Aston Villa: Fans react to Keinan Davis update

Stoke City want to sign Aston Villa forward Keinan Davis on loan, according to The Telegraph’s John Percy.

And a number of Villa supporters have been reacting to the reliable reporter’s post on social media.

According to Percy, The Potters have held talks over a temporary move, however, no agreement has been reached. A decision is expected in a few weeks, with Stoke hopeful of signing the 23-year-old ahead of the new season.

Davis, who still has three years remaining on his Villa Park deal, has made 85 appearances for Villa.

The forward turned out 15 times in the Premier League last season, however, only one of those appearances came as a starter.

He was used as a winger and a striker by Dean Smith during the previous campaign, but it appears as if he could be heading to Staffordshire over the coming weeks.

Villa fans react

Percy posted the Villa-related news on Twitter on Thursday evening. These Villa fans were quick to share their thoughts on a potential move, with one describing it as ‘perfect’.

Everton confirm Townsend signing

Some Everton fans have been left fuming as the Goodison Park faithful confirmed the signing of Andros Townsend on their official Twitter page.

The Merseyside club advertised the signing of the former Crystal Palace winger in an announcement video, as he was pictured wearing the new home kit.

As per their website, Townsend has signed on a two-year deal on a free transfer after his contract expired at Selhurst Park.

While he is an experienced Premier League player, having played for both Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United as well as the Eagles in the past, the signing has not impressed some Toffees supporters.

Townsend scored just one goal in 36 games in total over all competitions across the 2020/21 season (Transfermarkt), and at 30 years of age, is already past his peak.

Southampton linked with Hoppe

Southampton are the latest Premier League side to be linked with a move for Schalke striker Matthew Hoppe and the youngster could be a superb addition to Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side this summer.

What’s the word?

According to 90min, Southampton, Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur and Wolves are all keen on signing the 20-year-old, who is likely to leave the German side this summer as they look to raise funds to ease their precarious financial situation, which was only made worse by their relegation from the Bundesliga last season.

The report suggests that the named clubs are expected to make an approach for Hoppe soon, and given that Danny Ings’ future with Southampton is currently in doubt after he rejected a contract offer from the club, perhaps we will see the South Coast club act quickly to bring in the USA striker as his long-term replacement.

Would he be a good signing?

Despite Schalke’s struggles last season, Hoppe was able to contribute six goals and one assist in 22 Bundesliga appearances, which saw him finish as their top scorer in the German top-flight, despite it being his first season in the first-team.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-southampton-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Southampton transfer rumours and news!”]

That included a hattrick in a surprise 4-0 win against Hoffenheim, which led former Germany striker Jurgen Klinsmann to sing his praises, saying:

“Seeing him there today, scoring three goals in probably one of the most difficult moments in Schalke’s history, is just incredible.

“This is a fairytale story, you know? It should make the kid super proud, it should make the youth system in America super proud and it’s a big, big deal at Schalke.”

A report from ESPN praises Hoppe’s off the ball running, as well as his pressing ability and skill in the air, which immediately marks him out as someone that Hasenhuttl would surely love to have in his 4-2-2-2 system at Southampton, given that he has favoured a partnership of Che Adams and Ings – two quick strikers who possess the energy and ability to be effective in their off the ball running.

Therefore, Saints vice-chairman Martin Semmens should definitely consider a move for the 20-year-old sensation this summer, as he could be a superb option for Southampton in the long term.

