Speaking to after the game, the 33-year-old explained, "The fans are emotional, of course they are. They have travelled a long way, they spend a lot of money to come and watch us. I was just having a chat with one of them, I said we are giving everything. There is no need to panic, we are still in a good position in the league, we are still in the Champions League, Carabao Cup quarter-finals, there is no need to panic. We got beat, we do apologise for that result, but the most important thing is that the lads are giving everything. We are giving more under the circumstances."

Eddie Howe is already dealing with injuries to star players like Jacob Murphy and Alexander Isak and on Saturday, Miguel Almiron and Fabian Schar had to leave the pitch with hamstring injuries.

Lauren James, Linda Caicedo and GOAL's Team of the Women's World Cup group stages

As well as the England and USWNT stars, Japan are well-represented in the best XI of the tournament's opening fortnight…

What an incredible group stage we've just been treated to at the 2023 Women's World Cup. There were huge shocks, with two-time winners Germany, Olympic gold medallists Canada and South American champions Brazil all crashing out, while the underdog stories kept coming as Jamaica, Morocco and South Africa made the last 16 for the first time in their respective histories.

We've seen surprise results, too, such as Japan thrashing Spain, and the big guns are starting to warm up, as seen in huge wins for Sweden and England.

At the heart of it all have been some seriously impressive individual performances, with the race for the Golden Ball award certainly heating up with each matchday that has passed. As we prepare for all the drama that is sure to come in the knockouts, GOAL picks its team of the Women's World Cup group stage…

GettyGK: Chiamaka Nnadozie (Nigeria)

When you look at Nigeria's squad, you're immediately drawn to the attack. Asisat Oshoala, Ifeoma Onumonu, Uchenna Kanu and Rasheedat Ajibade are among the players Randy Waldrum can call upon in the final third, but one of the stars of their group stage was at the other end, in goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie.

Four years on from becoming the youngest goalkeeper to keep a Women's World Cup clean sheet, the 22-year-old has experience that belies her years and that certainly helped her as she kept two big clean sheets against Olympic champions Canada and a determined Ireland.

Racking up a save percentage of 83.3 in her first three games, Nnadozie's stand-out moment was the stop she made to deny Christine Sinclair, the greatest goalscorer in the history of international football, from the spot. It gave Nigeria a great foundation to build on in Group B.

AdvertisementGettyRB: Tiernny Wiltshire (Jamaica)

Again, Jamaica's star names come in the forward areas, with Manchester City star Bunny Shaw certainly the poster girl for this team, but their defence was the key as they caused one of the shocks of the tournament by knocking out Brazil.

The Reggae Girlz are yet to concede at this World Cup, with a 1-0 win over Panama sandwiched in between goalless stalemates with France and the South American champions, and Tiernny Wiltshire was absolutely solid in the latter two results.

Tasked with keeping some real top talents quiet in her right-back role, Wiltshire won 10 duels, made 10 clearances, won five tackles and both of the aerial battles she competed in across the two games. There haven't been too many outstanding, eye-catching right-backs over the first phase, but there haven't been any more reliable and dependable ones than the 25-year-old.

GettyCB: Amanda Ilestedt (Sweden)

How often can you say that a centre-back is in the race for the Golden Boot? Amanda Ilestedt certainly is after netting three times from defence in Sweden's first three games.

The first of those was absolutely crucial, her header from Kosovare Asllani's 90th-minute corner saving Sweden's blushes and allowing them to start with a win over South Africa. A few days later, she came to their rescue in a different way, breaking the deadlock from another set-piece just before half-time, the Olympic silver medallists having found Italy tough to break down before that goal.

Ilestedt, who signed for Arsenal this summer, has been important at the other end of the pitch, too, helping Sweden to record two clean sheets as they enter the knockout rounds as just one of three teams to take maximum points in the group stage.

GettyCB: Naomi Girma (United States)

There's no doubt that the U.S. women's national team were poor in the group stage, with their tally of five points the lowest they've ever recorded at a Women's World Cup. That said, Naomi Girma has been excellent for the reigning champions in the heart of defence.

Only conceding once in the first three games, the U.S. were relatively solid at the back despite their struggles, Girma's composure and ability to take control of situations particularly important given the team lost captain and star centre-back Becky Sauerbrunn just before the tournament.

So often what the 23-year-old does can be under-stated and therefore go unnoticed, but it certainly shouldn't. She's already one of the best in the world in her position.

