Warner, Dhawan set up breezy Sunrisers chase

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details4:25

Agarkar: No standout bowler in RCB attack

Half-centuries from David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan laid the platform for Sunrisers Hyderabad to cruise to a target of 167 and pick up their first win of the season. They were aided by a dewy outfield, but Royal Challengers Bangalore would have known their total was never going to be good enough to test Sunrisers on a flat Chinnaswamy Stadium pitch.Having been sent in, Royal Challengers were 93 for 2 in the 12th over of their innings, with Virat Kohli batting on 41, when two wickets in two balls from Ravi Bopara precipitated a slide that saw them lose their last eight wickets for 73 runs.Royal Challengers were always going to struggle to defend 166, and a poor start from their seamers only made their task harder. The first ball of Sunrisers’ chase encapsulated the story that was about to unfold. Sean Abbott sent down a full-toss, and Warner simply met it with the full face of his bat to send it screaming away to the extra-cover boundary. By the end of the second over, Warner and Shikhar Dhawan had hit five more fours and a six, against Abbott and Harshal Patel’s assortment of hit-me balls, and Sunrisers had shaved 36 runs off their target.Warner was in a particularly punishing mood, and in the fifth over took two fours and a six off successive balls from Varun Aaron. The six was the shot of a man in the zone. Aaron saw Warner making room and dug it in short, getting the ball to rise over shoulder height, but Warner still managed to jump off the ground and uppercut the ball over the backward point boundary.Royal Challengers introduced spin in the eighth over, which began with Sunrisers 73 for 0. Warner muscled a short ball from Yuzvendra Chahal over the leg-side ropes, but the legspinner had his revenge three balls later, when he trapped Warner lbw as he failed to connect with a sweep.Williamson missed another sweep in Chahal’s next over and ended up dragging his back foot out of the crease. The twin strikes could have stalled some of Sunrisers’ momentum, but KL Rahul ensured that didn’t happen. He pulled Sammy for an authoritative four soon after walking in, and stepped out to Chahal and hit him fiercely to the straight boundary in the next over. By that point, Sunrisers had brought the equation down to 57 from 52 balls. With eight wickets in hand, Dhawan well set, and plenty of dew for the bowlers to contend with, there was only going to be one winner.Dhawan, who had been content to ride in both Warner and Rahul’s slipstreams, accelerated as he approached his fifty, hitting two massive sixes off Abu Nechim, a pull and a pick-up shot over backward square leg. Royal Challengers weren’t just beaten comfortably, with 16 balls remaining, they also suffered the anxiety of watching AB de Villiers hobble off the field with a twisted ankle, suffered while trying to stop a ball with his feet.Interviewed between innings, Ravi Bopara said the Sunrisers bowlers had struggled to grip the dew-soaked ball too. If so, they did a pretty good job to cope with it. They couldn’t control every ball, and gave away their share of boundaries to AB de Villiers and Sean Abbott, but bowled a lot of good balls towards the end of the Royal Challengers innings, usually targeting the base of the stumps. They took three wickets with yorkers in the last five overs, one from Ashish Reddy in the 16th over and two from Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the 20th.In between, Trent Boult took out de Villiers, who sliced a wide one straight into sweeper cover’s hands, and removed Abott and Harshal Patel in the same over, with well-directed short balls. In all, Royal Challengers lost their last six wickets for 41 runs, and their last five in the space of ten balls. The total of 166 was far less than what Royal Challengers seemed set for during a breezy first-wicket partnership between Chris Gayle and Kohli. With the ball coming on beautifully and the outfield lightning-quick, both batsmen were able to find the boundary by simply pushing the ball into gaps.Gayle fell in the sixth over, flicking Praveen Kumar straight to deep square leg, but Kohli was still batting fluently at the other end, and a spilled return catch from Karn Sharma in the ninth over may have raised Sunrisers’ worries of having to chase an outlandish target. But that wasn’t to happen. Karn got rid of Dinesh Karthik, who picked the wrong ball to try and slog-sweep, and Bopara rattled Kohli’s off stump when he tried to force him away through the off side. Next ball, Mandeep Singh looked to flick a legcutter and got a leading edge to off. There didn’t seem to be anyone in its way, until Warner flew to his right from short cover to pluck it one-handed. It wouldn’t be his last eye-catching contribution of the day.