CFX Academy media open day

CFX ACADEMY MEDIA OPEN DAYThe CFX Academy held a Media Open Day on the morning of Monday 29 April, which was attended by ten local media representatives, including CricInfo and one pressman each from Bulawayo and Mutare. The morning began with refreshments at ten o’clock, and was followed by a welcome from administration manager Temba Mkhosana. He followed this with a brief history of the Academy, the brainchild of Dave Houghton, and a video of the South African SuperSport programme Extra Cover, which showed Mike Haysman interviewing Houghton about the Academy.Mr Mkhosana then went into more detail about the history and the function of the Academy. It opened on a wing and a prayer in 1999, most of the money coming as the result of Houghton’s sponsored walk from Bulawayo to Harare the previous year, which raised public awareness as well as money. There followed a question time and tour of the Academy facilities and the house where the students live, 100 metres from the ground. Finally the media were able to observe a practice session run by Eddo Brandes, who has taken over as head coach from Dave Houghton, and speak to some of the students.Below are some extracts from the Media Pack produced for the day.HISTORY OF CFX CRICKET ACADEMYThe CFX cricket Academy in Zimbabwe was established by Dave Houghton who raised the initial capital with his sponsored walk from Bulawayo to Harare which took 22 days in June 1999 and raised over Z$900 000.The CFX Cricket Academy is a non-profit organization funded by the community at large and the business community in particular. A fully equipped pavilion with state-of-the-art presentation facilities is complete. The ground has been upgraded and now has a wicket that the New Zealanders described as the best wicket they had played on. Bob Woolmer, on a recent coaching visit, commented that the Academy’s facilities were among the best he had seen anywhere in the world. The initial set-up of six all-weather nets with floodlights, three turf nets and three cricket cages were included in the original capital budget. The CFX Cricket Academy falls under the umbrella of the governing body, ZCU, who have helped with the capital start-up costs and have also purchased a house for the students to live in whilst they attend the Academy. The name `CFX Cricket Academy’ is derived from our main sponsor, CFX, who have committed themselves to sponsor the Academy up to the next World Cup in 2003. Joining CFX are individuals and businesses who are approached to sponsor the CFX Cricket Academy and who are identified by boundary board advertising around the cricket ground which is at Country Club. The other large source of support is directed at individual student sponsorship of $100 000 a year, and the CFX Cricket Academy is indebted to its longstanding sponsors. There is both plenty of scope for new sponsors who are interested in supporting the development of cricket among the youth of Zimbabwe and gaps around the boundary for their advertising boundary boards! For two years, students of the CFX Cricket Academy spent their winter attached to cricket clubs in the UK. This has proved to be an invaluable experience for the students who have come from diverse backgrounds. Candidates have been selected from all walks of life and from urban and rural centres. There have been representatives from Bulawayo, Chivhu, Chitungwiza, Gweru, Harare, Karoi, Mhangura, Norton, Ruwa and Selous, from both high-density and low-density areas.Judging by the number of students who have been selected for both the national and the Zimbabwe A sides, the principle of selecting students on merit has proven successful. The most recent CFX Cricket Academy ambassadors in the public eye include Dion Ebrahim, Sean Ervine, Gary Brent, Douglas Marillier and Travis Friend, who has firmly established his position in the national side. Since its inception CFX cricket Academy has been responsible for the training of several students who have been selected for both the national and A sides. The CFX cricket Academy itself has played most of the touring international sides, including New Zealand, Bangladesh, India and West Indies, the most notable performance being a four-run loss toe West Indies in a nail-biting finish watched by about 2000 supporters. Our major objective is to produce players of international calibre and also to promote the development of the game in the remotest corners of our country. We rely heavily on companies to sponsor cricket through us by student sponsorship, boundary board advertising and donations.MANAGEMENT STRUCTUREMr Gwynne Jones left the Academy to take up a post with Scottish cricket at the end of 2001 and since then a new team has been engaged to run the affairs of the Academy. Unfortunately we have also just lost the services of the founder of this Academy, Mr David Laud Houghton, who has decided to move to England for a short while. The new structure is as follows:Head Coach: Eddo BrandesAdministration Manager: Temba MkhosanaAssistant Coach: Walter ChawagutaBatting Coach: Alistair CampbellSecretary: Anthea ReelerBookkeeper: Trish HawkesFitness Trainer: Steve ScottPsychology Consultant: Graham PriorMarketing Agent: Jacky WhiteTo assist the above team and map out the policies of the CFX Cricket Academy is a Management Committee that also includes the Administration Manager and Secretary.Chairman: Ray GripperCFX Bureaux de Change: Kevin ButlerFinance: Zed RusikeZCU Board Member (i/c Development): Mac DudhiaMarketing: Pip Maxwell and Craig AnticevichThe Academy year is now set to run from February to September, after which the students will be posted to the five major provinces in Zimbabwe – Masvingo included from 2002/03 season – to play and coach. The aim is to prepare the students to be good citizens as well as sportsmen, and therefore the curriculum includes subjects not directly connected with the game. The booklet lists six areas: sports management, cricket studies, physical development, sports psychology, sports medicine and injury prevention, and life skills. The programme includes several sessions on studying other cultures, mainly African and Asian. After the students leave at the end of September, the Academy facilities will be available for the junior age-group sides, the Under-14, Under-16 and Under-19s, to prepare for their annual visit to South Africa at the end of the year. There is also recognition of the need to work together with other academies and countries involved in cricket development. It is hoped to offer Academy places to students from Kenya, Namibia and possibly Zambia in future years. There is also the possibility of hosting foreign age-group teams during the end-of-year period.

Pundit can’t see Van de Beek leaving Man United for Liverpool

Liverpool are in need of a Gini Wijnaldum replacement and there is one midfielder who arrived with a lot of hype and expectations at Old Trafford. However, Donny van de Beek fell way short last season and despite this, former Liverpool star Paul Stewart can’t see the Red Devils letting one of their players go to Anfield.

Van de Beek was very impressive during Ajax’s famous Champions League run in the 2018/19 season and he was one of a few players who didn’t leave in the immediate aftermath, but despite spending another season in the Eredivisie it doesn’t appear to have helped his career.

The Dutch international was handed just four Premier League starts all season, something which would have been unimaginable when he joined for £35 million last season, and Ajax legend Sjaak Swart has claimed that Van de Beek would be wonderful for Liverpool, who are on the hunt for Wijnaldum’s successor.