Petersen confirms reporting suspect approaches

Alviro Petersen has become the first player to confirm that he had reported fixing approaches in the country’s domestic T20 competition, but has denied any involvement

Alviro Petersen has become the first South African player to confirm that he had reported fixing approaches in the country’s domestic T20 competition, but has denied any involvement. His series of tweets were in response to an article on , which said Petersen was being investigated. They come after Gulam Bodi was banned for 20 years in January after admitting to contriving or attempting to fix matches during the 2015 Ram Slam T20 series.”I have seen some media reports about the match-fixing scandal and my name was thrown around… herewith some facts about Bodigate,” Petersen posted.”As far as I’m concerned I’m under no investigation. I confirm that I reported the matter to SACA CEO Tony Irish and ACSU (Anti-Corruption Officer) Louis Cole three days after I was made aware of the fixing scandal. Subsequent to me reporting the matter, two other players also came forward and reported that they were approached. I told the ACSU that all I wanted was for them to stop the fixing in the Ram Slam before it happened. I was in daily communication with the ACSU after I reported the matter. They knew about my meetings and discussions with others.”SACA could not confirm Petersen’s claims because the body will not comment on an ongoing investigation but CEO Tony Irish told ESPNcricinfo, “We have full confidence in David Becker to run a thorough investigation.” Becker is a sports lawyer and a former ICC head of legal, and is heading this investigation. Those conducting and involved in the investigation could also make no comment. ESPNcricinfo understands that Petersen has a lawyer, Robin Twaddle, who advised him not to comment on the matter.Petersen’s franchise, the Highveld Lions, confirmed they are in negotiations to draw up a new contract with Petersen for the 2016-17 season. When asked if they would wait for the outcome of the match-fixing investigation before finalising their contract list, Lions CEO Greg Fredericks said they would not be able to because, “it could take months”.ESPNcricinfo understands that at least three South Africa international cricketers are among those who have been questioned along with several franchise players. Many of them are believed to have rejected Bodi’s offer to fix matches but are guilty of failing to report those approaches. One player who was questioned told ESPNcricinfo he spent “five or six hours with the investigators,” and believed he had cleared his name. He has “not heard anything” from them since the meeting more than a month ago and is now “waiting and waiting and waiting” to see what sanction, if any, he will face for failing to report the offer.Under South Africa’s Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act of 2004, match-fixing and spot-fixing in sport is a crime. The South African Police Service is still waiting to receive information from the investigation, after which they will decide whether to look into the matter themselves. When Bodi’s ban was announced, Haroon Lorgat, CSA CEO said he believed they caught Bodi in a “planning phase” and no matches were fixed, which would make a criminal case unlikely.

Kumble regime not to contest KSCA elections

Anil Kumble, the former India captain and current president of the Karnataka State Cricket Associaton (KSCA) has announced that his administration, which includes former India team-mate Javagal Srinath, will not contest the upcoming KSCA elections. Kumble and Srinath, the association’s secretary, came to power in November 2010, when they beat Srikanta Datta Narasimharaja Wadiyar, the former maharaja of Mysore.During Kumble’s tenure, the KSCA was the only major state association in the country run by former cricketers. The other players on the committee include former India seamers Roger Binny and Venkatesh Prasad, who hold the posts of vice-president. Kumble said that the expectations on former cricketers taking to administration is always greater than administrators from non-cricketing backgrounds. At a press conference held at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore, in the presence of Srinath and Rahul Dravid, a KSCA committee member, Kumble said one of the biggest achievements of his team had been to spread the game and quality facilities to cities and towns outside Bangalore. He added that they hoped their programmes would serve as a template for future administration.A book citing proof of the work done by his administration was also distributed. His team’s reason for not contesting the forthcoming elections was to ensure that a state association must be “constantly evolving” to “accommodate fresh ideas, dependable processes and systems.”Kumble and Srinath stated that the expansion of the game to cities and towns outside Bangalore was also a major achievement. In the last three years, Mysore, Hubli and Shimoga have hosted Ranji Trophy and India-A matches. The three venues hosted matches between India A and West Indies A over the last month and, according to Kumble, grounds in Belgaum and Raichur would soon be ready to host Ranji matches in the upcoming season.Kumble said that hosting matches featuring the West Indies A squad was “just the beginning” and had been done by giving “support and leadership” to zonal level convenors from the Bangalore headquarters. The expansion of the game across the state, he added, was an ongoing process he hoped the next administration would take forward.Srinath stressed that the expansion of the game at the “grassroots” had been part of the KSCA’s main objective to “give a youngster in a small town facilities on par with that of Bangalore”, something which could only be done by maintaining “consistency” in the quality of nets, pitches and outfields across the state. Srinath added that the BCCI’s decision to hand over the entire West Indies A series to Karnataka was recognition of the progress made in the state.”The norm is to organise games across the country but the BCCI acknowledged that we have good facilities here,” Srinath said. “That’s a testament to our work and it gives us immense satisfaction. When you see the likes of Sehwag and Zaheer playing in Hubli, that is what you want. That should inspire at least 20-25 youngsters to take up the game. That can only come if you take the game to the districts.”He also stated that the KSCA had made itself financially independent for the next 10 years: “We have enough resources for the next ten years. If the BCCI stops paying us from tomorrow, we have enough funds through our fixed deposits and the interest accrued from that.”Srinath highlighted areas where former cricketers could make a difference. “Have we done justice to the kids who are the real stakeholders of this game? Have we provided them with the facilities and opportunities? Coming from a cricketing background, we knew exactly where that had to be stemmed,” he said.