Yorkshire sign Finch and Maxwell for the Blast

Yorkshire have brought fresh ambition to the NatWest Blast by completing the signing of two of Australia’s most destructive Twenty20 batsmen: Aaron Finch and Glenn Maxwell

Glenn Maxwell joins Aaron Finch as Yorkshire aim to fill Headingley for the NatWest Blast

Yorkshire have brought fresh ambition to the NatWest Blast by completing the signing of two of Australia’s most destructive Twenty20 batsmen: Aaron Finch and Glenn Maxwell.Finch and Maxwell are both expected to play a prominent part for Australia in the World Cup and their arrival at Headingley, coming so soon after Shahid Afridi’s decision to join Northants, is a shot in the arm for England’s T20 tournament as it faces up to comparisons with the Big Bash League.Finch, Australia’s T20 captain, and Maxwell will both arrive at Headingley in late May immediately after their IPL commitments. He had a decent, if not spectacular, tournament in 2014 and will feature in all formats for Yorkshire.Yorkshire have long prioritised their Championship cricket, and took the title in 2014, but with debts of more than £20m they are desperate to translate their reputation as a cricketing county into regular sell-out T20 crowds.Maxwell has the greater challenge of trying to maintain T20 form with only one match a week, a challenge that Kevin Pietersen, among others, has bemoaned as extremely difficult.Yorkshire will be desperate for the alliance of Finch and Maxwell to take them to Finals Day and fill Headingley in the same manner as Surrey and Middlesex are attracting large crowds to The Oval and Lord’s. The advent of floodlights at Headingley, which will allow them to push back start times to 7pm, is also expected to make a sizeable impact.Yorkshire’s Australian coach Jason Gillespie was delighted to secure the signatures of two world-class players. “We’re absolutely thrilled to bits to be able to secure the services of two very exciting players in world cricket,” he said.”I spoke to Glenn a little while ago and just enquired as to whether he would be interested in representing Yorkshire and outlined how we saw how well he could fit into the dressing room and the role we wanted him to play. He jumped at the opportunity, I think that says a lot about our club, that players really want to come and play for us.Aaron Finch says T20 will join the Championship as a Yorkshire priority•Getty Images

“Glenn has a fantastic all round game. He’s a clean striker of the ball, a wonderful fielder and he bowls some really good off spin but what I’m excited about is what he can bring to specifically our T20 game: a bit of entertainment and a bit of excitement.”He’ll perform well for Yorkshire, no question and he’ll bring something we need, that middle to late innings hitting and a good fielder as well as bowl some handy overs for us and really put a show on for the crowd. We’ve got later starts with the lights at Headingley so it’s very exciting this year.”Aaron is a great leader, he has a lot of leadership and captaincy experience and having a player like that in the dressing room gives the younger players the opportunity to learn off him. He’s very open with how he likes to go about things and how he tries to adapt to situations in the middle.”Maxwell is no stranger to the English domestic scene. He represented Hampshire in 2012 and 2014 respectively, during their run of five finals in successive seasons, as well as having a stint at Surrey in 2013.”I had two great spells with Hampshire and loved every minute,” he said. “But Yorkshire are one of biggest clubs in the world and to get the chance to play for them is an honour. It gives me a new challenge that I will relish.”Finch emphasised Yorkshire’s commitment to T20 cricket next season. “To have made a contribution to their success of winning the title was really good,” he said. “I relished the challenge of playing the County Championship against the moving red ball: it has certainly enhanced my game.”This year the club will be aiming to win the title again, but there is also a major emphasis on doing well in the T20 competition. There were signs last year that when we get it right we are a difficult side to beat. With more application and an improvement in how we approach the game, we can make a concerted effort in challenging for honours.”Having Maxi playing alongside me will be terrific. He is a true competitor and loves the shorter form of the game.”Yorkshire, unlike some counties, are priocing their tickets compertitively in an effort to fill Headingley with seven home tickets available for £70. Their commitment to T20 gives a clue to the thinking of their chairman Colin Graves, the incoming chairman of the ECB, when he sits down with the chief executive Tom Harrison to plot the future direction of the English county game.”