Jurgen Klopp will have an extensive list of midfielders he would like to sign this summer and although Van de Beek has undoubted quality, it would be unlikely to see him turn up at Anfield, according to Stewart who spoke exclusively to Football FanCast:

“They may not want to sell him to one of their biggest rivals in Liverpool because if he turned out to be a big success then it would be a kick in the teeth for them.”

Liverpool are not the only side linked with a move for the midfielder as Arsenal have reportedly made contact about the possibility of signing the 24-year old, this comes after their pursuit of Martin Odegaard appeared to stop before it had even begun.

Van de Beek’s frustrating season was summed up and brought to an end when he picked up an injury when with the Netherlands and that ended up ruling him out of the European Championships.

Liverpool fans love Thiago skill footage

A number of Liverpool supporters have been hailing Thiago after some incredible footage of him showcasing his technical ability emerged online.

The Reds eventually secured a third-place finish in the Premier League last season, putting together a strong end to the campaign to guarantee Champions League football at Anfield in 2021/22.

Thiago was arguably his team’s standout player during a 10-game run which yielded eight wins and two draws, performing superbly in the middle of the park.

It may not have been a dream first season at Liverpool for the 30-year-old, but by the end of the campaign, he appeared back to his best.

Thiago is now on Euro 2020 duty with Spain, looking to have a huge impact at a major international tournament this summer.

On Saturday, footage emerged [via @FootballJOE on Twitter] of the midfielder volleying long balls to a team-mate in training and producing outrageous touches when receiving passes from the other side of the pitch.

Yorkshire take turn to enjoy batsman's paradise at Bath

Rain brought a merciful release for the bowlers as the Bath Festival pitch continued to prove a batting paradise on the second day

Richard Latham14-Jun-2001Rain brought a merciful release for the bowlers as the Bath Festival pitch continued to prove a batting paradise on the second day.The home side declared at lunch at 553-5 after Mike Burns had taken his score to 221, the highest ever by a Somerset batsman against Yorkshire.Mark Lathwell also batted brilliantly to be just two short of a century when Jamie Cox closed the innings. The former England batsman had faced only 109 balls, hitting 12 fours and three sixes.Soon Somerset’s seamers were finding life just as tough as their Yorkshire counterparts, offering little threat as Matthew Wood and Scott Richardson began to take some revenge. Both openers had reached half-centuries in a total of 119 without loss when the rain, which had been threatening, brought an end to the day’s play after 29.3 overs of the Yorkshire innings.Earlier Burns had finally fallen to a catch at the wicket having batted for more than seven and a half hours, facing 367 balls and hitting 28 fours and a six. After sharing stands of 206 with Cox and 161 with the other Matthew Wood playing in ths match, Burns helped Lathwell add 132 for the fourth wicket before departing with the total on 525. He had come in at 26-1.Lathwell was denied a century before lunch by the tim it took to retrieve the ball after his third six off Middlebrook. It sailed over the hospitality marquees and into a car park. After a year out of the game following knee surgery in 1999, Lathwell struggled to rediscover his best form last season but he has now passed 50 in five of his nine Championship innings this summer.Somerset coach Kevin Shine said: “I was very impressed with Matt Wood who had a great debut, and showed a lot of promise.” Regarding Mike Burns, Shine said: “Mike looked a class batsman out there; that’s the best that I have ever seen him play.”When asked about Mark Lathwell being stranded on 98 not out when Somerset declared, the coach said: “Mark’s innings was fantastic, a great knock, very exciting and free-flowing. We always knew that we were going to declare at lunchtime. Mark wasn’t too bothered that he missed out on his hundred.”

Pundit can’t see Raphinha leaving Leeds

In an exclusive interview with The Transfer Tavern, Rob Lee, who made 280 Premier League appearances, can’t see Raphinha leaving Leeds United this summer despite his good performances this season.

Raphinha was a deadline day signing by Marcelo Bielsa and after playing and scoring for Rennes on the final day of the transfer window, the Brazillian had 20 minutes to decide if he wanted to join Leeds.

The £60,000-a-week winger has been linked with a move to Liverpool this summer as they continue to prepare for a potential exit of both Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, who have been linked with moves to both Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively.

Speaking on why Raphinha won’t be leaving Leeds this summer and how he must continue to perform for more than a season, Lee told FFC exclusively:

“I think recently he’s been very good but at the start of the season I don’t think he was that great, and I think it’s just taken him time to adapt to the Premier League.

“Some of these players do well for three months and think they have a God-given right to leave the club they are at. It bewilders me sometimes that players have a few good games and think they’re better than the club they’re at.”

The 24-year old winger has missed the last three games after he picked up an injury during their 2-1 win against Manchester City when Fernandinho blocked him off.

Raphinha has taken to the Premier League with ease as the 24-year old has managed six goals and six assists, all while playing for a newly promoted team.
