they didn’t and the sessions Erwee went to worked. He went on to score two hundreds in two matches in early 2020 and to double his average to 54.80 in the last two years. He was selected for the South African squad to play Sri Lanka at home, then to tour Pakistan, West Indies and against India at home and, despite Aiden Markram’s waning form, didn’t get a game. It was only when Keegan Petersen contracted Covid-19 and was forced out of the visit to New Zealand and Markram was granted the concession of moving to one-drop, that Erwee got his opportunity and two Tests in, he has made the most of it.

“As a man, it’s kind of frowned upon to show mental weakness or a bit of softness. There’s a lot of work still to be done. I am in that process every day, every week, every month, where I am trying to better my mental wellbeing.”

He is the first South African opener to score a century in a year, since Markram in Pakistan. He shared the highest opening stand in 18 innings and helped the team score more runs on one day than they did in the entire first Test. His was an innings defined by the discerning leave – Erwee did not play at a third of the deliveries bowled to him – and the well-timed drive, and it was an innings that played out in front of his sister, Chantelle, who has not seen him for four years.Related

  • The Test hundreds may not be there, but Bavuma is close to being SA's best batter right now

  • 'You need to score runs', Dean Elgar's stern message to 'vulnerable' Aiden Markram

Erwee “got a lump in my throat,” and wiped a tear from his eyes when he was asked what it was like to score a century alongside the batter he is likely to replace in the medium-term, Markram, and with a member of his family in the audience.”It was extremely special. They (Dean Elgar and Markram) are two good guys. They’ve taken me under their wing and helped me through this journey. It was lovely to be there with them and lovely to celebrate and get that hundred in front of my family. My sister lives here in New Zealand,” he said, as his voice cracked. “Sorry, I’ve got a lump in my throat here. She’s been through a tough time here, so it’s nice for her to have something to smile about.”Honest emotion, heightened by the global pandemic that has kept people away from each other for the last 24 months, is still rare in professional sport, especially among men. But Erwee has spent too long and worked too hard to hide his feelings. In the same week that a well-known South African rapper, Riky Rick, died by suicide, Erwee put mental health in front and at the center of the conversation and asked for it to be given more attention.Sarel Erwee struck his maiden international century•Getty Images”It’s a big thing and I don’t think we focus on it enough in South Africa, not just in cricket but in all sports,” Erwee said. “And in general life. As a man, it’s kind of frowned upon to show mental weakness or a bit of softness. There’s a lot of work still to be done. I am in that process every day, every week, every month, where I am trying to better my mental wellbeing. It’s a big part of my life and probably will be for a long time.”For someone in their second Test match, who has just achieved a century, to demonstrate the composure to discuss a topic so serious spoke about Erwee’s maturity, as a person and a player, and provides a reminder that Erwee is no overnight sensation. He is 32 and has done years in the often-overlooked-and-under-rated domestic game and maintained that it is a satisfactory training ground for the biggest stage.”You’ve got to get on with it at domestic cricket. You’ve got to prepare yourself. Whether it’s your first year or your sixth year, you’ve got to prepare yourself for international cricket if that’s what you want to do,” he said. “You’ve got to front up and show up every single day and make sure you get better. I am very fortunate that I had a year to settle into the squad and find my feet preparation-wise, and find out what it takes to do half decently or do well at this level. That’s just the help from team-mates. Preparation and fronting up is key.”Elgar also used the words “front up,” when he explained his decision to bat first – the only captain in 11 Tests to make that choice. On a pitch with less bounce than the first Test and strong winds making it difficult for the bowlers, his top three have so far proved him right but for Erwee, it’s not so much conditions as it is mindset that fueled South Africa’s performance. “We are here to win a Test match. We want to be one-all leaving the shores here. You’ve got to front up and that’s what we did today. We’ve got a goal in mind. If that means you have to bat first on a greenish wicket or a wicket that does something, so be it. That’s the nature of this game.”

Sunderland chief in contact with 14-cap midfielder who Cesc Fabregas "loves"

Sunderland have been in dreamland this season, with the addition of Granit Xhaka’s top level experience a huge factor in their success, and Regis Le Bris has hinted at another major signing.

The Black Cats are set to return to action from the international break in the hope of picking up where they left off against Arsenal two weeks ago. They shocked the Premier League leaders by coming from behind to rescue a late draw at the Stadium of Light. Now, with a trip to face Fulham up next, Le Bris has admitted that he expects a “tough challenge” in West London.

Victory could take Sunderland to as high as second and just four points off leaders Arsenal if a number of other results go their way. It would represent the remarkable run that they’ve been on, which has already almost guaranteed safety and potentially allowed them to focus on other ambitions.

Much of their success has come courtesy of an excellent summer transfer window. The arrival of former Arsenal man Xhaka has proven to be particularly successful, with the midfielder ending some unfinished business in the Premier League.

It’s been such a success that the Black Cats may look to repeat their genius in 2026 by signing another former Arsenal man in Matteo Guendouzi. Le Bris recently had his say on a potential deal for the Frenchman.

Le Bris shares Matteo Guendouzi to Sunderland update

Speaking to reporters in his pre-match press conference before his side’s meeting with Fulham, Le Bris refused to rule out signing Guendouzi and even shared that he’s still in contact with the midfielder.

This follows reports from Italy that Sunderland have joined the race to sign the Lazio midfielder, who is valued at around €30m (£26m).

It seems as though it would certainly be a welcomed reunion for Le Bris, who worked with Guendouzi at Lorient in the early stages of both of their careers. Now, with the Frenchman far more experienced these days – he has 14 senior caps to his name – the Sunderland boss could reap the rewards.

Described as a “great professional” by former Germany defender Arne Friedrich in the past, Guendouzi could yet have the chance to follow Xhaka’s path and end some unfinished business in the Premier League, courtesy of Sunderland next year.