White hundred gets Victoria home

ScorecardCameron White made his eighth List A hundred•Getty Images

Cameron White’s unbeaten 102 set up Victoria’s first win in the Matador BBQs One-Day Cup in Brisbane, helping the side chase down 300 against South Australia.Coming in to bat in the 12th over with the score at 2 for 65, White anchored the chase at just over run-a-ball, stitching important partnerships with opener Rob Quiney and David Hussey, who contributed fifties. White’s partnership of 90 runs for the fourth wicket with Hussey, which came at a brisk clip of almost seven an over, set the base for Victoria’s reply and they went into the last 10 overs needing 66.The wickets of Marcus Stoinis and Peter Handscomb did not affect Victoria too much in the final overs as John Hastings and White kept pace with the equation. Hastings took 18 in an over off Chadd Sayers, before White ended the game in the 49th over, bringing up the win and his eighth List A hundred with a brace of fours.Earlier, fifties from Travis Head, Alex Ross and Johan Botha, and a 35-ball 49 from Tim Ludeman lifted South Australia to 8 for 299. Head, Ross and Botha shared a string of 50+ plus partnerships in the middle overs, before Ludeman provided a lift towards the end, smacking 17 runs in the last over. Hastings was the most successful bowler for Victoria, taking 3 for 37 in his 10 overs.

Keeping Test specialists out of IPL a good idea – Fleming

Stephen Fleming, the former New Zealand captain, has said it might help India’s Test-match prospects to create specialist long-format players by keeping them away from the IPL

Fleming said players such as M Vijay could enhance their Test game by staying away from the IPL•Getty Images

Stephen Fleming, the former New Zealand captain, has said that keeping specialist Test players away from the IPL might help India’s long-format prospects.”The IPL is two months of the year and the only challenge is that it is probably eating into the spare time of the players around the world, especially Indian players,” Fleming said, during a promotional event in Mumbai. “The thought about creating specialist Test players is an excellent one. A lot of countries are doing it, earmarking some players for one form, and that is something India might need to consider.”To do this, however, Fleming said the players would need to be compensated for the monetary losses they could incur by not taking part in the IPL.”And keeping in mind though that the IPL is such a good competition to play, and to keep a player out of it there might have to be remuneration of another form because all players want to gravitate towards it and play it so there will have to be a pretty strong directive to keep them away,” Fleming said. “Then again becoming the Test player could be enough but it is something they need to consider. [Cheteshwar] Pujara is that type of player, even [Murali] Vijay, they are very talented players in the short form but keeping them out of it would enhance their Test game probably.”Fleming, who is head coach of Chennai Super Kings, has worked closely with MS Dhoni, but said it was hard for him to judge Dhoni as a Test captain, particularly since he didn’t watch the Test series ball-by-ball. But considering India’s results in the series, he felt the questions being asked of Dhoni’s future as captain were warranted.”It is hard because I only deal with him in T20 matches and you don’t have any time to drift there,” Fleming said. “It is very hard for me to comment before the series falls for us in the middle of the night so you don’t get to see the ball by ball for the series and without doing that I find it hard to comment on his captaincy.”He was very good at Lord’s especially with the short ball but after that they didn’t get enough runs so there was run pressure. As far as his captaincy goes, I didn’t see enough to give you a comment. What I will say again is within the results he has got to be under pressure naturally as the leader of side. The dramatic turn of form, speaking from advice, does warrant those questions. His form with the bat was good I understand but certainly the captain always gets looked at when the series goes wrong.”

A bola pegou no adversário e encobriu Tiepo.
